Misc. News: RAPE Page Taken Down news by swampgas
06:34:  Judge was nice enough to send me an email he received from our old friends over at Nintendo of America:

We have learned that your web site, the "Rape - Rather a Pokemon Emulator" web site, located at www.moonlitcoalition.com/rape, is offering software which emulates Nintendo's proprietary hardware systems (commonly referred to as "emulators").
    ...
This letter constitutes a demand that you immediately cease offering, reproducing and distributing the emulator(s) which contributes to violation of Nintendo's intellectual property rights.

At the time of this posting, the RAPE site gives an "access forbidden" error, however the author claims that in spite of the cease and desist order, he wants to "add color gameboy support".

Emulator Release: Laser 0.2 news by lopantu

  • DAC sound plays at the right pitch now (e.g. 'Sega' chord, 'Eswat' speech)

The games being referred to are Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy X, and Final Fantasy XI. Yes, you read that correctly. They have announced not only that these games are in development, but that at least Final Fantasy IX and X will be out before the end of next Summer in Japan. It's possible, although unlikely, that the world might have THREE more Final Fantasy games before another new Star Wars movie comes out.

01:12:  It has been awhile since the last update, at least as far as the development of this emulator goes. Perhaps the recent announcements made by Be had a little to do with it, as that very same fiasco seems to have shaken quite a few developers. This update was still brief. From the notes:

"The Joystick support is now working!"

Misc. News: Discontinued emulators technical questions news by lycia
15:24:  As I'm sure you know by now, Raine is no longer being worked on and therefore the authors can't provide technical support for their emulators. However, this brings up another important point.

If the emulator is no longer being worked on or the project is abandoned, then writing the authors or affiliates of the emulator asking how to fix this in *insert emulator here* won't do you any good. Usually when a project goes unfinished or is discontinued, the authors and affiliates want nothing more to do with their emulators. So, asking ][ellbent of BloodLust Software about how to make NESticle or Genecyst work won't do you any good since he didn't code the emulators. So, do some research on the emulator you're using and find out if it is still an on-going project or if the creators have ditched the entire thing. It would help them out a lot if they didn't get 8273563 emails a day.

    Thanks.

Utility Release: BGMapper 1.72 news by nitro
20:58:  A new version of a great background mapper has been released. Here is a list of what's new:

  • Autosequencing for all exports, whether scene, graphics, or palette. Files are numbered 0-999 (bgimg###.bmp, bgvrm###.bmp, bgimg###.pal)
  • Hex/dec offset in graphics viewer. Toggle by pressing 'h'.
  • Games store several types of graphics in VRAM at the same time (up to five different entities, 2bpl, 4bpl, 8bpl, mode 7, and tilemap words), so why be limited to a view of only a single tile format and palette group at a time? For Wilma, I finished VRAM auto-formatting that scans through the entire scene searching for where each tile of VRAM is used, what format it is, and what palette it is using. I still want to add manual palette coloring with the mouse, but it's a start. Press "8" to format, "9" to palette, "*" to unformat, and "(" to unpalette.
  • The graphics viewer now lets you select different tile formats (2bpl, 4bpl, 8bpl, mode 7) instead of just sprites. Use the keys 1-4 to change modes, up/down/left/right to scroll, + - to change the palette, and then 0 to export to a bitmap (bgvrm000.bmp).
  • Added palette inversion for those rare scenes that use subtractive transparency like Torchlight Trouble in DKC. Press "8" in the scene viewer.
  • Exports raw palettes, directly from CGRAM (256 rgb words), after me wanting a find a palette in a certain game.
  • Info screen (which no one probably uses anyway) no longer annoyingly switches to text mode inside the program. This was originally done so that the info could be viewed directly from the command line.

You can download it at the SNES utilities page.

Utility Release: Tile View .171 news by nitro
20:56:  A new version of a great ZSNES save state utility has been released. Tile View lets you view the tiles in the save states (*.zs*) of any SNES game. Here is what's new:

  • Increased length of help screen. Now use up/down arrow keys to scroll.
  • Goto bg added. To go bg2 in a savestate for example, press 'g' and then type "bg2".
  • Added alternate sideways orientation (down/right instead of right/down) for DKC levels and Zelda dungeon fragments. Press 'o' to toggle.
  • Added tile table mode. Accepts variable size tile tables, such as 2x2 Zelda and 4x4 DKC. Unfortunately tile tables can be difficult to find and don't always work correctly (Mario World is the prime example), so maybe someday user editable tile tables will be added. Use '-t' switch to load a tile table from a ROM.
  • Darkened colors even more for better contrast in VRAM mode.
  • Added VRAM graphics mode. Use '-v' switch to load graphics from ZSNES savestates.

