Emulator Release: Snes9x v1.18d for Unix news by rouge
18:29:  New versions (are there betas anymore?) of Snes9x for Lunux libc5, Solaris (Sparc) and SunOS (Sparc). There's alot of changes since v1.16, so I put all of the changes into this text file to make it easy for everyone...

Get it on the Unix SNES page.

Emulator Release: DarcNES v19990222 for Unix news by rouge
18:09:  New version of the DarcNES NES, SMS, and PCE emulator. It's a little late, but I've been a little busy, this is basically just a bug fix version anyhow not that it's not still important though... Alright, what's new:

  • Fixed bug introduced in dn990110 involving SMS paging regs. Shinobi works again.
  • Fixed bug in m6502.c that prevented the battletoads games from working.

For now, get it on the Unix NES page.

Emulator News: NES4PC Alpha 2 news by bnu
17:57:  Yep, yep that's right. David De Regt, also known as AkIlLa^ has released a new Alpha version of his NES Emulator NES4PC. There are quite a few new things done to this version, and here's a nice list for your viewing pleasure:

  • Converted a very small portion to ASM

  • Changed CPU memory access system that runs mapper 0 games a bit slower, but almost all games with mappers are a _lot_ faster!

  • Worked on mappers 9/10 (MMC2/MMC4)

  • Added preliminary mapper 90... Still hacking this one apart...

  • Added Mid-Frame VRAM Write support

  • Changed counter for clockticks per scanline from double-longint combo to a single BYTE.

  • Converted Accumulator addressing mode instructions into new implied instructions

  • Removed all other graphics engines than scanline since the new mid-frame stuff made the other stuff completely obsolete, and they sucked anyway. It also sped it up a bit to not have the checking for which graphics mode is being used.

  • Fixed up a long-time graphics bug where everything was being drawn 8 lines too early.

  • Downloaded Microangelo 98 and made a spiffy icon for NES4PC!

  • Fun, huh? You can download it from the NES Emulators page.

Emulator Release: JAS-SYS1 1.1 news by zophar
08:45:  A new version of JAS-SYS1, a Namco System 1 emulator for DOS, has been released. Here's what's new in this Pacmania emulator:

And the moral is.... dont screw with code you know works, turns out I killed the VESA detect for Matrox cards (pretty annoying considering I've got a G200 power machine here too !)

So.. that's now fixed. As the Matrox doesnt support the 400x300 or 512x384 modes it defaults to 640x480x16bit. NOTE: These are 16bit color modes.

Ok, who honestly wants to play two player games ? Well, that got accidentally left out (ooops) so it's now back in.. '2' to start two player.

Thanks to Davesclassics.com for the news. You can download JAS-SYS1 1.1 from the Multi-Arcade emulators page.

Emulator Release: MSKISS 0.2.0 news by zophar

  • Screen 3 renderer strongly corrected/rewritten.
  • ALT+F12 now saves a 99% valid BRMSX.STA file.
  • Mega-RAM 256 KB primitive support added.
  • Optimized and corrected SEVERELLY IN/OUT functions.
  • 16x16 and 8x8 sprites (without zoom) renderer optimized.
  • Bug corrected in PSG noise channel 1 (GUS only).
  • Key '+' of the num-pad mapped.
  • Improved debugger... Well, in fact, TOTALLY REWRITTEN debugger.
  • BASIC cartridges support added... ("Ligue-se ao Expert" now works).

Thanks to RingWall for the news. You can download MSKISS 0.2.0 from the MSX emulators page.

