04:32:  Along with many of the projects currently being worked on for ZD, another one is near complete.

A lot of you have emailed us or used our news submitter to ask a question about an emulator, or about emulation in general. Soon, we'll unveil a help center for the newbie and for those who just need something answered.

What we lack right now is a "tech support staff". We're looking for a few people who are knowledgable and willing to share the wealth with those needing some help. Basically, you'll answer emails from our viewers who need something answered, and be expected to research and find answers if you don't know about it. Some of the qualities you need to posess are:

If you qualify, email me your resume, and be sure to include your contact info (name, address, phone), as well as a writing sample (if you have one). There are approximately 5 to 10 positions available, depending on the popularity of the help center once it opens. This is NOT a paid position, although compensation may be explored in the future, especially for hard working individuals (hey, we know good help is hard to find).

17:57:  The port of MAME to the IPaq Pocket PC, iMAME, may able to only use one button press at a time, but that hasn't stopped development of this MAME port. Bits of the source from MAME 0.21 and 0.36 have been compiled to run such games as Ms. Pac-Man, Galaga, Space Invaders, Frogger, and Burger Time. Here's the full list of what's new in this release:

  • I'd like to say I've finished, but Nicola is too fast as always! ;) So thanks to Nicola we have GALAGA!! And very special thanks to Martin Scragg that provided us crucial information on custon I/O chips.
  • Thanks to Dark Schneider (DS wanted to be anonymous, so I'll call him this way) that provided 6809 support and the first driver working on this CPU: Super Pac Man. The driver is based on the super-detailed KEG file of Replay emulator by Kevin Brisley (kevin@isgtec.com). Thanks to everyone.
  • Ville Laitinen provided a driver for Kangaroo, based on the Arabian hardware. I'v also adjusted the number of frames per second to 60 to the two drivers. Sync with sound should be better, though.
  • Thank to Virtu-Al (Alan J McCormick (gonzothegreat@JUNO.COM)) Amidar and Turtles now have 100% correct colors.
  • Arabian has correct colors now.
  • Fixed a bug in all games with starbackground: using a frameskip > 0 introduced slowdowns. Now the speed remains unchanged.
  • Fixed tempo speed in 1942. It was playing at half speed. Should be correct now. Also fixed a bug in noise volume of PSG. Noise was playing at half volume.
  • Added support for Donkey Kong japanese version
  • Minor adjustment to Space Invaders color strips
  • Mad Planets doesn't crash anymore with the new samples (shorter!)
  • Added colors to Warp Warp. Thanks again Chris.
  • Fixed Dipswitch in Elevator Action. YOU'LL HAVE TO DELETE THE PREVIOUS DSW FILE IN "ELEVATOB" DIRECTORY IN ORDER TO GET IT RUN CORRECTLY.

You can download it from the iMAME homepage

Translation News: Two Translations Updated news by
aardwolf
14:37:  Kryten was looking through our SNES translations, and saw a patch that had been updated. It was updated a while back, and wasn't updated here because the translation group's website changed without a forwarding URL. Luckily, Kryten found it for us, so now the two patches at the site have been updated on our page. They are Rudra's Treasure (aka Rudora no Hihou) and Live a Live. Both of these are Squaresoft games.

Thanks again to Kryten for the news. Get both patches at our SNES Translations page.

Utility Release: Super Jukebox 2.8 news by
xip
03:59:  A new version of Super Jukebox, a great SPC player for Windows, has been released, and here's what's new:

  • Fixed a nasty little memory leak in the visualization routine that caused Windows resources to be depleted rather quickly and then crashing Windows. I am truly sorry for all the people who were affected by this, but the last version I released in a rush.
  • Added an option to the Configuration dialog box to remove the title bar from the main window.
  • Changed the code to update the visualization in a separate thread instead of from the timer message handler.
  • Added a frequency spectrum analyzer as an alternative to the visualization. Special thanks to Murphy McCauley for his Fast Fourier Transform DLL.
  • Added the ability to adjust the update rate for the visualization.
  • Added the ability to adjust the priority for the visualization thread.
  • Added context sensitive help to the playlist and song properties dialog boxes.
  • Changed the oscilloscope renderer so that the wave is now being scaled to fit the window, instead of the window being scaled to fit the wave. This gives it a cleaner look.
  • Updated the documentation for SNESAmp.DLL from text to HTML

Emulator News: A New MSX Machine? news by
stickfig
02:21:  Yes, folks, you heard me right. A brand new MSX machine has been confirmed, and it will be made by ASCII. SLotman of The MSX Files sent us info on it, and here's what he had to tell us:

Great news from Japan! ASCII and Sega are working together to develop an new MSX Machine. It's a 3 part project:

First they will create (and it's almost done) a new MSX emulator that will support MSX, MSX2 and MSX2+. This emulator will be available in English, Spanish and Portuguese.