You can download it at the SNES utilities page.

Currently, only LOAD " STOP " and SAVE " STOP " are accessible (both abort the emulator immediately, provided STOP is typed as Shift-A). Ot her QZ-commands are bound to be available in the next release.
  • ZX81LOAD patch handler: files with long filenames can be loaded from within the emulator by typing the DOS-equivalent name with an "=" (equal sign) replacing the "~" (tilde). For example, type: LOAD "LONGFI=1" to load the file 'LONGFI~1.P'.

You can download it from the Sinclair computer emulators page.

Site News: Speccyal 0.70 news by bnu
05:47:  Speccyal, a Sinclair Spectrum emulator for Windows, has been updated to version 0.70 and here's what's new:

  • Added an option to switch between scanlines mode and no scanlines emulation mode.
  • Removed F7 (fps off) and F2 (Sound OFF) and made an option out of the two (this means these options act now like a switch, this is a little bit clever and I have now saved some funtions keys for future options).
  • Added an option in file menu to load an debug a snapshot.
  • A snapshot filename can be passed as an argument to the program! This can be of use if you want to associate .z80 and .sna file types to my emulator and automatically launch games. This works but requires the 48.rom file to be copied in the snapshots directory.
  • Four bytes opcodes are now correctly displayed in the debugger (more exactly, the fourth byte is displayed)
  • Begun to implement the "run" option in the debugger window. This is disabled fow now because it's not really working yet but at least there's an attempt!
  • All options are now saved in the inifile (I mean *ALL*, not like before just joystick and path to snaps dir :))
  • Added support for .SCR files (loading and saving)

You can download it from the Sinclair computer emulators page.

Site News: Q-emuLator 2.0.1 news by bnu
05:41:  Q-emuLator, a shareware Sinclair QL emulator for Windows, has been updated to version 2.0.1, and here's what's new:

  • 640x480 full screen mode. Very fast graphics. The QL display occupies most of the screen. To enter this full screen mode, press F12 when emulation is running. Then press F12 again to return to windowed mode.
  • 1024x768 full screen mode. No compromise graphics. The QL display takes the whole screen. Slowest mode, due to the large amount of video memory used. It's the only mode that emulates flashing in the QL 8 colors mode. To enter this full screen mode, pr ess Shift+F12 when emulation is running. Then press F12 to return to windowed mode.
  • Faster accelerated text output and block graphics.
  • It is possible to specify a key to be automatically pressed at the initial QL F1/F2 prompt.

You can download the demo version from the Sinclair computer emulators page.

Misc. News: Yet another AIM security issue news by stickfig
17:07:  Now, it seems that every time something such as a security hole in AIM or anything else quite that popular comes up, it causes a huge uproar. Guess what? It's time for another huge uproar.

The lastest hole allows people signing up for AOL 5.0 to steal AIM screen names via a hole in the AOL signup process. Using this, anyone with an AIM account can be locked out of it, and thus their screen name is stolen.

You can read all about it at C|Net.

Thanks to Mike (who told me the news via AIM) for the news.

Emulator Release: A Lost Mac Plus Emu news by infe
21:33:  This emulator wasn't just released, however not many people know about it or have tried it. It is called WORM, and it emulates the Mac Plus, just like vMac, only it does a better job. From the E-Mac ulation site:

It was created by the author of Gemulator to "show the vMac team that their emulator is very slow." Downside? No sound, never updated (now that the point is proven) and a command line interface (DOS window). If you are a vMac user I would defineatly re command this emulator... at least to try out. It Uses the same ROM and hardfile as vMac.

It has been added to our Mac page. Thanks to Joe Bucci for the info, and E-Maculation for details on the emulator.

Emulator Release: Snes9x 1.29 for Windows news by xip
20:50:  Yet another new version of Snes9x for Windows has been released, and here's what's new:

  • Disabled the SPC700 noise feature simulation used by Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy 3 until I work out why its being triggered by sound effects that don't use it.
  • Rewrote/reorganised the DirectX and 3D/fx handling code, now both are never enabled at the same time in Snes9X. It might fix the crashing problems some Window port users are seeing. Changing between DirectX and Voodoo 3D/fx modes now requires Snes9X to be restarted.
  • Tracked down and fixed the Chrono Trigger black screen problem on the Windows port: a rogue asm instruction was left in by mistake after some code edits - it was only by chance that the code worked on the Linux port.
  • Added some SNES debug options to the Windows port, but disabled by default, on the shipped version.
  • Clicking on the column headings in the OpenROM dialog in the Windows port now sorts by that column; plus added some slight screen update optimisations.
  • Added an optimisation to graphics rendering: don't add or subtract sub-screen from background layers, or clear the sub-screen, if SNES fixed colour is black and no background layers are enabled on sub-screen, even if ROM tries to enable translucency effects for every background layer. Discovered Sonic was doing this, there will be others.
  • Forgot to enable auto S-RAM save on Windows port, oops!

