Emulator Release: Tosbox Dec. 23 beta (DOS) news by rouge
21:00:  The new beta of Tosbox, Atari ST emulator. Without a real version number too. Runs under CWSDPMI, unlike the last beta, Dec. 18. This beta is also about 20% faster (on the development machine, a Cyrix 686). If you have problems with VESA syncing add a "mode delay n".

Get it at the DOS Atari ST page.

18:18:  Hey hey hey, like I said, I updated the Links page! I added like 2-3 new sites on to the list and ERASED all of the broken links! Now all of the links SHOULD work. Site News: 1999 is coming... news by zophar
17:41:  Since 1999 is coming soon, and it may be the last new year that we experience (bwuahahaa), I figured I'd post my New Year's resolutions right here.

    10) I will try to only post Nostradamus predictions every other month, for the weak of heart.
    9) I will refrain from beating ZD staff members with a hard brass whip from Castlevania II.
    8) I will stop rehiring staff members who delete front pages.
    7) I will play StarCraft for often.
    6) I will stop purchasing computer parts from Best (Worst) Buy.
    5) I will believe in God again (after all, i believe in myself all the time! bwuahahaha.)
    4) I will prepare myself to go to hell at the end of 1999.
    3) I will buy a 17" monitor so my eyes don't die at 1024X768.
    2) I will stop eD from purchasing a Voodoo Banshee.
    1) I will stop accepting free Cyrixes.

My creativity level today is not that high, so forgive the stupidity of 75% of these.

Emulator Release: DarcNES Updates news by inverse
15:50:  First of all, when I posted DarcNES about a week ago, I didn't realize it's for both Linux *and* DOS. I've now included it on the DOS NES Emulators page too, though you'll have to compile the DOS version yourself since one isn't provided from the official DarcNES page.

Ok.. now for the new release itself.. there have actually been two releases within the last 24 hours, so here's what's new in both.

    v.19981230:

  • SMB3 runs but status bar doesn't display.
  • The mapper system has been upgraded to handle extended mappers, but none have been implimented yet.

    v.19981231:
  • Add preliminary (untested) mapper 66.
  • Add preliminary (untested) mapper 78.

You can download the Linux binary and source code from the NES Emulators for Unix page and the source code to compile a DOS version from the NES Emulators for DOS/Win page.

Emulator Release: MAME v.34 DOS Final news by inverse
13:35:  The final DOS port of MAME v.34 has been released. The What's New seems to be untouched since Release Candidate 2 so unless someone tells me otherwise, I'll assume there were just minor bugfixes. You can download MAME from the MAME Ports page.

  • *Very* preliminary Mapper #25 support (Gradius 2)
  • New frame rate control

Site News: ZD Poll Mid-Week Update news by stick_fig
19:32:  Well, as I promised, I'm doing a update on how the poll is doing mid-week. Here's some info about the current poll:

Do emulators of current consoles (like the Color Game Boy and the Playstation) make you less likely to buy the system or games?

Choice 1 was: "Yes, because I don't have to buy the system to play the games."
It received 47 votes (12.7 percent).

Choice 2 was: "Yes, because I want to play only a few games made for the system(s)."
It received 54 votes (14.6 percent).

Choice 3 was: "No, it makes me more likely to by the system."
It received 107 votes (28.9 percent).

Choice 4 was: "No, it makes me equally likely to buy it one way or the other."
It received 132 votes (35.7 percent).

Choice 5 was: "I don't care. I wanna play MAME. I don't care about these new systems."
It received 30 votes (8.1 percent).

Anyway, the poll is still open, and will be open until Saturday.

Oh yeah, so my mind doesn't hit a blank while I'm doing these polls, I wouldn't mind any ideas for them. So, if you have any, e-mail me.

Site News: Back... news by zophar
19:20:  Well, I take a short vacation, and as usual, all hell breaks loose. But rest assured, things will be getting back to normal here. We are very sad to see InVerse leave, and hopefully, I can work something out to get him back (don't worry about the person who threatened him, it's being taken care of).

Also, there is a *slight* possibility that, unfortunately, www.zophar.net might cease to work sometime in the near future. Don't be alarmed, it's a small possibility. So, bookmark this page: The official ZD location page. This page will never move.

Of course, I'm probably being paranoid, but bookmark that page just in case. Thanks to all for visiting ZD. 1999 is almost upon us. :)

Site News: Another Resignation news by inverse
12:43:  When I rejoined ZD, I made a promise to Zophar that nothing bad would happen to the site as a result of my involvement. This promise was intended to mean that I would do nothing against ZD myself, but now, due to terrostic threats made against Zophar's Domain as a result of my participation as a staff member, I feel I must resign so as not to break my promise to Zophar. I apologize for any problems my leaving might cause but I'm sure Zophar's Domain will recover with no problem, as it always does. I'd like to thank Zophar for giving me a second chance and I wish that I could have did more with the opportunity. Maybe I'll be back in the future if the current issues can be resolved, but don't count on it. As a result of several recent occurances, I have a bad taste in my mouth concerning the emulation scene. I think it's about time I dropped out and focused on what emulation is all about, the games. I have a list of Nintendo games I was never able to beat as a child.. I plan to do something about that now. To paraphrase my own text file... Until next time, save your smart bombs, avoid the eggplants and be careful with the warp zones, because once you hit -1, you don't come back. End of line.

Misc. News: Emu Xpress Two-year Anniversary news by stick_fig
16:14:  Two years ago today, Emu Xpress (one of the most influential emulation sites around) was begun. It has seen better days, but it's still a great site to go to. It's my personal favorite.

Although I had to actually remind Lance McKay, the creator and maintainer of the site, that this was the big day, he left a little bit of a history of how the site was created and where it has gone from there. Anyway, e-mail Lance and give him a few kind words about the site (possibly to get him to update more :).

Misc. News: The State of ZD Address news by inverse
14:54:  Well, I couldn't update all morning because my browser was broken.. I had to downgrade back to Netscape 4.08 from 4.5. Now that I've finally got everything working again, I can't find anything worth updating about. If I'm missi ng something, somebody tell me, damnit. And as for the links page maintainer, he'll be making his debut very soon along with a big update to the links page, so stay tuned.

Frontend News: SNES GameCenter .6c news by inverse
12:24:  A bugfix has been released for SNES GameCenter .6c. Nothing new has been added but four significant bugs have been fixed:

  • It was not possible to run ZSNES version 7.15c in non-GUI mode, because the "-m" switch was disabled. Since trying to set the "-m" switch would cause ZSNES to abort in an error, I prevented SNES GameCenter from setting this switch. ZSNES 8.00 corrects the problem, and I have restored the "-m" switch.

  • Some users reported a file access error when trying to set their ROMs directory. This error was caused by ROM files whose attributes were set to READ ONLY. With this version, READ ONLY files will no longer cause SNES GameCenter to have file access err ors.