After that, they will start selling MSX software on a new server, INCLUDING NEW SOFTWARE (Konami and Namco already contacted for this).

Then they will produce the new MSX which will be a Z80 processor running at 100 or 120Mhz with 4MB Ram and 4MB VRAM.

For a more in-depth message about this, head on over to The MSX Files and check it out.

Thanks again to SLotman for the news.

Site News: The Scribe Gets the Last Word In.. news by
stickfig
01:45:  If it weren't for The Scribe, the Articles page would be a complete joke. If it wasn't for him, some of the most impressive insight about emulation might have never been made.

Unfortunately, The Scribe has left emulation. His words, like cracks in amber, are all that remain. His old e-mail address is long gone, but he left us with a few parting thoughts, which I'll allow you to read here.

If anyone is interested in writing more articles for the page, read the submission guidelines posted on the Articles page and then give me a holler. The articles page has admittedly been stillborn since I picked it up, but now I'd really like to revive it.

Thanks again to The Scribe for all of his excellent insights over the past couple of years, first on his own page and later on, ours.

Media News: Sony Exec Gets Tough on Napster news by
stickfig
01:17:  Shade Eagle (you know, that guy who used to work on ZD) recently sent us news about an article posted at U-Wire Today dealing with a speech given by a Sony exectutive. The article gets interesting after the exec starts talking about Napster. Here's a quote from said article:

"Sony is going to take aggressive steps to stop this. We will develop technology that transcends the individual user. We will firewall Napster at source -- we will block it at your cable company, we will block it at your phone company, we will block it at your [Internet-service provider]. We will firewall it at your PC. These strategies are being aggressively pursued because there is simply too much at stake."
    - Steve Heckler, Sony Executive

Aside from forgetting about the whole 4th amendment, this type of policy, if anything, must be a catalyst for conversation. So, I figure that I'll let you guys look at the full article and place your opinions about it on our Talk of the Town message board.

Anyway, thanks again to Shade Eagle for the news.

Emulator News: gleam! News news by
stickfig
00:44:  For those of you interested by the bit of news I had about the NES emulator gleam! the other day, I have some more interesting news. From the gleam! website:

Alright! After about 10 minutes of sweat-dwelling hard work, I got my first ROM to load off of a CD-ROM in the dreamcast! (Yes, pop in the emulator CD, take it out and pop in the ROM cd, load a rom, boom) .. It's cool :) .. So from now on I don't have to have the precompiled-into-the-source-code roms anymore.. Oh, ya, so all you folks out there can start burning rom cds to use with this emulator, you will need to make sure it burns in a MODE1/2352 track, or using the -xa1 option in cdrecord for you linux people. Thanks everyone for your support!

The page also features screenshots of the emu running off a TV Tuner card.

Nevarre, who sent us news about this emu, is really pushing at us to put up a Dreamcast emulators section. Just so he knows I'm not ignoring his feelings about it, I'd like anyone interested in it to give us some input on it. If we get enough positive feedback about it, who knows? It's always an idea.

Thanks again to Nevarre for the news.

Emulator Release: Z26 1.38 news by
xip
17:34:  A new version of Z26, an Atari 2600 emulator for DOS, has been released, and here's what's new:

  • Paddle games can now be played with a mouse or a PC trackball.
  • Trackball emulation which allows joystick games to be played with a mouse or PC trackball.
  • Lightgun support via the mouse or PC trackball (Sentinel, Shooting Gallery).
  • Some mouse support in the GUI. You can point and click to launch a game.
  • Canyon Bomber and Backgammon are now treated as paddle games.
  • Support for Megaboy cart.
  • Support for overriding the bankswitching scheme for ROM images that z26 doesn't support automatically. Use the -g command line switch.
  • There are some new features of particular interest to game developers including a scanline counter (-n) and the ability to emulate the PAL color changes (-o) which occur when a PAL game has the wrong number of scanlines.
  • We also made some changes to, and added documentation for trace mode which can help developers debug their games.
  • Special thanks to Eckhard Stolberg. He wrote much of the code in this release. But he also shamed me into doing some of the work too. ;-)

Get it at the Atari 2600 page. Thanks to cloud_spear for the news.