Emulator News: Meka to be released soon news by zophar

Emulator Release: DRR-NES 0.30 news by zophar
18:21:  A new release of DRR-NES, a NES emulator coded in QBasic for DOS, is now available. A lot has changed since 0.20. Here's what's new in 0.30:

  • By rewriting the entire memory system (several times :S), the speed has been increased like 50x! (not kidding)
  • The graphics engine is super-fast now because of that (over 100 fps), but the main CPU is still really slow so the only way that you can get those speeds is to play something that only uses a little CPU time and then enters a do-nothing loop for the rest of the frame (which DRR-NES will automatically skip).
  • I finally got around to implementing some mappers (numbers 1, 2, 3, 7, 8, 11)
  • You can set a frameskip now, but it doesn't help much because the CPU is what's slowing everything down - not the graphics.
  • Most games run at 12-15 fps on my P166 with the exception of mapper #1 games that do about 1.5 fps because of constant bank switching. Demos go over 60 fps.
  • Lots of CPU bugs were fixed and plenty of commercial games work (or at least work partially) now!
  • See, QBasic isn't completely worthless after all! :)

You can download DRR-NES 0.30 from the NES emulators page.

Utility News: Intellivision page added news by nitro

Emulator Release: Snes9x 1.18d for Linux news by XiP
17:12:  A new version of Snes9x has been released for Linux(i386), Solaris(Sparc), and SunOS(Sparc). There source has not been released yet. Here's what's new:

  • Implemented a sync-sound mode where sound data gets generated in sync with SPC700 instructions being executed. Finally the sound Williams Arcade classics can be heard. Also helps slight sound timing problems in many other games but doesn't fix Mortal Kombat 2 like I thought it would - its sound routine programmers must have been on drugs or something!

  • Added interpolated sound - gives low frequency sounds much more bass similar to a real SNES especially with the playback rate ramped up to 44KHz.

  • Added on-screen messages as various emulation options are toggled on and off using the in-game keys.

  • Fixed a PPU register read bug with the sprite register write position. Thanks to Takehiro TOMINAGA for the bug report.

  • Altered the auto-frame skip timing code to only wait and re-sync to the end of frame when frames haven't been skipped. Again thanks to Takehiro.

  • Speeded up the colour addition and subtraction code using ideas from Takehiro.

  • Get it at the SNES page for Unix systems.

Emulator Release: Stella 1.1 news by zophar
15:12:  New versions of Stella, a portable Atari 2600 emulator, has been released for both DOS and Linux platforms. (The Linux version will be on ZD later today). Here's what's new in version 1.1:

Misc. News: Non-emulator related fun news by zophar
13:26:  I've noticed that a large number of emulator sites deviate from emulation every now and then...but this is Zophar's Domain. ;) Therefore, all deviations here will be weird, twisted, and insane.

I found this MP3 on IRC yesterday, and almost died laughing. I won't offer any opinion, just listen to it and form your own! However, except for a few bleeps, it leans towards an 'R' rating, so if you get easily offended by adult-oriented humour, then this is not for you. But if so... enjoy! (It's about a meg big. The format is 64kbit, 44100hz, mono. If you don't have an MP3 player, grab WinAmp).

Misc. News: More on the FCC Ruling news by zophar
13:16:  The Great George Lulu has informed me that the FCC has issued another press release which says, simply, that even though the internet is interstate in nature, the law which says that the internet is exempt from interstate charges is still in effect. You can read more about it at the link below.

  • FCC Press Release

Misc. News: Internet access declared interstate commerce. news by stick_fig
06:01:  Anyone know a good way to ruin a good thing? The FCC does. They recently decided that the net access isn't intrastate commerce because it's an ISP. It's interstate commerce because you start in one state and end up in another. What does this do? It gives phone companies the right to charge long-distance access on ISP calls. Will they do it? Only time will tell. What'll probably happen is that phone companies that own ISPs will make those ISPs more desirable by making them non-per-minute access.

Read the story and see what I mean.

This could cause huge problems if it's taken the wrong way.

Site News: Poll updated again. news by stick_fig
05:54:  Well, after sitting around on the last poll for a couple of weeks, I came up with the idea to update it for once. So I did it.

Here are the results from the last poll:

What kind of PC do you use to play emulators on?