Get it at the SNES page.

17:22:  As I'm sure most of you have heard and read on several WWW boards and on several websites, the multi-arcade emulator Raine, is more than likely going to be discontinued. 19:46:  The site that had the illegal CD's have taken off all the pages containing the order forms for the CD's they were selling. Here is a snip of the e-mail InVerse received:

We do not sell illegal Roms; we placed the advert on there when we were offered some supposedly legal CDs. As we have heard these are not legal and have thus removed all the pages. None were sold and we are writing to the supplier to complain ourselves.

So you can stop flaming them now. :)

Thanks go out to InVerse for the message.

Emulator Release: BeGameboy 0.62 Released! news by harper
15:00:  Let's cut to the chase, so to speak. Directly from the Release Notes:

"This version implements a basic 4 buttons joystick handler. I did not test it myself, because i don't own one. Tell me if it works. I have also implemented full multithreading. Now, the cpu thread will not eat all your cpu's time. The option "realtime" features realtime gameboy emulation. However, if you find it too slow, just uncheck the realtime option."

Also new, is the BeGameboy Homepage. You may also find BeGameboy on our own BeOS Console page. Wonderful work.

Misc. News: BeOS R5. Soon, and Free. news by harper
14:46:  This is actually a day late, but there was a little breakdown in communication.

BeOS, the operating system I try and maintain here on ZD, has had some rather interesting things happen to it. Namely, the next version shall be R5, and not R4.6 or R4.8. But even larger than that, is the fact that a somewhat basic version of the operating system shall be free. To download. For all.

The download is rather significant in a few aspects. For one, it is expected to be from 40-60 megs in size, although it isn't quite finalized yet. The more significant part of this, is that it can be sort of installed into Windows, as an application. Once there, you would launch it as any normal program. What happens next is that it takes a very large-probably settable- portion of the FAT, and uses it as a BFS-Be File System-. It doesn't run inside of Windows, so all of it's innate funcionality, speed and beauty are still there, but you would no longer need to repartition your drive to run it. It can be installed and uninstalled as easily as an application, and run as such. It is also able to run as a standalone, sitting on it's own partition or drive, just as it always has. The downloadable version is fully functional, and not limited in any way. There shall be commercial licenses available for purchase, as well as an extended copy of R5 which shall include a host of extra applications and such.

We aren't exactly certain what is going to go INTO this release though. For those of you who have followed it a little, the next release had been codenamed Maui, and was to be a 4.x release. Dano, which would be R5, would follow after some time. Dano was to have quite a large number of new/changed things in it, most notable of these: a complete networking rewrite which put networking directly into the kernel. Also included as possibilities was a more refined OpenGL, and better support for hardware. We should know in the next few months what shall be in it, though.

R5 has been nearly promised to be released before March 31st, 2000. You may find more information on free.be.com. You may also visit what is probably the greatest and most current BeOS related news site, BeNews. For the latest news and discussion of this.

I had known about this since it's release early yesterday, but I would like to thank the rather large host of people who mailed both Zophar and myself on this matter. You finalized the decision for me to post it here.

Keep your eyes on this, everyone. It could be big. It could also fail miserably, due to their apperant 'refocus' on the Internet Applicance market. We shall see. I, and the BeOS loving community can only hope for the best. Cheers.

  • Marp cleaned up the emulation code (YM2151, YM2612, and SN76496) and removed everything that MSP didn't need.

Emulator News: Request from Dave of DGen news by zophar
03:31:  Everyone who's into Sega Genesis emulation (like me ;]) knows of DGen, a Sega Genesis emulator for DOS & Windows. Dave, the author of this fine emulator, has posted a request on his website for help. Anyone who owns a Sega Gene sis and a backup unit, be sure to read the following:

Little request - if anyone out there has a copier and a real Genesis, could they run this experiment ROM and give me the results: exp2.zip Tell me what you see onscreen. You should see two columns of numbers. The right column is a counter that should b e increasing (check it is increasing). The left column is the value I am testing for. If it flickers between values, just give me a range. Thanks very much - e-mail results to the usual address: dave@dtmnt.com. If it do esn't run let me know that as well. Oh and also let me know what make/model Megadrive/Genesis/Nomad you tried it on - the more different models we get the better.

For the file, be sure to go to the official DGen website and give it a go! Thanks to Dave himself for the word.

Misc. News: That Shipping Better Be Quicker Than Overnight... news by infe
00:16:  A hearty thumbs down to most online shopping sites.