Emulator Release: Snes9X 1.31 for Windows news by
xip
17:28:  A new version of Snes9X has been released, and here's what's new:

  • Snes9x DirectSound code modified - the mixing block size is now always 10ms for Windows 95/98/2000 and 20ms for NT 4.x, now there should be no need to enable Sync Sound when a large sound buffer is required (helps emulation speed). The maximum sound buffer length values have been updated to reflect the smaller mixing block size.
  • Changed the DirectSound code back to use an offset from the play position as the place to write new sample data into the sound buffer - on NT 4.x the write position seems to vary randomly rather than being a fixed distance infront of the play postion as documented. Now I know why I used the play position originally!
  • Changed the DirectSound code to fill the sound buffer at the write position supplied by DirectSound, rather than just before the current play position - should help reduce latency.
  • Added an auto-detect method for interleaved mode 2 Super FX ROM images - well, not really auto-detect: if the game crashes and its a Super FX game, Snes9x assumes its in interleaved mode 2, demangles the ROM image and tries to run the game again.
  • Had to update the Snes9x Windows registry version number as the additional diagonal settings make old registery settings incompatible.
  • Added diagonal keyboard controls to the Windows port, as requested by several users.
  • Changed PPU code to return zero when reading non-existent registers - the game Equinox relies on this due to an original game coding bug.
  • Included FMOD sound driver support to Windows port - people experiencing broken sound or delayed sound, etc, might want to give it a try.
  • Tales of Phantasia - un-interleaved format ROM memory map changes to match odd ZSNES format, now the hacked ROM works.
  • Changed NMI again. Made reading or writing to PPU register 0x4210 clear NMI pending flag again, without this Super Tennis does not work.
  • Changed NMI timing back to be the same as several versions ago and just special cased Cacoma Knight instead - although kept the code to prevent the re-triggering of an NNI more than once in the same frame.

Get it at the SNES page. Thanks to Dave for the news.

Emulator Release: NES Emulator for the Dreamcast news by
stickfig
23:51:  Nevarre sent us a piece of somewhat big news today, dealing with the release of a NES emulator for the Dreamcast called gleam!. Currently, it only works with a single demo which is coded into the binary.

The emulator, as well as instructions on how to get the emulator burned onto a CD that the Dreamcast can read, can be found on the home page. We currently don't have a section for emulators for the Dreamcast, but if there's a great demand for one, we might consider it.

Thanks again to Nevarre for the news.

Emulator News: More on VGBC news by
xip
20:15:  A few days ago VGBC, a Gameboy Color emulator, was discontinued. However, the REASON it was discontinued has been misunderstood by many people.

"There may have been a slight misunderstanding about yesterday's news item. The emulator name issue is true, but it is not the reason the project is not being developed anymore. I have too many projects going on right now to work on them all at the same time, so some had to be dropped. Thus, development of the Gameboy emulator will be, at least temporarily, suspended. The project still may continue at a later late (probably on sourceforge.net), and at that time it will be given a new name."

Thanks to Markus Lindström for the news.

As such, it's primarily intended as a resource for MAME developers and for dumpers, though anyone's welcome to use it.

    Utility Release: uCON64 V. 1.9.2 news by
stickfig
18:17:  In more "Stick_Fig is doing Unix updates? Has the world tipped on its side?" news, I introduce uCON64 for Linux/Unix.

uCON64 is a nice little utility that improves on the original uCON by leaps and bounds. For an example of stuff it has that the original doesn't, here's what you'll find as new in the latest version, V. 1.9.2:

  • started to add missing Sega System16(A/B)/System 18/dual 68000 support
  • -xv64 shows now the filename on the Doctor instead of "UCON64" (sorry)
  • removed -xmp3 option for Songboy (latest informations say that it will be a USB device with copyprotected MPE standard instead of MP3.. HAHAHAHA!!!) (TODO: -xmp3 send MP3 file(s) to SongBoy (MP3 player for Gameboy))
  • removed options which were added by mistake (like parallel transfer for Z64)
  • added -ispad (looks for repeating bytes at the end of a probably padded ROM)
  • added -rn (some people might find it useful)
  • added -mg, -bin and 'show ROM' support for PC-Engine
  • added -usms for Jos Kwanten's ultraSMS an Sega Master System/GameGear Emulator for the Nintendo 64
  • fixed aps (GRRNNNNN!!!)
  • added an universal frontend (in java) for all platforms and all programs that need a filename
  • added CD32, CD-i and Real 3DO support
  • added -bin and -ffe option for Sega Master System/GameGear
  • added database for NES roms (that enlarged the ucon64 executable by 190kb grnnn...) "You gotta do what you gotta do." (Futurama)
  • added -db and -dbv database commands... now everyone can check if the
  • uCON64 version he uses has new database extires for a console system

Anyway, go check it out at the General Utilities for Unix page.

Thanks to Dirk for the news.

Yes, MAME has made some inroads, but it's just not going to be great until the gaming mags start saying 'You know, those chaps on Zophar's Domain and Dave's Video Games Classics were right' and start supporting it.
    - Ernie Smith (a.k.a. Stick_Fig), EmuRealm Interview

Utility Release: Super Jukebox updated to v2.7 news by
virt
12:55:  From the "a couple days tardy, but worth it" department:

Marius Fodor, now officially dubbed 'Super Duper Grandmasta Daddy of SPC players,' has been working hard to stay with the times. And now in this latest version come a much cleaner interface, and .....visualization. Yes! Squiggly lines that dance to the music! As much as I dislike generic, gimmicky vis plugins, I can't put into words how neat it is to watch Earthbound's soundtrack with this. There're other new features as well, and they're detailed at the SJ page. The download's either there, or in our own SPC Players page.

Get this program now, unless y'all got no love fo' Supah. You down with SPC? Yeah, you know me.

That said, this news post is to let you know there's some third-party action going on; RPGer is hard at work on a 3D version of the game. I'm not sure if it's yet Officially Official Hamster Endorsed, but it sounds quite cool. Keep on the lookout for this version at either RPGer's Page or the O.H.R.R.P.G.C.E. page.

This year, it's more of the same. Two more rare, unreleased ROMs have fallen into CGE's lap:

  • Atari 2600 and 5200 versions of Tempest
  • Atari 5200 version of Asteroids

These ROMs are official releases, but can only be downloaded from the CGE website, and in particular the ROM Releases page.

Thanks a bunch to Joshua Mallory for the news.

Progress is coming along, however, it is being slowed due to the constant creation of CDR "coasters". The author is working on modding his Dreamcast to read CDRWs (which is possible).

For now, you can check out the info he has thusfar at the Sintendo website.

Emulator News: Emulator formerly known as Vegas news news by
bdlou
22:57:  The following comes from Tim Meekins Home Page:

OK. I meant to have made a new release by now, but I was a bit burnt out and wanted a few days away from my computer, then things got hectic at work. Ugh! Anyways, I just spent about 10 minutes today and two more Genesis games work! (Andre Agassi Tennis and the black screen bug in Batman & Robin)

By now, you've probably noticed something fishy on the web site.. Anyways, the name Vegas is a tradename of Sonic Foundry so I'm looking for a new name. Please e-mail me your suggestions. I'd like to release the next version of "the emulator" this weekend and I'll need to decide on a new name before then.

Oh, if you haven't noticed, I've removed the downloads until the next release. If you're desparate and can't wait for the next release, I'm sure there are some emulations sites around with the old version, though to keep the lawyers at bay, I would suggest any web site take down the emulator, though it should be ok to keep it around until the new version is released in several days.

If you have any suggestions for a new name for the former Vegas, please head to Tim Meekins Home Page and let him know.