  • Because of a subtle change in the most recent versions of SNES9X, the emulator was no longer recognizing SNES GameCenter's requests for it to auto-skip frames. This has been corrected.

  • If a user accidently deleted ZSNES's ZGUICFG.DAT file, then SNES GameCenter would send recurring "file not found" messages. This has been corrected in a way that allows ZSNES to regenerate its ZGUICFG.DAT file.

You can download SNES GameCenter from the SNES Frontends page.

Frontend News: DBoy Runner 0.02 news by inverse
12:02:  NS has updated his Windows frontend for DBoy to version 0.02. There isn't exactly a What's New listing, but according to the documentation, here's what's currently done:

1)Regular & Game Boy Color ROM support
2)Convert Long File Names to DOS short file names so DBoy can parse it
    3)... not much else ...

DBoy Runner can be downloaded from the Gameboy Frontends section.

Emulator Release: UltraSat v0.04 news by inverse

The author has included an FAQ and compatibility list with the em ulator and his page is updated regularly concerning the progress of UltraSat.

You can download UltraSat from the Saturn Emulators page.

Site News: It's Catch Up time Again news by inverse
11:00:  Ok, I'm back from my little Christmas vacation and am working on catching up all the updates that were missed while I was away. I'd like to thank everyone that sends information my way so that I can post it here and also thanks to everyone that points out errors on ZD so that we can fix them. I usually try to reply to all e-mail I receive, but there was so much of it while I was gone that it might take me a day or so to get caught up with them, so cut me a little slack.

As always, if you have news or comments for ZD, you can catch me on IRC in #zopharsdomain on EFnet as InVerse or by e-mail at inverse@atheist.com. You can also reach me on ICQ at 8864196, AIM at InVerSeX or Yahoo P ager as InVerse2012, so keep the info coming and you'll see ZD continue to improve.

Site News: Poll update (finally). news by stick_fig
23:01:  Well, I finally decided to update the poll for once. I'm going to start updating it a little bit more often. That'll be every Saturday, with a mid-week update of where the poll is going every Wednesday. Anyway, on with the poll results.

Last weeks poll was: Will emulators ever replace the real thing?

    Here are this week's results:

Choice 1 was: "Of course. Emulators will become better than the real thing."
It received 104 votes (27.7 percent).

Choice 2 was: "Yes, but they won't have much of a choice. They'll all die if we don't."
It received 61 votes (16.3 percent).

Choice 3 was: "They'll never replace the real thing. The emulators are much worse."
It received 27 votes (7.2 percent).

Choice 4 was: "There will probably always be people using the real thing. It'll never happen."
It received 159 votes (42.4 percent).

Choice 5 was: "I don't know/don't care/am just voting here because it was on the news page."
It received 24 votes (6.4 percent).

This week's poll is: Do emulators of current consoles (like the Color Game Boy and the Playstation) make you less likely to buy the system or games? I personally don't know whether or not I want to hear the results to this. Anyway, VOTE.

Thanks to InVerse for reminding me to update the poll. :)

Well, it was almost all assembly, the DSP1 and IPX parts were coded in C. You should only download this version if 0.800c gave you problems (especially if sound doesn't work correctly for you, or if it crashes), or if you'd like lower memory requirements. Misc. News: Christmas and life in general... news by rouge
01:50:  Well, another Christmas is upon us, as you play your new ZSNES (with freeware roms I hope) and choke down your Christmas turkey here's a few things to think about: The world was just as screwed-up this time last year. Iraq is too lazy and poor (and not no mention ugly) to return our Ramadan present of Tomahawk cruise missles. President Clinton got his lump of coal early this year. And most of us have at least one year left to live, so be thankful and max out your credit cards, dammit.

Misc. News: Merry who? news by zophar
23:26:  Holiday greetings, and thanks for all the e-mails... but for those who didn't know, I'm jewish. I don't even believe in my own religion anymore, much less Christmas. Thanks for caring though. However, for those of you who are christian, I'll wish you all a Merry Christmas anyway. I'm going to sleep now (just beat Gabriel Knight II for the second time), so I'll let another staff member go crazy on the christmas wishes.

Emulator Release: ZSNES v0.800 news by [noam]
20:56:  Ah yes, a new version of ZSNES chock full of bugfixes and additions just in time for Christmas. The big addition in this version is the fact that it now runs Super Mario RPG! (Only the japanese version has been dumped correctly).

Straight out of the What's new...here's what's new (naturally):

  • Fixed up sound speeds. Timers were computed incorrectly.
  • Fixed a sprite priority bug
  • Fixed up a bug that prevented the gui to be disabled
  • Fixed up SPC capture
  • Fixed a bug when VIRQ is set on the same scanline as NMI
  • Implemented an automatic .IPS patcher. Just rename your .IPS file to the rom filename with the .IPS extension and ZSNES will patch the rom realtime without modifying the rom file's contents. Thanks to Neill Corlett for most of the .IPS info!
  • Snapshot capture/skip 2 frames option now returns back to the proper menu item
  • Fixed a calibration bug with 6/8button joysticks
  • Fixed up display in 640x480x8 new gfx engine
  • Fixed up hi resolution displays in all 640x480x8b modes
  • Fixed up a bug where Mode 7 becomes corrupt after selecting Save CFG from the GUI
  • Fixed a memory map bug in lorom DSP1 games
  • Fixed a potential DSP1 crashing bug where a negative value is being square rooted
  • Hopefully fixed the modem bug when using an IRQ that is bigger than 7
  • Fixed up an ADSR bug for games that changes ADSR mid-sample
  • Fixed up echo emulation (possibly slowed down emulation)
  • Fixed up a sprite caching bug
  • Fixed up a DSP1 byte check stall bug
  • Implemented a commandline to disable spc700 speed hacks (-7) Might help with some compatibility
  • Implemented SA-1 support (most functions emulated)! Unfortunately, it's still buggy. Thanks to the snes9x team for providing info!
  • Fixed a bug when selecting drive A/B while a disk is not in the drive caused a long check sequence
  • Implemented Keyboard support to most of Option, Sound, and GUI Option configurations in the GUI
  • Changed sound init code a bit. Hopefully improves sound card compatibility, but might also ruin it.
  • Implemented off by 1 line fix (-9). This may help compatibility and fix some minor graphic glitches, but may also ruin some too.

You can pick up the new ZSNES over at the SNES Emulators Page.

Misc. News: Why I've been "dead".... news by bnu
18:12:  I can't be online until the beginning of January, january 7th to be precise. Christmas costs me a load of money every year, and this year was no exception. When I get back I hope to be much more active, though.
    Ah, well. Cya in January.