This wouldn't normally be on the news page, but I felt it had to be said. Online sites are getting absolutely ridiculous about giving you a great "deal"...until that is, you check out and see their outrageous shipping prices (if they even let you see the shipping price at all before you check out). On behalf of all gamers and shoppers everywhere:

Online shopping sites, you're going to have to get your butts in gear and lose the fake charges. Show us the REAL price of the product and we'll be thankful, and more likely to pay even the same price.

Two sites notorious for doing this? Funco and Comp-U-Plus. Just two of many, the latter charging $20.00 to ship you most things.

Please voice your opinions not only on our messageboard, but also to sites that continue to do this. Together we can buy games or anything with less headache.

Emulator Release: POSE 3.0a3 news by lopantu
12:02:  POSE is a PalmOS emulator for the Macintosh. 3Com has taken over development of this emulator, and version 3.0a3 is now available. Here's what's new since the last version:

  • Added Q&D PC checking. On JSR, BSR, RTS, and RTE, I check what we're attempting to set the PC to. Originally, I had a pretty beefy check that made sure the PC was in things like allocated, locked chunks. However, that's expensive for now, so I backed off to checking that the PC was (a) even, (b) in RAM or ROM, and (c) not in low-memory.
  • The new UAE 0.8.10 code includes a new way to emulate ROR and ROL instructions. Unfortunately, this new way runs afoul of a code generation bug in CWCPPC 2.3.1 (from CW 5.2) on the Mac. Reverted to the old way of emulating those instructions until Met rowerks comes out with a compiler patch. [Catherine White]
  • (Mac) Changed the way Poser determines whether or not to translate extended ASCII characters (those >= 0x80) into standard ASCII equivalents. The new method should be more consistant and robust, based on whether or not the user is running a Japanese P alm OS and a Mac OS with the Japanese Language Kit installed.
  • The device could actually go to sleep while running Gremlins! Sometimes, Gremlins will input a long series of key events. However, key events don't reset the auto-off counter. Normally, the Palm doesn't care, since key events are a side-effect of pen events, which *do* reset the auto-off counter. But Poser doesn't enter key events that way -- it inserts them directly with EvtEnqueueKey. Now Poser calls EvtResetAutoOffTimer when it enters key events.
  • Fixed problem with Gremlins and Palm OS 3.5 systems. Gremlins calls WinGetWindowBounds to get the bounds of a window in which to generate pen taps. WinGetWindowBounds returns the bounds of the window returned by WinGetDrawWindow. On older systems, if the draw window were NULL, WinGetDrawWindow would return the display window. On 3.5, this has been changed in debug ROMs; WinGetDrawWindow can return NULL so as to force applications to make sure there is an established draw window. Gremlins ran afoul of that change, and so now calls WinSetDrawWindow(WinGetActiveWindow()) before calling WinGetWindowBounds(). [Roger Flores, Steve Lemke]
  • In the event posting/receiving logging code, support the new Palm OS 3.5 events.
  • In HostFPrintF, support + and space as flags, and * as a minimum width field character. [Patrick Porlan]
  • Added Symbol 1700/1740 skin as an option for Palm III's. This is *not* to say that Poser emulates symbol devices. It only means that you can make a Palm III look like a Symbol device. [Ron Kupke]
  • Reformatted Gremlin Hordes log file to make it a little easier to find the error messages. [Flash Sheridan, Catherine White]
  • Make a stronger effort to get the pen calibrated perfectly. The original attempt (cf, 2.1d11) would occassionally only get us very close, which could lead to inconsistant Gremlin runs.
  • Fixed a bug in the UAE 0.8.10 code where a corrupt status register could get pushed onto the stack during an exception/interrupt and the previous instruction that had affected the CPU's Z flag was a BCHG instruction that flipped the highmost bit from off to on (gee, how could we have missed *that*). [Catherine White, Stuart Malone]

Get it at the PalmOS emulators for Macintosh section.

Misc. News: Animation: "Franco the Cleaner" news by zophar
    23:33:  Yo!

A friend of mine has been working on a short animated clip for the last month titled "Franco the Cleaner". Over the last few days, I've been working closely with him to add in sound effects, voices & music. The result is a really fun-to-watch black & whit e animation. However, I warn you that it is not intended for children. It contains scenes of explicit violence. David Popolow is the creator & animator of this short clip. Remember, if you're under 18, get your parents permission. Finally, you'll need Rea l Player G2 to view this clip. If you don't have it, you can obtain a free copy at www.real.com.

If you'd like to get in contact with Dave Popolow with regards to his animation, you can reach him at marchtic@aol.com.

    Enjoy!