Emulator Release: AGES 0.21c news by
xip
19:15:  A new version of AGES, a Sega Genesis/32X emulator for Windows, has been released, and here's what's new:

  • Massaged GFX renderer: 16.5% speed-up for 32X emulation, 44% speed-up for Genesis emulation.
  • HUGE compatability boost for Genesis games, fixed some problems in 32X games: Afterburner 32X looks much better, MK2 now works, etc...
  • Sega Mouse and Sega 4 player peripherals now emulated, though the mouse is still unusable.
  • Fixed bankswitching. (Guess its not just for 32X eh?)
  • Completed BIOS faking, no ROMs required anymore. (NOTE: Never use this unless you are trapped in the desert with no Internet connection.)

Get it at the Genesis page. Thanks to POSCOM for the news.

Misc. News: GameBoy Advance screenshots news by

16:39:  It seems there have been some screenshots of Nintendo's new Game Boy Advance handheld system released. The screenshots are of Mario Kart Advance, MegaMan EXE, and two other games, and let me tell you, I can't wait until this system hits the US markets. While there are obviously much higher quality gaming systems available, I have NEVER seen anything like this on a handheld system.

Check out the screenshots at pocket.ign and as soon as you pick your jaw up off the floor, come talk about them on the message boards.

Thanks to Gangis for pointing these out to me.

Utility Release: Mario Improvement 3 V. 0.95 news by
stickfig
01:52:  A new version of the SMB3 level editor, Mario Improvement 3 V. 0.95, has been released. Here's what you'll find in the new version (here's to the author for a very-in-depth what's new):

  • Internal support for all of the Mario Allstars levels, including the map screens. However, you still can't edit map screen pointers or level headers in Mario Allstars yet, and a few other things that work in the NES version won't work with Mario Allstars yet. Thanks to MarioExpert for providing the Mario Allstars offsets!

  • Internal support for the pipe and hammer bros. levels in the NES version only. (There are selections available in the level selector box for these levels in Allstars mode as well, but loading them will just give you garbage.)

  • Internal support for some "lost levels" in the NES SMB3 ROM. Thanks to MarioExpert for finding these.

  • Freeform Mode. This mode lets you create a cutsom Mario 3 level from scratch, with any object set, and as many 3 and 4-byte objects and enemies as you want (limited only by ROM pointer space), and you can add and delete objects as well. See below for more information on this special editing mode. This mode only works with the NES version. You cannot create map screens with this mode, only levels.

  • M3L file saving. M3L files are standalone Mario 3 level files. You can rip levels from the NES version of the game by saving them to M3L, and you can also save levels made using Freeform Mode to this format before saving them into the ROM. This feature could also be used to back up old versions of levels, in case you screw one of the levels in the ROM up or something. You cannot save map screens to M3L, only levels.

  • Map screen sprite support. Now you can edit where the hammer bros., piranha plants, boats, ships, and stuff like that are on the map screen. Works in the NES version only.

  • Changed a few things in Object Sets 2 (Hilly) and E (Underground) to make levels with these object sets load correctly in Mario Allstars.

  • Added an "Edit This Level" button to the pointer dialogs, for quick editing of levels pointed to from the map screens or the level headers.

  • Vertically oriented levels now display correctly in the editor (in the NES version only). This is based on what is selected in the "Scrolling" box for the level, so if you have one of the "Upward Scrolling" selections selected, it will automatically display the level vertically.

  • You can move the cursor below vertical location 1B now, because in some levels (even horizontally oriented ones) enemies are down there (for whatever reason). You can't move regular 3 or 4-byte objects down below there though (unless it's a vertically oriented level).

  • Added indicators on the status display for how many 3 and 4-byte objects and enemies are in the level you're currently editing, and how many bytes the level is. Mainly intended for Freeform Mode but also works when editing normal ROM levels.

  • The source code to MI3 has been released. It will likely remain open source from now on. I don't have as much time to work on MI3 as I used to, so if you want to add some new features or something, now you can. Just beware: some sections of the source code (especially the tile drawing and control code) are *very* messy, due to the fact that this was the first practical program that I ever wrote. The license terms for the source code are this:

You may use, modify, redistribute, and generally hack it about in any way you like, as long as you give me credit for the original MI3 source code. I'd also appreciate it if you send me any major changes or improvements you make, but you are not required to do this. If your changes or improvements are included in a future version of MI3, I will give you credit for them.

Also, Johnathan Wilson (the author of MI3) mentions that he's getting some help from marioexpert and that a new version will be coming soon.

You can get the program (and source) at the Facelift Utilities page.