Choice 1 was: "486-level chip or Lower (you are a GOD if you use a 386)"
It received 37 votes (5.3 percent).

Choice 2 was: "Low-end Pentium (P133 or lower)"
It received 94 votes (13.5 percent).

Choice 3 was: "High-end Pentium (P166 or higher)"
It received 176 votes (25.3 percent).

Choice 4 was: "Celeron or Pentium II"
It received 218 votes (31.3 percent).

Choice 5 was: "Low-end AMD (K5 or lower)"
It received 10 votes (1.4 percent).

Choice 6 was: "High-end AMD (K6 or higher)"
It received 112 votes (16.1 percent).

Choice 7 was: "Low-end Cyrix (6x86 or lower)"
It received 20 votes (2.9 percent).

Choice 8 was: "High End Cyrix (6x86MX/MII or higher)"
It received 19 votes (2.7 percent).

Choice 9 was: "I have a Macintosh. (Virtual Gamestation baby!@!@)"
It received 6 votes (0.9 percent).

Choice 10 was: "I'm using WebTV, or for some other reason I can't vote."
It received 5 votes (0.7 percent).

Someone also sent me the first write-in I've ever seen: a 8086, which he used to run NO$GMB. He supposedly got 1/3 fo the full speed outta it. Not bad. More power to him.

Anyway, here's what the next poll is about: Which SPC player do you use?

    Good enough question, right? :)

    Anyway, go vote.

Utility News: Hexposure 0.44b news by zophar
05:18:  Some of you may remember this hex-editing utility, coded by Kent Hanson some time ago. Recently, it's been receiving a ton of updates. Here's what's new in the just released Hexposure 0.44b:

  • Fixed an ugly bug that had crept into the relative searcher, causing it to crash if it didn't find any results! Waaahh! (This bug was only present in v0.43b.)
  • Ability to build font table based on results of a relative search. Hexposure will ask you if you want it to build the font table or not.
  • Ability to save the current font table as a .TBL file. (Useful if you've used the relative searcher to find the font values.)
  • Relative searcher sped up. It can now find a 16-byte string at the end of a 1 MB file in one second (on my Pentium 75).

You can download Hexposure 0.44b from the Translation Utilities page.

Misc. News: Sorry. news by bnu
09:03:  Sorry for the lack of updates and stuff, but last sunday+monday have been tough for me :\ I've been forced to reformat my harddrive AGAIN and my comp is still not up and running. I can't seem to find Win98 anywhere. And on top of all this the school's connection has been going up and down all week, soooo. Sorry. I'll get around to update later. But, heh. I did get a nice new web account :) I got myself some space on a brand new server called www.cola.nu. My homepage is actually here but there's not much there yet. It it a server made by a couple of Swedes, but it'll get a well deserved upgrade soon, and if you don't want GeoCities or something else you could prolly get an account there. Subdomains will be available later, too :) Enough of this, I'm going to find all the frontend updates I need to do.

Emulator Release: NES4PC 0.35 Alpha 1 news by zophar

Emulator News: Progress update on NES4PC news by zophar
03:47:  Akilla has been steadily working on improving his NES emulator for Windows, NES4PC. Here's some of the things he's been doing:

Right now, I'm working on the MMC1 code. There seems to be a problem with the code for 256k page switching, and likely some other stuff, so games like Dragon Warrior 3 and 4 don't work right now. (Of course, DW1/2 don't work either, but that's another story...) Zelda 2's overworld map is also screwed up tile-wise, just like it was before it broke, so I'm trying to find out if it's a MMC1 error or if it's something in my sprite 0 hit code or my scanline engine or what... =/

Thanks to the news-u-lator for this update. Don't forget to check out the NES4PC homepage from the link below.