Site News: NSM contest #5: Solstice news by zophar
21:07:  The next NSM contest is Solstice! AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHhahahahahahahahahah... yeah. I decided that for this contest, we would make it as difficult as possible, since the prize will be a $75 check from myself. The object of this NESticle NSM contest is to b eat the NES game Solstice from start to finish losing as few lives as possible. In the event of a tie, the one who lost as few lives as possible and beat Solstice in the shortest amount of time will win the prize.

Their name will go down in ZD history and their submission will be added to the ZD NESticle NSM archive at the bottom. Entries are due no later than January 25, 2000: there will be no exceptions to this rule. Be sure to read th e official Solstice NSM contest rules, and may the best man (or woman, or alien) win!

Links Update: 19 sites added news by nitro
17:48:  I have updated the links section again, and this time I have added 19 links. One thing to all web site maintainers, If you submit a site, please take the responsibility to keep me posted on the site, weather the site goes down, the link changes, or if the contents of the page change so much that it REQUIRES a change from the comment on the links page. Not if you added one new section, or if you added 2 more ROMs. ONLY if you have done something spectacular, and it needs to be updated. It takes a long time to do links, and I don't want to be having to do 100 every month because people think it is necessary for me to update their comment because their site changed slightly.

Go and check out the newly updated Links page.

Misc. News: Lunar: Silver Star Story announced for PC! news by zophar
01:47:  Over at pc.ign.com, there's a post announcing that Working Designs is porting the best role playing game to ever hit the universe (in my opinion, at least! =]), Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete, to the PC. Although the IGN article is rather biased (replace the words "not generic 3D mush" for "fairly old in terms of look and feel"), it's great to hear that my favorite role playing series of all time is coming to the PC!

Site News: BeGameboy 0.42! news by harper
01:47:  After a little haitus, BeGameboy has been updated. Twice! This section manager missed the first update to 0.40, due to a bit of work elsewhere. Not to worry, 0.42 came in similar fashion to a zsnes update. The 0.40 update is as follows:

"More acurate emulation. Color/Keyboard/Cheats configuration file."

With the 0.42 update in pursuit:

"Window bug correction... This is the most accurate version of BeGameboy. It is also a bit slower. But the performance will improve a lot in the next week." He promises.

You may find BeGameboy and the rest of the BeOS console emulators on our BeOS Console page.

Interview News: Who Is TuxedoMask? news by infe
00:46:  Well, if you are curious, now you can find out in this interview! He's been in rom release groups like GiTM and Vertigo2099, and is currently a part of the NES World Jukebox and Vintage Gaming. Though the interview is interesting, to be frank the page could have been editted better, with numerous spelling and gramatical errors. Nonetheless, still an interesting read.

Emulator News: HASH Discontinued news by infe
00:22:  Thanks again to Y2Jared for some more GameBoy news. It seems that this time though, no news would have been good news. Due to a hard drive crash, the Windows Gameboy emulator HASH will no longer be developed. He lost most of the source code, and assumedly doesn't want to redo all that work. This is too bad, especially since HASH was one of the few Windows GameBoy emulators to support the frickin joystick.

On the positive side, _dox_ is releasing an older version of the source code that he does have to the public. Perhaps someone will do something with it. He also posts, "The HasH project is not dead completely as I will be making in the future a combined gameboy emulator/disassembler. the first beta of this can be found on ConsoleDev.com."

Emulator Release: New Version of GBEmu news by infe
00:09:  This has actually been out for quite a while (since December 27th), d'oh! Better late than never. This is a neat little GameBoy emulator for Win9x (I've ran it under Windows 2000 as well, and it ran great). It does color GameBoy, has sound, and is overall a pretty good emulator. Also, it now defaults to english, not japanese. Definetely worth the download. Note: It only appears to display a game if you're running in 16-bit color.

Thanks to Y2Jared for the news.

Emulator News: Atari ST Emulator in Java news by infe
23:50:  There is apparently an Atari ST emulator being developed to run in your browser via Java. It has no name (yet), and is written by David Dawkins. The demos seem to work well, though the download is lengthy at 880kb to play Tetris. In any case, the screenshots show that this emulator has promise.

Thanks to Norbert Kehrer for the news.

Misc. News: PSEmu Pro and Impact news by infe
23:26:  You may have heard this already, but graphics plugins for Impact and PSEmu Pro are compatible. Zyrxil writes, "PSEmu Pro graphics plugins work with Impact! Both Pete's OpenGL Plugin and Lewpy's Glide Plugin. Both worked as well or better than the regular Impact renderers. All you have to do to get them to work is to rename the .dll file to 'renderer.ipc' and start Impact."