Misc. News: G3 request news by zophar
13:21:  Sam Pettus has e-mailed me the following request, regarding his G3 document (available from the Genesis emulators page):

Guess what? I'm homebound by the ice storms that hit the U.S. today, so I'm doing some G3 research. I have a special favor to ask you, your friends, your users, etc. It's nothing complicated, and quite simple to do. I would like for everybody who owns original Sega CD games or Sega Saturn games based on Genesis/Sega CD titles to pull their copies and send me the following info on each title: author/vendor, copyright date, type, and language. If you can nail any of the other question marks in the Sega CD section at the same time, I'd welcome the input. I don't want a single question mark left in the new G3 if at all possible, but I'll need everybody's help to accomplish that goal.

    Thanks!

If you can help him out, please e-mail him.

Emulator Release: Pasofami 0.0h news by zophar
13:07:  A new release of Pasofami, a NES emulator for Windows that has been around longer than this site, Archaic Ruins, and probably even iNES, is now available. I have no idea what's new in 0.0h, since the entire documentation is in japanese, but it seems that the GUI has been redone. Anyone who has any information on what's new, please e-mail me. You can download Pasofami 0.0h from the NES emulators page.

I hereby resign as links maintainer. Now I'm sure that most of you are going to start making up stories about why I resigned...the reasons are listed above. This is not political, ZD isn't gonna end up hacked tomorrow by me, and I'm still cool with ZD.

Emulator Release: Neo Danji 0.044 news by zophar
12:44:  A new release of Neo Danji, an emulator for DOS for the Neo Geo, is now available. Since the documentation is an oriental language, I can't tell anyone what's new. Anyone who knows what's new (and not some cryptic translator which gives some defunct translation), please e-mail me. You can download Neo Danji 0.044 from the Neo Geo emulators page.

Site News: The State of ZD news by inverse
12:03:  Ok.. Zophar and I are getting ready to do a whole slew of updates (together this time, not just one of us doing 10 or so at once) but I thought I'd drop a quick note to keep everyone up to date on a few things.

You should have noticed over the last few days that the news has been updated more than usual. To help us improve things even more, we need you to let us know what's happening. If you see something that hasn't found it's way to ZD yet, let us know. You can e-mail the appropriate staff member from the submissions page or for an even faster response, check #zopharsdomain on EFnet. There's usually at least 1 or 2 staff members hanging out that can do your update.

We also need your feedback concerning the site. We can't improve things unless we know what you do and don't like so don't be shy about what you think should be done. There will be some new sections popping up after the holidays and maybe a few surprises as well.

On a final note, I'd like to thank the ppl that e-mailed me kewl Hello Kitty stuff and questions concerning Hello Kitty. If you're unfamiliar with Hello Kitty, I'd start with the official Sanrio website and then do a web search for Hello Kitty and you'll soon be wrapped up in the eliteness that is Hello Kitty. ; )

So with all that said, let the updating commence and be sure to explore ZD when you get a chance, you're bound to find something you never noticed before.

Emulator News: Tech request from dtmnt.com news by zophar
21:34:  Fellow emulationworld.com website, dtmnt.com, is requesting help and information for the following things:

  • The schematics only for TMNT2/Turtles in Time and The Simpsons (or any other Konami games apart from TMNT). Not the files, the schematics. Please ask before sending anyhting big.
  • Info on ADPCM and the different methods of decoding it. At the moment the method I use is I take each four-bit value and move the sample up or down using it. And fading it a bit. ADPCM isn't a standard, it seems to be just a general class of compression. I've tried the standard stuff, and the results make the speech worse. I
guess Konami must do it their own way! What method do Sega Emus use to decompress ADPCM? If you have ever decompressed ADPCM on the fly, please e-mail me!
  • Memory maps for the sound in SF2, Outrun (ie. what is the z80 memory map), After Burner etc (anything which uses a z80 and a ym2151 for sound). Note - not the actual games, just the sound!
  • Some info in clear english for a complete idiot such as myself for how the ym2151 works! (I've seen the technical docs and they scare me....!)

If you can help out Dave, please e-mail him: dayvee@rocketmail.com. Don't forget to check out the official DTMNT website.

Site News: Update notes news by zophar
20:59:  I have been working the past few days, since I'm off from college for a month, so I haven't had time to do many updates. InVerse has done a great job maintaining the site while I've been away; expect me to update as usual starting tommorow.

One other note has to be said. PLEASE, people, do NOT e-mail me ROM requests. This is not a commercial game ROM site. We do not carry any games that have not been released into the public domain. The Lamer E-mail page will be updated again if this continues. Thanks, and have a great Christmas, Qwanza, whatever.

Utility News: Magic Kit 2.01 news by inverse
15:35:  David Michel has released an update to his PCE development tool, Magic Kit. The changes are as follows:

  • more powerful assembler, now with:
    -- conditional assembly
    -- enhanced macros
    -- user defined functions
    -- data-groups
-- new concept of video object
  • support library to make programming easier
  • more examples of code
  • better documentation:
    -- programming tutorials
    -- technical reference doc
    -- assembler manual
    -- support library documentation

Even bigger is the fact that Magic Kit now supports NES development! The NES tools are new and as a result aren't quite as advanced as the PCE development tools but they're still a very nice addition to an already great product.

You can check out the Magic Kit 2.01 at the newly created Development Utilities section. Note that this section is not yet linked to the index, so you'll have to follow the preceding link.

Utility News: Thingy .98 news by inverse
13:42:  Necrosaro has updated his excellent ROM hacking/translating utility Thingy to version .98. The changes are as follows:

  • Pointer calculator support (& table file entry)! currently it works along with the inserter, not standalone.
  • Inserter changed around a bit, now it will be able to insert larger scripts.

You can download Thingy .98 from the Translation Utilities section.

Emulator Release: NLKE .003 news by inverse
13:34:  NLKE, the combined efforts of the NLKSNES and ESNES teams, has been updated to version .003b and features a huge list of improvements/bug fixes. Straight from the readme (cuz it'd take hours to do it any other way) here's what's new:

  • Some errors in the tile-to-tile mode have been fixed, and also the
compatibility has been increased by rewriting some parts of the code.
  • Audio code has been rewritten for a better legibility while some errors were fixed, resulting in a better sound in some games.
  • Solved a problem with mode 0, it was drawing only the first line
    of each tile in BG3.
  • Fixed a little problem with the I flag (king of the monsters).
  • Changed mode 21 mapping slightly, this should allow bs-zelda starting.
  • Solved a problem with mode 21, it was being allocated more memory
than neccesary (in fact, the double).
  • Register $2115 now it's being initialized to 0x80 (15puzzle).
  • Now HDMA doesn't allow a channel that has been activated during an
vblank to be activated again before next (demo 2.68 Mhz).
  • Solved a problem while bank switching in transfers over register $2180 (dq5, captain tsubasa...).
  • Fixed an error in SRAM memory protecting when actually there is not SRAM present (bruce lee).
  • Correctly implemented RAM/ROM zone in spc memory (super punchout,
    grandhistoria, sponi).
  • Interrupts were being executed 1 line after than they should (energy breaker).
  • Improved the autodetection of the memory mode checking the checksum and the reset vector (brunswick bowling).
  • Solved a problem with the reading of VRAM through DMA (dkc3).
  • Implemented the NMI in emulation mode (demo profight).
  • Fixed an error in the TXS operation in emulation mode.
  • Corrected the autodetection of DSP1.
  • Partially implemented DSP1 emulation (thanks to zsnes authors).
  • Included support for 32 Mbit ROMs in mode 20 (tokimeki memorial, jikkyo pro wrestling 96 - max volt).
  • Included a database with the memory mode for some ROMs that are conflictive due to corrupted headers.
  • Included the parameters -M20 and -M21, used to force mode 20 or mode 21.
  • Included the parameter -I, used to force interleaving.
  • Solved some problems with mode 7 ext (f1 grand prix).
  • Included the IRQ in emulation mode (demo c64e).
  • Fixed a problem that was causing loop overflow and locking in some games (topgear2, kawasaki).
  • Compiling done with SEAL 1.05, now includes compatibility with the ensoniq PCI soundcards.
  • Included native support for .zip files (thanks to the authors of the related routines included in the mame source :-)
  • Included support for .ips patches, for using it is needed the param -ips.
  • Included support for mode 25 (tales of phantasia and seiken3 - thanks to the authors of zsnes). Included the parameter -M25.

  • Solved a problem that was causing the mouse not to work sometimes while the GUI was running.
  • Now it's allowed to specify files as drive:file, before it was causing problems with multifiles.
  • Included a gray degradation of the output image while the GUI is active.
  • Included the option -envx, it's needed in some ROMs.
  • Found and fixed a lot of bugs in the 65816, the SPC700, DSP, PPU, HDMA...too numerous to be mentioned here (yes, we've done it again :-))))

Whew... ok, for those of you still with me, check out NLKE on the SNES Emulators section.

It's for Win95/DirectX, and a demo of it is available on the site.

Here's where you can find them:

Also, thanks to InVerse for doing his update. :)

Site News: SNES9x Source Uploaded and Other Problems Fixed news by inverse
13:01:  Ok.. I apologize for not updating ZD sooner. I should have did several updates by now but I've spent the last 3 hours trying to download the SNES9x Source Code (which I forgot to include when I added the emulator). After 3 hours and 25 resumes, something crashed and the download was deleted. Huge thanks to Cyber Warrior X for DCCing me the source after that.

As you've probably already concluded, the source code for SNES9x 1.16a is now available on ZD. I've also fixed all the broken links that were reported to me via various ppl who e-mailed me. Remember, if you find even a tiny problem, let me know so I can fix it. Thanks to everyone that e-mailed me concerning things that needed to be fixed and apologies to Stick Figure 98 for making him wait to do his updates while I fixed things and acquired the SNES9x source.

Emulator Release: SNES9x 1.16 for DOS (Non-GUI) news by inverse
16:09:  Fast on the heels of SNES9x 1.16 for Linux comes the DOS (w/o GUI) port of one half of the SNES emulation scene's big 2. Here's what's new according to the docs (and yes, it looks very similar to the Linux What's New but I didn't screw up and paste the wrong list. ;):

  • Fixed a case where the -forcelorom option didn't work - the case was required for Formation Soccer which claims in its ROM header to use the same memory map as Super FX ROM, it doesn't.
  • Pulled apart a real SNES using a crowbar (great fun), just to look at what speed the SPC700 is actually clocked at for more acturate relative emulation speed.
  • Implemented SPC700 cycle counting in the hope the improved timing would fix Tales'; no such luck but at least the -ratio option is obsolete now.
  • Implemented executing SPC700 instructions during DMA, fixes BS Zelda, Goal and Smurfs 2 lock up at start and music pausing briefly when ROMs do lots of DMA, usually between game screens.
  • Scrapped the i386 asm SPC700 code - it was the cause of the music not restarting after a battle in Chrono Trigger and FF3 and I didn't realise because the bug had already occurred in the test freeze-file I had.
  • Fixed RGB subtraction bug on displays with only 5 bits for green, e.g. RGB555 displays. The GREEN_HI_BIT variable was always set to a value for 6 bit green displays.
  • Added the SA-1 memory map, still a long way to go before any SA-1 game will run.
  • Optimized some of the sound code. It's nothing too major, but on my computer I got about a 1-2 FPS increase in speed on some games.

SNES9x for DOS is available from the SNES Emulators section and if for some reason you're unfortunate enough to need the Macintosh post, it's available over at emulation.net.

Emulator Release: FCE Ultra Beta 2 news by inverse
15:14:  FCE Ultra is a Famicom/NES emulator for DOS which is based on the FCE source code. According to the web page, major modifications have been made to the source, resulting in drastically increased compatibility. Unfortunately, there is no documentation because, in the authors own words, he "doesn't feel like making any" but there are several screen shots available from the site.

Check out the FCE Ultra Homepage to see the screen shots of FCE Ultra in action and then download the emu from ZD's NES Emulator Section.

Emulator Release: SNES9x 1.16a for Linux Libc5 news by inverse
13:17:  In the holiday spirit, the SNES9x team has released version 1.16a for Linux users. The current version is only available for Libc5 users but others are sure to follow. Straight from the readme file, here's what's new in this release:

  • Fixed a case where the -forcelorom option didn't work - the case was required for Formation Soccer which claims in its ROM header to use the same memory map as Super FX ROM, it doesn't.
  • Pulled apart a real SNES using a crowbar (great fun), just to look at what speed the SPC700 is actually clocked at for more acturate relative emulation speed.

  • Added the SA-1 memory map, still a long way to go before any SA-1 game will run.

I bet you'll be surprised to find out that you can download SNES9x 1.16a from the SNES Emulators for Unix page. Ok.. so maybe you won't..

Emulator Release: DarcNES news by inverse
12:51:  DarcNES is a new NES emulator for Linux. It supports the most common mappers and features sound support. The initial release was 3 days ago and a couple bugfixes have been released since then. As I'm not currently a Linux user, I'm not very familiar with the file format so I would appreciate if someone could go to the NES Emulators for Unix section and try out the files to make sure I have the proper ones uploaded.

11:03:  Ok.. first I'd like to apologize for taking so long to do any updates. I don't have 'net access on Saturdays or Sundays so I can't do any weekend updates but due to the weather and the fact I was out of town, I was unable to do any updates yesterday either.

I'm currently in the process of scouring the entire site for missed updates, bad links, etc. If you find any problems, please let me know by e-mailing me at inverse@atheist.com or by catching me on IRC on the nickname InVerse. I'm in #zopharsdomain on EFnet just about all morning and afternoon on weekdays. This is also a good place to submit news if you want a prompt reply.