Site News: Public Statement Regarding Swapoo news by
swampgas
07:51:  Simply put, Swapoo is no longer hosted at ZD.

After receiving a lot of email regarding Swapoo, we've decided to yank their hosting. Ironically, the day we were going to pull their hosting, they moved to their own domain with "a corporate sponsor".

Why were we going to terminate their hosting? Easy. Swapoo gave the emulation community something we never had before, so we gave them publicity (Slashdot getting their news from us, and everyone else finding out from Slashdot), and then they sold us out by pulling support for ROM images. Now Swapoo has become a cheap imitation of Gnutella. We were going to stand by Swapoo and defend them against Sega, but instead he runs away with his tail between his legs. (Why Sega has this need to be big and bad is beyond me...Sega systems, including Dreamcast, are among the least traded)

So to Swapoo....away with you. You sold us out. Now you'll have to deal with EVERY company wanting to put you out of business. You're welcome for the publicity.

04:43:  uzplayer recently sent us info about a new review on his site, Gamers Ulplink.

This latest review takes a look at Omikron: Nomad Soul for the Sega Dreamcast, with the article written by Dreamcaster. Here's an excerpt:

"Dreaming of a massive world with people flooding the streets, cars driving by, and enough places to explore to make your head spin? Well not exactly Shenmue, Omicron: Nomad Soul gives you this experience. It will make you
feel as if your in a different place, a place called Omikron. From the very beginning of the game you get pulled into the deep story line, and start to wonder why your a police man or even if you are one. There are many turns
along the way and different outcomes depending if you decide to do things the easy way or the hard way."

04:21:  Emu Italia an Italian emulation site (duh) recently took the opportunity to interview the author of the HU-GO! emulator for Win9x.

Basically, as opposed to telling you exactly what is said, I'm going to start taking a singluar quote from each and every interview I post, starting now (hint to fellow emu sites -- send me some interviews):

"I'd like to see a more passionated scene, with more involvement in creation and such instead of pure playing... Just an utopian dream ^^"

Site News: Poll Upate -- New Sections? news by
stickfig
02:05:  That's right. Children of all ages, you get to have fun with yet another thought-provoking ZD poll. Here's what you voted on last time around:

What would you think if ZD got a name change?
    1.) 997 12% That's not a bad idea.
    2.) 4566 57% Please -- no name change.
3.) 2327 29% I don't care. Call yourself "Emulation Sucks" if you want.
    Total Votes: 7890

The people have spoken, and the name change idea is completely out of the systems of ZD staffers and readers alike.

Anyway, here's the question for the new poll:
What new sections would you like to see on ZD?

Most of the suggestions were completely thought up by ourselves, but one was suggested by a very pushy Amiga fan who was completely ticked off that we didn't have an Amiga emu section. If you want, you could always make him happy. ;)

Anyway, you can either vote on the sidebar above, or if you're on the ZD News-Only page, you can place your vote here.

09:05:  Chris wrote in to let us know that his site, Retrobase, is looking for a bunch of crazy ROM zealots. And that's a good thing, and for a dizzying task; They're aspiring to compile a complete list of ALL Super Nintendo games in existence. That's right, every one of them.

They're calling it the 'suicide project' and looking for 5 to 10 dedicated (read: insane) people to assemble info, screenshots, and other vitals about every game ever released. If you think you have what it takes (in his own words, "we won't accept lamers") then mail chris@retrobase.com and he'll give all the details.

Misc. News: A New Z80 Synthesizable Core news by
stickfig
22:57:  James Pratt recently sent us this information about a product his company (Cyber Labo Ltd. Japan) been working on:

    Hiya,

I thought I would drop you a line to tell you about our companies Z80 synthesisable core. We call it the VLP80, it is a pipelined design with a pre-fetch buffer for opcodes / operands. Most instructions execute in just one clock cycle. It is the most advanced Z80 core available.

We feel that there is still a lot of milage in the Z80. People have experience of using it and their are many software tools about that support software developement for it. Our processor builds on the Z80 tradition. We estimate it to be between 15 and 20 times faster than the original Z80 when clocked at the same speed.

If you're a Z80 freak and interested in the VLP80, check out their home page.