So those of you who wish to try this, have a field day! I leave you to draw your own conclusions on whether this means anything about who the author(s) of Impact may be.

Misc. News: CherryRoms returns news by nitro
18:36:  Here is what was posted on CherryRoms:

Well it's time for a much needed update.

Yes that's right were back (well partially) The only section that's not up in this update is prolly the only section people come here to see.

Due to much pressure from various partys (thanks to all those who email'd me, those were many). And the fact that I couldn't bare to see my creation in such a sorry state of affairs (though it has been for such a long time).

    We are back..

Sorry to quash the unfounded rumours but NO we have not been shut down by Nintendo nor have the roms collections gone down the drain, Cherryroms was actually killed by what can only be described as RLT (real life troubles) with the load at work getting too emence and side web projects taking up a lot of time. It has taken a lot of time to redo cherryroms and it seems the time has finally arrived to get it back on track.

The ROMS sections should be up as soon as we can get this DataBase sorted (it's almost finished)..

To make up for that theres a pretty spiffing ROTF containing some of my favourite games of all time.

So have a browse through some of the new pages, I hope you like the new virginal look :).

    ...Recoil

This was always a great site for downloading ROMs. Check it out!

19:15:  Videogames.com has done a review of the game Chrono Cross. Chrono Cross is the PSX RPG sequel to the classic game Chrono Trigger. Here's a bit of what they had to say:

The story begins with the hero, Serge, thrust into a parallel world where he had died under mysterious circumstances more than a decade earlier. He teams up with a rowdy adventurer, Kid, and sets out in search of the mysterious Frozen Flame, an artifact that lets the holder reshape time and space at will. The enigmatic Yamaneko, a regal man-cat who hunts the Frozen Flame for his own purposes, opposes them. In his quest to return home, Serge will collect both allies and foes and will find himself thrust into an adventure that will reveal his heritage, purpose, and ultimate destiny. Only by crossing between the two dimensions can Serge find the answers to his questions.

Site News: Search Engine Test news by swampgas
01:35:  Being the server guy here at ZD, I've had a few emails suggesting we expand our search capabilities to make it easier to find stuff. After over 15 hours of work (and a special thanks to Brian over at EmuWorld), your suggestion has become a reality. Our new search engine now has an unlimited number of results, and it displays them 10 at a time. The best new feature is the category system, in which you can search just ZD, or all the sites on our links page. If you're on our links page and you noticed our servers hammering yours for a few mins, that was to index your site...don't panic.

I set a test page up so you can try out the new search engine and send me your comments/suggestions on it before I put it up as the main ZD search engine. As of right now, we have an old index of ZD in the database, and only the general emulation sites indexed from the links page.

Misc. News: New website idea news by zophar
12:46:  Ever since I posted about ZD's hosting offer to everyone, we've received a great many e-mails from people with site ideas, but no site. This, of course, posed a problem. One such e-mail seemed so interesting, however, that I've decided to honor the e-mail's author's wishes and post it up here.

I'm sure many of you have found great satisfaction going through the SPC and NSF archives here on Zophar's Domain and listening to all those classic video game tunes. But how about full blown remixes and covers of classic video game songs? How would Pac-Man's theme sound as a hardcore techno dance mix? What about a Heavy Metal Mario 64 Theme? Or even a dead-on rendition of the Final Fantasy 3 Battle tune? Well as far as we know, such things don't exist. Or do they...

If you have covered or remixed video game tunes and would like them hosted on Zophar's Domain then e-mail me! I have a dream of a huge archive of re-tooled video game music, in every musical style, and for every game, but in order to make it a reality I need support and submissions from you, the community! E-mail me your tunes in MP3 or MOD form and if I get enough we'll have the coolest music archive on the net! Note: any submissions need to be your own work.

As Zophar says, nothing on ZD would be here without the support of the community, and it's this community I rely on to bring this idea to fruitition. For an example of a classic game tune I have recreated take a listen to http://members.home.com/ruiner1/druid_2.mp3

Thanks for reading this and I hope to hear your music soon,

From a webmaster's perspective, this sounds like an excellent idea. The question is, will people support it? If you want to see this website, and/or if you can contribute anything, please send off an e-mail to ruiner and we'll see what develops.

Media News: Emulation mentioned in EGM news by zophar
12:40:  I received an e-mail from one of ZD's visitors about an issue of EGM which mentioned bleem! and the X-box. Following is a sample from the article.

As each new piece of technology comes along, it's more than capable of pretending to be something from the past that was less powerful. While currently frowned upon, companies like Bleem! are blazing a trail that could well lead to the future of gaming and the set-top-box holy grail that everyone still seems to aspire to. Coupled with broad bandwidth connections and "gaming on demand", emulation could be the way that people access the games of yesterday.