Emulator Release: Atari800Win 2.5c news by zophar
23:55:  Another day, another version of Atari800Win. Here's a shortened listing of what's new in version 2.5c:

  • Corrected small but very hard to find bug with some saved registry values blowing keyboard joysticks (again). Believe me I'm more tired of keyboard joystick problems than you are.
  • Small bug fix to prevent garbled screens when changing hardware mode in a stretched windowed mode with scanlines
  • Fixed a potentially confusing drive-path remember problem when a temporary disk was mounted (ie a loaded executable disk)
  • Fixed a small problem in saving/restoring the load exe path
  • DDraw windowed scanline mode was darker than GDI, fixed
  • This version invalidates older save-state files - they will need to be resaved.
  • Re-synced with the general Atari800 code base. Fixed a couple of Antic problems.
  • Fixed screen getting offset when switching hardware types.
  • Fixed the damn keyboard joystick not being detected (was only happening on machines that have no hardware joystick devices, and guess what - all of mine do. Grrr).
  • Joystick selections are saved permanently. If you change your stick config around (hardware wise), it won't crash, but you will probably have to reconfigure via the joystick selection dialog.
  • The scanline modes are now driven by highly tweaked assembly, mostly because I changed the way they worked.

You can download Atari800Win 2.5c from the Atari 8-bit/5200 emulators page.

Misc. News: Update on the Mick Foley/Time issue news by zophar
20:42:  It appears that the many wrestling sites on the internet have spread a false rumour:

"I'm afraid you have been misinformed. We honestly do not care who wins the poll. We welcome all opinions. After all, our TIME 100 poll for greatest leaders of the 20th Century was won online by Attaturk, thanks to millions of votes from Turkey, and the TIME 100 poll for greatest artists and entertainers of the 20th Century was won by an obscure French singer. That's fine with us. As for the other things you've heard:

"No one from TIME ever said the following: "...Mick Foley has no place on our list, as he has not done anything significant for this nation, hence, we will, effective tomorrow, remove Mick Foley from the polls-and if he is voted for again, he will be removed again."

"We believe that this comment was sent around as a sort of urban legend. We could care less who you or anyone else votes for, as evidenced by the assortment of characters who have populated the poll. The reason the Time Man of the Year poll keeps coming down is because some moron keeps unleashing a voting "bot, which effectively shuts down service for the rest of our users. The matter has been referred to the proper authorities; we're hopeful the culprit will be caught and prosecuted for a denial of service attack. In the mean time, rest assured that you can vote for anyone, including Mick Foley, Hulk Hogan and anyone else you can think of. Feel free to pass this message on; we're getting deluged with mail from pro-Foley folks who are laboring under the same misinformation as you.

So, Mick Foley still has a chance. :)

Misc. News: Mick Foley, Time Magazine, and things news by zophar
14:11:  This is totally non-emulation related, but I feel that this has to be said. For anyone into pro-wrestling, you probably know that Mick Foley, aka Mankind/Cactus Jack/Dude Love in the WWF, was #1 in Time Magazine's 'Man of the year' poll. It looked as if he was going to win it... and then Time.com issued this statement:

"...Mick Foley has no place on our list, as he has not done anything significant for this nation, hence, we will, effective tomorrow, remove Mick Foley from the polls-and if he is voted for again, he will be removed again."

Even for those of you who have no idea who Mick Foley is, I'm sure you realize that a great injustice is being done. Why should Time Magazine have the right to tell US who we think the man of the year is? 1984 anyone? All I can say is, I will no longer read Time Magazine, and anyone who feels the way I do should e-mail Time and let them know how you feel about this.

Emulator Release: NES4PC v0.25 news by zophar
19:30:  A new version of NES4PC, Akilla's NES emulator for Windows, is now available. There's tons new in this release:

NES4PC v0.25 has an all-new Scanline-based rendering engine, for fast & accurate graphics rendering! Interrupts are fixed, causing many games such as the final fantasy series to work. There are a number of 6502 bugs fixed as well. However, one of the more important things is that because of those fixes, I was able to accurately implement many more mappers. All the mappers for a VERY large portion of the nes games out there are now fully and corretly implemented. Directsound support is now added for pulse channels 1 and 2. Trainers also are now fixed. SRAM is working and fully compatable with nesticle SRAMs, so pop your FF1E.SAV file right into the NES4PC directory. There are also some optimizations, so it should run faster than last version.

You can download NES4PC v0.25 from the NES emulators page.

Emulator Release: fMSX 2.0 Beta news by zophar
19:07:  Marat Fazyullin has e-mailed ZD to let us know that version 2.0 beta of his MSX emulator has been released. Here's what he had to say:

After a long delay, I have finally released a beta of the new version of fMSX, the ubiquituous MSX/MSX2/MSX2+ emulator! Complete list of features and the list of new features and fixes can be found in the documentation at http://www.komkon.org/fms/fMSX/.

This is a quite raw beta version which means many things may have gone broken since the old version. I expect those among you who are proficient MSX hackers to look for bugs and submit bug reports and bug fixes to me, as I simply have no time to do thorough bug hunting myself.

Be sure to check it out. Unix versions are available so far.

Emulator News: DeCent: Dreamcast emulator (no joke) news by zophar
06:33:  This is a Zophar's Domain EXCLUSIVE. That means, you see it here first. All future updates having to do with this will be announced on ZD. I spent a while trying to figure out how I would explain this one to all of you who visit ZD, without sounding like I'm on drugs :) But I assure ALL of you, this is NO JOKE. A new emulator is in the works: the world's first Dreamcast emulator. The authors of this emulator wish to remain anonymous, so I will respect their wishes. However, I guarantee all of you that this is a LEGITIMATE attempt to emulate the DC. No, it won't run at 60 FPS on a P200, this is not a miracle emulator. But it is without a doubt, a real project.

Below, you will find two screenshots of the emulator running a DC demo, called "Teapot". Notice that it's running at 2.5 FPS. Doesn't sound very impressive... except when you consider the fact that it runs 2.5 FPS on an Intel P200 MMX, in software rendering mode. This means that for those of us with 3D cards, it can run even faster. Enjoy these 2 screenshots from DeCent, and remember: I promise all of you that this is not a trick, this is a 100% legitimate emulator attempt.

Emulator Release: Hu6280 1.84 news by zophar
02:20:  What better way to try my new processor/motherboard than to try the new release of Hu6280, version 1.84? I can't think of any :) Here's what's new in version 1.84 of this great TG16 emulator:

  • Investigated CDROM emulation further, now we have some games working (.ISO files only)
  • Fixed a major bug in CPU emulation
  • Tweaked GFX emulation (now faster and more accurate)
  • Populous now works! (96% of all hucards games work !!)
  • Added 'L' key to skip hu6280 screen :)-~

Thanks to kueller for the news. You can download Hu6280 1.84 from the Turbo Grafx 16 emulators page.

Site News: New Motherboard/CPU problem resolved! news by zophar
01:04:  Thanks to everyone who sent e-mails, people on IRC who msg'd me, and the like, but when I realized how I had fixed it, not ONE of you had e-mailed me the correct way :) Here's how I did it.