Technical Docs News: Xbox Development Kit Documentation Released news by
stickfig
18:08:  Bill's going to love this. The guys at Xbox365 recently released a bombshell of sorts. They got their hands on an Xbox Developer's Kit (XDK), and released a document giving away much of the console's info.

Here's some of the good stuff:

  • No, Xbox games will not run in Windows 2000.
  • The Windows GUI will be replaced with either the Xbox Dashboard, or the game's pre-configured GUI.
  • The system can't read CD-Rs, but can read CDs, CD-RWs, DVDs, or DVD-Rs. Can we say "Underground Development Community"?
  • An ethernet connection will be standard (for DSL, Cable, and LAN connections), but a 56k modem is optional.
  • A parental control option is included. How this will be used is not said. (Will your mom be able to block you from playing "M" games?)
  • The Xbox supports WAV, MIDI, DirectSound, and WMA, but not MP3. Hmm...
  • Full USB support. It'll be nice to hook up my Microsoft Natural Keyboard Elite to my Microsoft Xbox instead of having to buy a proprietary piece of machinery to do the job.

Anyway, if it interests you, check out the Xbox System Software Overview. It's very interesting.

Thanks to UtahSaint for the news.

15:46:  _Blues_ and SirKero (authors of "Super Mario Bros. DX" and "Happy Mario", respectively) are looking for a new member to help them with music. In the words of _Blues_:

We need the help of someone who is good at working with NES music. Applicants must have a high tolerance for strange requests and bad anime theme songs. Applicants should also be able to squish reasonable representations of said theme songs into small NES games such as SMB1. Our musical assistant, once accepted, will be paid absolutely nothing, and will have the honor of being disgraced by having his or her name next to ours in the credits of whatever hack it is we're working on. Misc. News: New file sharing programs not so good afterall? news by
swampgas
15:13:  Ok, first off, this is MY opinion...not ZD, not anyone elses. It affects almost everyone, so I figured I'd give a public service announcement.

I recently tried a new MP3 file sharing program called SongSpy (url not given because of the hatred I have for it and you shouldn't even bother looking at it). At first, I saw an awesome gui, a nice system of sharing, etc.

But it searches your entire harddrive(s) and forcably sends all your MP3 info to the server. That takes about 3 minutes for me.

So a few days later, I played an MP3 and looked at the ID3 tag to find an advertisement of SongSpy. Lo and behold, EVERY single MP3 on my entire system had the ID3 tag replaced with an advertisement for SongSpy.

Since I have upward of 14 gigabytes of music on disk, it ruined nearly all my MP3 files (most are from official releases, which are CRC checked).

So from my experience, I say beware of new file sharing programs. Napster and Swapoo are excellent. I'd never use anything different ever again.

If anyone has the ID3 tag info for MP3s...like the byte offsets and the length, please email me them so I can write a small util to wipe out my tags and rid me of this horrible invasion of my privacy. I don't believe that's documented...if it isn't, perhaps I could sue for compensation for advertising? :)

As always, go ahead and post your comments/stories on the message board.

"You have entered the Killer Instinct 3 Petition section. The purpose of this is to convince Rare, Nintendo and Midway to make a better killer instinct and include YOUR suggestions, ideas and possible additions. Some of the things you may post are possible new modes (tag mode maybe?), new type of combos, new fatalities, bring back old characters (How about Ultratech makes cyber riptor from remaining riptor cells plus cyber technology like fulgore!), add new characters (How about a character with demonic head with horns and one eye, large claw hands like sabrewulf horns on his back in red colour and he glows like cinder. His name could be demonico), new stages, new story, new music and more (It's all up to you!). We simply ask of you to post your name, e-mail, webpage, and message. You decide if you want your real name, e-mail and webpage posted. You can also post comments on other people's posts. Emulator News: Old-School Web Browsers news by
stickfig
03:14:  Anyone want to check out what it felt like to use a web browser back before the days of tables, frames, and backgrounds? Well, meta:metrix has recently put up a cool site (called Deja Vu) that shows what these sort of pages looked like in prehistoric browsers. From the older-than-dirt (a Cern line-mode browser) to the mere old (Internet Explorer 2.0), this site (found at www.dejavu.org) shows it all in its early glory. While not true emulation in the sense that we think of it, it's interesting nonetheless.