They also mentioned the X-Box, and its possibilities.

An interesting aside to this point(franchise characters) emerges when you consider emulation though. The X-box will be more than capable of emulating many of the older systems. Although a way off yet, with the advent of broad-bandwidth internet and the gaming-on-demand services, X-box could be in a good position to bring you legitimate old-school games through emulation.

It seems that as time passes, gaming magazines are taking emulation more and more seriously. Thanks to The Wandering Spider for these tidbits.

Site News: S&M Software hosted at ZD and GYM news news by zophar
10:33:  In case you missed the post yesterday, S & M Software (coders of YMAMP, a GYM plugin for Winamp and MSP, a multi sound player for DOS) is now hosted here at Zophar's Domain. Be sure to visit smsoft.zophar.net for the latest YMAMP and MSP updates.

In case you weren't reading the what's new for YMAMP 2.0, it now has support for headers (in the style of NSFs and SPCs), so you can now enter information such as the title of the game, the place the music comes from, and more. Also in this release is support for complete GYMs with PCM support! That means that when logging GYMs through Megasis with PCM turned on, you'll get the full sound - drum beats and all! Additionally, zlib compression was added so that those large 2 MB GYMs (PCM data takes up a lot of space) can be compressed by over 200%.

We'll be adding a GYM archive to ZD in the next few days. Until then, everyone interested in submitting GYMs should start logging them via Megasis (make sure PCM is turned on) and adding the headers through YMAMP. GYMs compress very well through RAR (without compressing the GYMs with zlib first). You can hold them until the archive is up, and then we'll rock and roll!

Emulator Release: Calypso Beta 011 news by zophar
15:13:  A new beta of Calypso (a Sega Master System & GameGear emulator) has been released. Here's what's new in Beta 011:

  • First of all, and as people suggestion, the emulator includes support to read ZIP archives, all was extracted from ZLIB library.
  • In order to save some space, the debugger now uses Raze's engine, that's why Marat's one is not included in the .EXE. However, I am still using Marat's disassembler.
  • Mamelang tool included. With this tool you will be able to translate the emulator to any language without programming knowledge (thanks to Vicente Aguilar).
  • -res parameter added. It was a suggestion.
  • Richard Mitton's engine added but I am afraid it doesn't emulate the sound correctly in newer soundcards because it is based in Adlib. It has the same problems as my old Adlib engine, but this is better because it emulates the noise.
  • Some changes of the GUI. Priority of the windows bug was fixed. Some changes in the colour of the interface.
  • -snd option. Thanks to Richard Mitton.
  • -scanlines parameter added. At the moment only in the version without GUI.
  • Osciloscope. (Must be improved).
  • Added a MegaDrive-Genesis debugger. You can enter with -d, the same as the other. All the keys are compatible. At this moment is not perfect.

You can download Calypso Beta 011 from the Master System & GameGear emulators page.

Site News: Welcome to the year 2000... and we're all still here! news by zophar
    10:00:  Yo!

It's January 2nd, 2000. The world has not ended and the Earth's computers continue to tick away. Did anyone really believe the hype (not counting the Y2K survivalists on the Montel Williams show, people from the year 1001 who traveled to the present, and Leonard Nimoy)? ZD would like to wish everyone the best new year (not millenium, thats 364 days away!) in the world!

I'd like to wish a very happy birthday to Mathew Valente (also known as TSSF). We hope you continue to have many more!

The ZD logo contest has ended. No furthur submissions will be accepted. I have a lot of graphics viewing to do now, but you can rest assured that the absolute best, most original logo will be the one to win the contest. To everyone who submitted a logo for the contest, we'd like to thank you and invite you to enter future ZD contests.

Speaking of contests, it's Y2K but we haven't decided if we're going to make the next NES movie contest an NSM or a NESten movie (NESten will be released very shortly, so keep your eyes peeled for the release). The game for the next movie contest has already been chosen, so it's just a matter of waiting for NESten's release before deciding. The last four NSM contests that we've done have been a huge success and we expect the fifth movie contest to be no different. I'd like to remind everyone that the fifth contest will be the most difficult of any of them, so get practicing! The game begins with an "S". :)

The volume of e-mails I've been receiving in the last few weeks has been phenominal! I'd like to apologize to everyone that I haven't been able to respond to yet. I have some e-mails from over a week ago, and I'm getting to every one as soon as I can. As part of the ZD pledge, I promise each and every one of you that every mail you send to me is read.

Today's the day for the ZD Y2K questionaire! Some of you may remember we did such a thing last year. Shortly after reading the thousands of responses that we received, we began our climb up the rope of emulation sites, as we added all of the section and files that our visitors indicated to us they wanted. This time will be no different so when we post the questionaire, we'd like to ask everyone to fill it out. Remember, ZD is here for you.