First, I determined through motherboard program identifiers that my VXPRO+ is a VIA Apollo VPX chipset which was remarked. I followed the many links to 5 websites with identical motherboards and chipsets and the bios who relabeled it to suit their own needs (CYRIX/IBM anyone?) For those of you who are curious:

    Vendor=VIA Technologies Incorporated No PCI-INT
    Device=VT82C585VP Apollo VPX Chipset, System/PCI Ctrl., Rev=23h

Computer ID : FC, Type : AT
    BIOS Date : 02/03/98
Award BIOS found : Award Modular BIOS v4.51PG
    Award ID-String : 02/03/98-573+UMC8670-2A5LDH09C-00
    Board/BIOS-Version : Release 02/04/1998 S ROM - NOT FOR SALE
    OEM : HSIN TECH
    URL : http://www.pcchips.com
    Chipset : 573+UMC8670 //VIA VPX

The way I fixed the video slowdown problem was by flashing the BIOS with the new 2/4/98 update! Stuff is way faster than it was before, and faster than my old Cyrix PR166 was. Granted, this new one is only a Cyrix PR200, but the difference is there! A few people I want to thank for getting me through this dilema:

Rob`: Your kind donation of the VIA Apollo VPX chipset/motherboard and the Cyrix PR200 is what saved my life. I'll never forget you for it.
hypr: You lent me your PC for a week so I wouldn't go crazy. Thanks!
gb: You traded me your Matrox Millenium I for my Voodoo Rush because it wouldn't fit in the new motherboard... wait, why am I thanking you?
All the people who e-mailed me: Thanks for trying to help me.
Myself: I figured out after 8 hours where my chipset came from and where the correct BIOS was. Go me!

Thanks to everyone again, I'm really back now :)

Emulator Release: X-Mame v0.34b8.1 for Unix news by rouge
18:28:  The new beta version of the multiple arcade machine emulator, now running over 1000 games, wow! Anyway, what's new:

  • Everything from dos beta 8
  • DGA now is a compile option for x11, just like mitshm, use -x11-mode (see -help) to choice between normal window and DGA, or use left-alt + home as a hotkey to jump to fullscreen, and left-alt + insert to jump to a window
  • Rearranged and rewrote most of the joysticks support, upto 4 joysticks are now supported and you can compile in more then 1 one joytype, and select which one will be used runtime with -joytype
  • Support for new linux joystick driver interface, use I386JOYSTICK if the new headers are found they are automaticly used
  • Removed -display commandline option as it intervened with DGA,
sorry about that, use $(DISPLAY) instead, or write a wrapper script
  • Added support for mame's internal debugger, see makefile.unix
only enable this if you need it! It's slow
  • Which obj files are build in the unix dir is now display-method dependent
  • Unixware7 support

Emulator Release: Snes9x v1.15 for libc5 news by rouge
18:10:  The new version of Snes9x for libc5 systems, the libc6 version should be around shortly. This version is about the same as the dos port, what's new:

  • Improved 8-bit sound generation slightly, but it still sounds very poor compared to 16-bit sound
  • Implemented the Tales of Phantasia memory map using the information supplied by zsKnight, had to also implement a de-interleave routine to work around a ROM feature and Snes9x CPU instruction fetching implementation detail
  • Added a frames-per-second on-screen display option
  • Fixed the final glitch bug with the Mario Kart track display - the byte code for the termination of the DSP1 raster command wasn't been recognized
  • Disabled a NMI/DMA hack for Rise of the Robots, was causing problems for Mario Kart and 'Robots wasn't working correctly anyway
  • Optimized the mode 7 rendering a little
  • Changed tile rendering code to use offsets into screen buffer rather than direct pointers ready for z-buffer implementation
  • Changed V-blank NMI to occur immediately after a WAI instruction, Toy Story required this
  • Fixed reading of H-DMA line counter register, Top Gear 3000 needed this
  • Ripped off large parts of ZSNES's DSP1 code (with _Demo_'s and zsKnight's approval), now Mario Kart works almost 100%
  • Added a check to see if a vertical scanline IRQ register change will cause a H-IRQ later on the current scanline. Pilot Wings needed this
  • Fixed possible crash bug in clip window code when both windows had two spans, could actually cause Chrono Trigger to crash the emulator
  • Fixed a lock-up problem with the C Super FX code, Star Fox and executing a few 'FX instructions per scan-line (required for Winter Gold)

Frontend News: MAME OVER 1.01 news by bnu
17:31:  Yep, yep. The MAME frontend that's all over Daves Classics has been added to Zophar's Domain now :) I must say that this frontend IS really good frontend. It's not hard to configure and you'll have it up and running in no time. Trouble could appear if you don't keep mameover.exe in your MAME directory, though, so be sure to keep it in the right dir. Emulator Release: Z26 1.22 news by zophar
23:27:  A new version of my favorite Atari 2600 emulator, Z26, is now available. One thing new in 1.22:

  • z26 now comes up with a list of ROMs to choose from if you type z26 with no parameters. In addition to being able to navigate the list in the usual way, with arrow keys and Home/End, you can type the first few characters of the ROM that you want to run and the cursor will position itself on the first ROM that matches the characters that you've typed. The currently matched character is highlighted. To run a random ROM, hit the backslash key.

You can download Z26 1.22 from the Atari 2600 page.

Site News: Regarding my new computer news by zophar
22:36:  Well, it's been a long two weeks, but I'm finally all set up. A HUGE thanks goes out to Rob` for the new motherboard and Cyrix PR200, you saved my life man :)

Anyways, I've also traded video cards with a friend (my Voodoo Rush could no longer fit in there, so I now have a Matrox Millenium...I can live without the 3D for now). The only odd thing I noticed was there was a slight speed DECREASE, even though I'm now running the mobo at 75mhz (old one was 66) and the CPU at 150mhz (PR200), as the old one was 133mhz (PR166). This new motherboard also has 512K cache, as opposed to the old one with 256KB, so it should be going a lot faster, not slower!

But anyways, that's the only real problem, and I can live with it for now. I'm guessing there may be something incorrect set in the BIOS (it's AWARD BIOS) that's causing video speed, possibly, to be slower than normal (the slower speed was also evident with the Voodoo Rush, so it wasn't the change of video cards that caused the slowdown). Anyone who can offer any help/suggestions can e-mail me.

Updates will now return to normal.

Utility News: Hexpose 0.215 news by total
11:14:  This was actually released the 24th April this year, but someone must have missed it :). Well... it's here now and this is what's new in this and the last version (0.210) since it was also missed.

    0.210

  • Hexadecimal search implemented. Let's say you search for the string '0E35EA': HEXposure will first search for the actual text string ('0E35EA'), and then for the string that the values 0E 35 EA represent. If it finds either, the file pointer will be set appropriately.

  • The executable is now smaller, mainly because the code is tighter than before (which also means it's faster). Isn't it great, now you don't have to worry about HEXposure eating up your hd anymore (it's 5K). :-)

  • Some minor bug fixes.