It must be said that it feels nice to look back. :D

Behold the power of ketchup. During a scientific experiment in the office today (read - boredom at work), we took a non-working Mario Land cart and dunked it in ketchup (see pic at http://www.wilwa.net/tempimages/GBCart.jpg). After a few minutes in the ketchup, we pulled it out and cleaned it off. Sure enough, the cart booted right up! Consider this a handy cleaning tip for all your older GB carts.

Someone explain to me how this worked. :D Oh, and thanks again to LordBug for wasting his time to send us that.

    15:20:  Yo!

Things are coming along very well as relates to the upcoming "ZD Next-Generation" project, which will make navigating ZD much easier. Not only will it make things easier for all of you, but things should move much swifter and in a better way behind-the-scenes. Myself and Sam will keep everyone posted on how it's progressing and hopefully, the wait will soon be over.

I'd like to personally wish Chris Comstock the best of luck in all his future endeavors. Chris was our Free ROMs maintainer, and has decided to step down. He also attempted to revive our FAQ but things didn't quite work out. At this time, the FAQ is on hold until the new next-generation system is put online, and then we'll go from there. We'll miss you, Chris.

Site News: 'The program formerly known as RomNet' mentioned on CNet.com news by
zophar
15:08:  This has been a crazy week for the program formerly known as RomNet. It's been renamed to "Swapoo" since it was discovered that www.romnet.com currently owns the name "RomNet" and a legal battle was not desired. Besides, "Swapoo" has a nice ring to it. :) As a reminder to everyone, please don't e-mail the people at romnet.com; they have nothing to do with this program.

CNet posted an article on Swapoo yesterday (it was still known as RomNet then). Here's an excerpt from that article:

The site, called RomNet, permits participants to exchange software copied from video game cartridge chips called ROM, or read-only memory. The software extracted from ROM can then be played on personal computers using emulation software such as UltraHLE.

While sites already exist from which people can download games, RomNet offers the same sort of flea market ambience that Napster brought to MP3 music files. Instead of only being able to find games at a central server, people can browse for games located on any and all of the computers hooked into RomNet. In addition, because the files aren't stored on a central server, it becomes more difficult for developers to crack down on software pirates.

The founder of the site, 17-year-old Philadelphia programmer Jeffrey Freeman, is aware of the piracy concerns and the reaction his service might prompt from game software companies. "Sure, it is a concern that they may try to shut us down, despite the fact that we don't permit piracy, but I am confident in the law and believe we will prevail," Freeman said.

I'd personally like to wish my fellow Philadelphian resident the best of luck with Swapoo - I have a feeling it's going to become huge. :)

Remember - the new URL of Swapoo is swapoo.zophar.net so update your bookmarks. You can read the full CNet article below.

Emulator News: "My emulator isn't dead!" news by
stickfig
16:55:  We recently got a message from TRAC on the status of his Super NES emu SNEeSe. Here's a quote from the man himself:

SNEeSe is not dead... been a lot going on in my life for the last several months, but SNEeSe is NOT dead... most stability problems since 0.43 are fixed in the current (non-released) build, the CPU core has been ported to NASM (for various reasons), unfortunately there's still a stability-related bug in the DMA core that SHOULD be fixed by the end of the week... but in my search for timing accuracy, I need help... the docs I have on PAL timing are severely lacking.. if ANYONE knows the fractional equation to determine the masterclock on PAL NES/SNES or PAL TV color subcarrier clock (for example, 189e7 / 88 is NTSC SNES clock), or can tell me the frequency of the clock crystal in the PAL NES/SNES... contact me (TRAC) at the email address on the SNEeSE page, (http://sneese.n3.net/)... thank you all...

In case you want to see the direction of SNEeSe at the moment, check it out on the Super NES Emulators page. If you can help him, by all means -- e-mail him.

07:03:  Save archives updated: CS0, GS0, NeoRAGEx, NSM, STA, SRM, CHT, ZST archives.
Game music archives updated: GYM, NSF, SPC archives.

Note: the reason for my reluctance to update was in anticipation of the new save archive upload system that is currently in development, that will greatly facilitate the expedience in which I will be able to update the save and music archives. However, the new system wasn't quite ready when it was expected, but rest assured it will make its debut in the near future, and I think you will be pleased with the results. Until then, please keep your new save/music submissions until the new system is ready, then send away. Thanks for your continued support.