Thanks for visiting ZD, and we hope your new year is free from computer glitches and asteroids! ;)

Misc. News: NO$GMB Y2K Glitch? news by lycia
00:16:  I've been getting quite a few e-mails regarding NO$GMB's "Y2K" glitch. It seems that when you run a non-registered version, such as the one found on the Gameboy Emulators page, it comes up with several errors and and humourous phrases. It's just a joke, not a real glitch. After you close the program and re-open it, it's perfectly fine. Don't worry about it.

    Here's a screenshot:

    Thanks to everyone that e-mailed.

Emulator Release: GalEmu 0.40.8 news by xip
21:10:  A new version of GalEmu has been released, and here's what's new:

  • Changed the version numbering. I am basically sick of betas... And if I went to a tenth beta, then I don't think the title would fit on screen.
  • Hopefully everything goes well and this is released early morning on Jan 1...
  • Fixed the loading of Uniwar S and Space Battle ROMs - it was still looking in the japirem folder
  • Added Swarm (yet another in a long line of Galaxian clones)
  • Updated Z80 core to MZ80 v3.1 - v3.0 was terribly buggy with many of the games - just a warning. This gives a small speed boost, plus fixes enemy patterns in some games (second stage in Pisces is the most noticable).

You can get it at the multi arcade emulator page.

You can download it from the PC98 emulators page. And if you can't find any games or BIOS ROMs for it, you might want to check out The X68k games pile, as it has a nice collection of PC98 games and links to sites which have the BIOS ROMs. Thanks to Crokk for the news!

15:06:  I'd just like to say that, while Y2K was overhyped, I'm happy that nothing has happened. That's right, folks -- no Great Midget Rebellion right now (although I'm sure one is being planned; I allow you to be my first victim when you rebel, midgets).

Anyway, expect a poll update either today or tomorrow. If you have any suggestions for the poll, you can always go to the Contact page and send us your idea. I'll definitely consider it, especially if it's truly interesting.

Finally, just to make this an actual update, let me link to a decent ZDNet article about Y2K's non-effect thus far.

Emulator Release: DarcNES v20000101! news by bnu
13:04:  DarcNES, a TG16/PCE, SMS/GG, NES, Apple II, Genesis and Colecovision emulator for X-Windows, has been updated to version 20000101, and since I missed version 19991226 I'll post the what's new for that, too:

    v20000101:

  • Added a keypad emulation interface to the XWindows UI layer.
  • Added keypad emulation to the CV driver.
  • Started adding Apple ][ emulation.
  • Cleaned up some stuff in snd.h.
  • This release breaks all targets other than XWindows (and I'm in no position to fix them).

    v19991226:
  • Removed all of the debugger code (it's been dead for ages, time to get it out of the way).
  • Removed all ASM CPU cores (they weren't being used, and they were buggy).
  • Added a program to test the emu68k core.
  • Fixed the ColecoVision driver to run again (still no keypad, though).
  • Started debugging the emu68k core (still a ways to go).
  • Added preliminary support for DMA to the Genesis VDP.
  • Changed the Genesis VDP interface not to use procpointers.
  • Stripped out the code in the Genesis driver that compared CPU cores.
  • Added some (disabled) debugging code to the Genesis driver.
  • Added preliminary implementation of Z80 RAM to the Genesis driver.
  • Cleaned up some code in the NES driver.
  • Cleaned out some dead code and includes from the PCE driver.
  • Cleaned up the sg1000 driver.
  • Fixed the sg1000 driver to close down the sound system when it exits.
  • Cleaned up the SMS driver.
  • Fixed SMS VDP to initialize the VDP registers to default values.
  • Fixed some bugs with the sn76489 (SMS/GG, SG1000, CV) psg noise channel (still disabled).
  • Changed snd_unix.c to support (and default to) FreeBSD.
  • Fixed an obi-wan error in the tms9918 sprite renderer.
  • Fixed a typo in the new system detect routine ("smd", not "smb").
  • Moved all battery file support to tool.c (from SMS and NES drivers).
  • Changed the cheap hack used for the battery filename to be endian-independant.
  • Stripped out a lot of dead code in the XWindows UI code.
  • Added a new, hopefully easier to port, type system.
  • Removed the Zarzon driver from distribution (what? didn't I do this ages ago?).
  • With the number of changes in the codebase, I've probablt forgotten something, but those are the salient points. ^_^

You can download the sourcecode from the NES emulators page, DarcNES page and the NES emulators for Unix page. Thanks to Joe Bucci and the Destination Emulation crew for the news!