    0.215
  • Just a file input bug-fix, and it's a pretty serious one. HEXposure didn't close the file after writing to it, so when DOS ran out of filehandles, the editor crashed. If this happened, the file would be completely erased... It's fixed now, hope nobody encountered this bug.

Get this version of Hexpose now at the NES Utilites Page

Misc. News: Patent Pending returns news by zophar
20:38:  I received an e-mail from MEGAߥTE, regarding the return of his website, Patent Pending:

After a month of downtime after SimpleNet kicked us off for breaking their ignorant ToS, Patent Pending is back! We have decided to create a game site network, under our old emudev name Konfiskated Teknologies. We now have our own domain and are hosted by maindomain (which is a lot nicer that SimpleNet). My computer suffered a hard drive crash, and we were not able to retrieve all of our files. Most notably, the whole Emulators section was lost. We are rebuilding as fast as we can however, and I should have about 50% of the site up by tomorrow night. After that, pages will have to be replaced one-by-one. It will be slow at first, but we have great plans ahead! The new URL is http://kontek.net/pp

Emulator Release: SPCAMP 0.400 news by zophar
00:01:  Well, SPCAMP is an emulator (for the SPC700) as well as a player, so I called it an emulator release. Sue me. • Fixed an ADSR bug
  • Better echo support
  • Fixed a bug that caused incorrect sounds when another .spc is loaded
  • Fixed up timer
  • Fixed up spc playback speed (bit faster now)

Misc. News: SNES9X author interviewed. news by stick_fig
15:05:  A pal of mine, Geechyguy, recently put up a pretty good interview with Gary Henderson (co-author of SNES9x) about SNES emulation in general. One of the questions is about what happened to make the development of SNES9x halt for a while (really interesting). It's pretty good (even for my high standards).

Read it here, and while you're at it, read Geechyguy's page, the Emulation Newstand.

Thanks to the Geech for telling me about this.

Site News: Poll update (finally) news by stick_fig
14:46:  I took a look at the poll, realised it was old, and decided to update it. Here's last week's poll:

What is your opinion of the recent IDSA shutdowns?

Choice 1 was: "I wish that the IDSA would die."
It received 187 votes (51.5 percent).

Choice 2 was: "We should start a petition or something."
It received 65 votes (17.9 percent).

Choice 3 was: "People should support organizations like CLEAR."
It received 31 votes (8.5 percent).

Choice 4 was: "The IDSA has to protect their members, don't they? Give them a break."
It received 52 votes (14.3 percent).

Choice 5 was: "I never visited any of the affected sites anyway. I don't care one way or the other."
It received 28 votes (7.7 percent).

As you can see, the results say something -- the IDSA is not liked by most of us (like we needed a poll to tell us this). Still, nearly 15% of people thought the IDSA was in the right, which was pretty much unexpected on my part.

This week's poll: Will emulators ever replace the real thing?

With all these emulators becoming just about perfect, will emulators be good enough to replace consoles or arcade machines someday?

    Anyway, go vote.

Emulator Release: Atari 800 version 2.5 news by nitro
19:27:  Well, a new version of Atari 800 was released today. Here is whats new in version 2.5 of Atari 800:

  • Any "sticky key" problems should be fixed on slow machines
  • Warmstart reappears on F5 as if by magic :-)
  • Added option to load Atari executable files individually instead of requiring a disk image.
  • John Frias contributed some icons (mine are retired to no artistic talent land now).
  • Fixed a problem with the R-TIME cartridge returning the incorrect month. BTW This should come as a surprise to no one, but the R-TIME is not year 2000 compliant.
  • Fixed a small timing problem on keyboard input.
  • Blank scan line option added for some video modes. Read the readme.txt for why I still think this is a *really* stupid idea.
  • Built a new ZLIB DLL which appears much less touchy about alignment.
  • Drive status can be set directly from the disk drive dialog. This is mainly so images can be switched to read-only on the fly for some demos.
  • Corrected small joystick bug that prevented the keypad from working as joystick on port 1 while a real joystick was used on port 2.
  • Inserted a completely bogus wait after DDraw SetDisplayMode that corrects garbage sometimes left on the screen.
  • 640x480 is now a "no visible menu" mode. Use F10 to get a menu (or the keyboard accelerators - e.g. Alt-A + L is Atari/Load Exe).

If you want to download Atari 800, go to the Atari 5200 homepage

Emulator Release: Retrocade v1.10 news by alamone
    18:51:  New Retrocade released. Here's what's new:

  • RIVA 128 Quarter screen problem worked around. Turned out to be a VESA bug in the RIVA 128's BIOS that set the horizontal cutoff. This is an acknowledged bug by Riva themselves, *NOT* an actual bug in Retrocade! MGL Makes this VESA call, most other programs do not. Scitech Display Doctor is no longer required to work around this problem. Many thanks to Riva corporation for assistance in getting a workaround for it!

  • Bosconian, Dig Dug, Power Drive, Max RPM, Missile Command and Galaga added!

  • Fixed num/scroll/shift lock problem affecting system keys

  • Second player controls in Tapper/Root Beer Tapper fixed

  • Record game abilities added! (see accompanying documentation)

  • -romdir Does multiple ROM pathnames now! Just use the ';' separator

  • Added horizontal vertical sizing/positioning for vector games - OSD option

  • Added time/date/size stamping to defctrls.ini so it's only parsed when it changes. Makes for a faster startup time.

  • Game= startup time increased because we now date/time/sizestamp the ZIP files and assume they're all good if they match.

  • Added arcade history information to UI (This is really cool - check it out!)

  • Added scanline, vsync, tweak, etc... as options in the UI

  • Added game and global Retrocade options into the UI

  • Snow Brothers now has sound!

  • Sundance player 2 support added and defctrls.ini fixed

  • Nova and Hyperspace controls added to Solar Quest

  • War Of The Worlds key name mapping fixed ("shields" instead of "forward")

  • Corrected brightness in all monochrome vector games so that the differences in intensities are more pronounced.

  • All Cinematronics games have dip switch settings

  • Cabinet mode added (see cabinet.ini file and accompanying documentation!)

  • Modified -romlist command so that UI doesn't come up when invoked

  • Barrels rotate properly in Donkey Kong (bug in mz80)

  • Time drift problem in Discs Of Tron fixed

  • Fixed multiple command line option problem

  • Enabled more video modes and removed tweaked modes if -tweak was provided

  • -tweak, -modex, and -splash now sticky

  • GameLog and VidLog resilient to files not being able to be created

  • Added scanline modes for 224x288, 256x256, and 288x224!

  • Monochrome debugging card routines removed so as to not screw up people's machines.

  • Minor fix to Burgertime WRT service mode crashing

  • Copyright screen comes up in 320x200 mode now, in addition to being a lot cleaner on startup

  • Defender CMOS RAM save area fixed so you don't have to reset it each time

  • Fixed a bug that kept 320x200 mode from coming up at all

  • If less than 4 video modes available, an error is now displayed rather than giving a blank screen or locking up the machine.

  • Code will now drop back to non-backdrop mode if 16bpp mode isn't available (for vector games)

  • Fixed Frogger's waterline to be equal to the real thing

  • Rejects a sampling rate of > 22050khz when a DSP prior to 4.x is found (sound card silence problem)

  • Fixed OSD and FPS not being restored properly between games or going in and out of the UI.

  • Pacman (and variants) sound fixed

  • Food Fight controls work much better now

  • Added -nosw command line option to prevent the sidewinder from being looked at or probed for

  • Moon Cresta increased in speed by 10%

  • Retrocade executable now 681K thanks to UPX!

  • Download the new Retrocade at the Multi Arcade Emulators page.

Utility News: Lewpy's Glide driver for PSEmuPro v1.1.15Beta6 released! news by chrisss
18:09:  A new version of Lewpy's Glide driver was released. There is ALOT new, I'll just list whats new in the latest beta. Check the docs for a full list:

  • * ver. 1.0.15 Beta 6 - 29.11.1998
  • - fixed another crashing bug
  • Yep, yet another one squashed! This one was in some old code, that pre-dates my work :) Anyway, this lets the demo of MediEvil play, so I'm sure it will help other games as well.

  • - Messed up menu graphics in GT
  • Corrected this. Probably helps other games as well.

  • - Messed up dialogue text in MediEvil
  • No-one would have seen this yet :) Corrected this. Probably helps other games as well.

  • - Fixed Screen Scaling
  • At last!! My screen resolutions are the same as Kaz's. No more dead area at the bottom of the screen!! Thanks to Kaz for his latest code for this.

  • Known Issues
  • - Messed up graphics
  • Skeletal menu at the start of MediEvil demo is not displaying right. This may affect other games too.

  • - Incorrect MDEC display
  • I have heard reports of MDEC playing back in white, or really slowly. I am investigating this.

You can download Lewpy's Glide driver from the PSEmuPro Plugins page.

Emulator Release: Echo 0.1b news by zophar
17:14:  Previously known as OidsEmu, this Atari ST emulator for DOS was started with one purpose in mind: to run the Atari ST game, Oids, which it does. It's still not complete, however, so most games still won't run.

This version, 0.1b, (released last week) is more compatible than the last one, has sound emulation, among other changes. You can download Echo 0.1b from the Atari ST emulators page.

Emulator Release: Snes9x DOS v1.15 news by chrisss
16:56:  A new version of Snes9x for DOS has been released! Heres whats new:

  • 1.15
  • - TeleKawaru has joined myself in Maintaining the Dos Port
  • - Fixed a bug in config file support where the keyboard wouldn't work sometimes
  • - Fixed other bugs in config file support
  • - FPS Counter added to Dos Port. (not the same as Gary's) Use alt-F1 to activate.
  • - Config file automatically re-creates itself if it's not there now
  • - Message Display added. (Looks really neat) Works only in 16-bit modes
  • - Freeze-file re-added again. (now it uses 3 keys instead of 20) Use F2 to save, F3 to change save-slot, and F4 to load.
  • - Config file support almost complete
  • - Added Surround sound effect. Thanks go out to Kreed who wrote the code.
  • - Did some modifying of the save screen-shot code. It now works on american keyboards, and saves in the same directory as snes9x.exe (use the Print Scrn Key to activate)
  • - Fast-forward/Normal keys redone. Now it uses only one key.
  • - Fixed a bug in config file load/saving. Now it doesn't crash in certain situations.
  • - Tweaked ADSR a bit. (using OpenSPC's source as a guide) I left both versions of it. -> At the last minute I found a bug so it will not be included in this version.
  • 1.14
  • - Implemented the Tales of Phantasia memory map using the information supplied by zsKnight. Had to also implement a de-interleave routine to work around a ROM feature and Snes9x CPU instruction fetching implementation detail.
  • - Added a frames-per-second on-screen display option.
  • - Fixed the final glitch bug with the Mario Kart track display - the byte code for the termination of the DSP1 raster command wasn't been recognised.
  • - Disabled a NMI/DMA hack for Rise of the Robots, was causing problems for Mario Kart and 'Robots wasn't working correctly anyway.
  • - Optimised the mode 7 rendering a little.
  • - Changed tile rendering code to use offsets into screen buffer rather than direct pointers ready for z-buffer implementation.
  • 1.13
  • - Changed V-blank NMI to occur immediately after a WAI instruction, Toy Story required this.
  • - Fixed reading of H-DMA line counter register, Top Gear 3000 needed this.
  • - Ripped off large parts of ZSNES's DSP1 code (with _Demo_'s and zsKnight's approval). Now Mario Kart works almost 100%.
  • - Added a check to see if a vertical scanline IRQ register change will cause a H-IRQ later on the current scanline. Pilot Wings needed this.
  • - Fixed possible crash bug in clip window code when both windows had two spans. Could actually cause Chrono Trigger to crash the emulator.
  • - Fixed a lock-up problem with the C Super FX code, Star Fox and executing a few 'FX instructions per scan-line (required for Winter Gold).

You can download Snes9x from the Snes emulator page.

Misc. News: IDSA releases statement regarding emulation news by zophar
01:27:  The IDSA, which is an organization responsible for the shutting down of many ROM sites, as well as other forms of piracy, has issued a statement on the recent shutdown of Dave's Classics while all ROMs were removed. You are all urged to read this; it's very interesting reading. Alas, it seems as though they have no intention of changing their current path of the destruction of every single ROMs site that they can get their hands on.

Site News: I'm back... sort of news by zophar
01:22:  Well, it's been a REALLY crappy week for me; only good thing that happened was the 4 corners dark match at the Sunday Night Heat tapings last week. Something happened to my computer. I still don't know the actual cause, and I even have doubts as to whether it's the CPU that fried, or if the whole motherboard just died.

In any case, I'm not on my own computer right now, a friend lent me his for the time being. A new motherboard and CPU is on the way, HUGE thanks to Rob for this; until then, I'll be trying to do a few updates here and there as best I can on my friend's computer.

I realize ZD hasn't been updated as much as it usually is; it seems that if I vanish, so does all sense of order. Thank you for your continued support of ZD, and hopefully, within a few days, things can resume some sort of normalcy.

  • You no longer need to type in the .bin extension for ROM filenames. z26 is now a little bit configurable. If you type z26 followed by some command line switches, but you don't include a filename, z26 will remember the command line switches as defaults. These defaults can still be overridden with a command line that includes a filename.

  • The help screen that you get by typing z26 alone on a command line now has multiple pages. It comes up in graphics mode too. Thanks to Chris Pile for the line drawing code.

  • A rare bug that occasionally caused graphics to be messed up at startup may have been fixed.

  • If you would like to download z26, or the z26 source code, go to the Atari 2600 emulator page.