Misc. News: Confirmed: Sega Smash Pack uses KGEN news by zophar
23:19:  Thanks to two people who e-mailed me, Iang and Greg, it's been confirmed that Steve Snake, author of KGen (a Genesis emulator for DOS) has indeed used his emulator in Sega's Smash Pack. In the readme for the Sega Smash Pack, you can clearly see this, near the end:

    Lead Programmer and Original Technology
    Steve Snake

Also, in the smash.cfg file, the first 4 letters are:

    KGeN

The ROMs used in the Sega Smash Pack appear to be 16 bytes more than the .BIN format (*.kvq), but they are not in any format that I've ever seen. Once again, a huge thanks to Greg and Iang for verifying this. You can check out both the readme and the cfg file below.

Misc. News: Classicgaming makes a statement news by zophar
19:26:  A few minutes ago, Fragmaster, the person who runs Classicgaming.com, has issued a statement regarding Emu News Service leaving Classicgaming.com:

James Pragit (the guy who ran EmuNews) left this site because the company that hosts ClassicGaming also owns the EmuNews domain. The domain EmuNews.com was oned by CriticalMass long before James came onboard, and before that the domain EmuNews.com was owned by The Techs Network.

In his final news posting James neglected to mention that he was an employee of CriticalMass and was paid for his services. It has been a policy of CriticalMass owns all the domains of sites it hosts, including the EmuNews domain. They own ClassicGaming.com as well. I don't have a problem with that; They continue to support this site with publicity and resources even though it isn't profitable -- CG uses an incredible amount of Bandwidth (*cough* NEO-GEO roms *cough*) and the only reason it exists is because I love classic games.

I've worked on ClassicGaming for over a year now. It may not be the best emulation \ classic gaming site out there, but I try. If it doesn't float your boat, there's other sites out there like Dave's and Zophar's.

I'm sorry that James couldn't come to an agreement with his employers, but sometimes disagreements are inevitable.

Meanwhile, ClassicGaming will still be around. Until the IDSA drags me away :)

I don't know what to say, really, except that this is a very odd situation.

Emulator Release: DarcNES v19990221 for Unix news by rouge
18:17:  New version of DarcNES, NES, SMS, PCE emulator. I missed the update before this (they were within 12 hours of each other) so, what's new since v19990214:

    19990221:

  • Added PCE fine horizontal scrolling (the starwave demo looks even better).
  • Added preliminary vertical scrolling (Double Dungeons intro looks better).
  • Moved blitters from machine code in a .c file to asm code in a .S file (don't ask).

    19990220:

  • Worked on FDS emulation all week. It still doesn't work.
  • Doubled PCE CPU speed (I still don't have the correct speed).
  • Added preliminary PCE raster counter.
  • Fixed PCE background tile address mask.
  • Added preliminary PCE course horizontal scrolling (the starwave demo from the MagicKit assembler package looks better).
  • Added size checks to sms/gg detection (now small rom files don't crash the emulator as easily).
  • Added some hooks in the NES I/O emulation (this will allow emulation of mappers that use the $4018-$7fff range).
  • Stating what should be obvious: If you want email when a new version of DarcNES is released, send email to majordomo@dridus.com with the line "subsrcribe darcnes-announce " in the body of the message.

For now, get it on the Unix NES page.

Misc. News: Problems for Classicgaming.com news by zophar
18:01:  I sat down for about 15 minutes, deciding how I should do this update. Basically, Emu News Service & the Nofrendo homepage are both moving off of CG because of some moral issues, which you can read all about at Emu News Service, which is currently back at AOL, where the site first started. Here's an excerpt:

A little less than a year ago, I moved this website from its original location on America Online to ClassicGaming.com. Without going into the nitty gritty details, it was a mixed blessing. Sometime after my move, ClassicGaming.com (which is a part of Critical Mass) registered the domain name www.emunews.com. They did so without telling me. In fact, I didn't even find out about it until much later. You can imagine my surprise when I read about it in a posting on Zophar's Domain's message board.

Time will tell what the future holds in store.

Misc. News: AZDspc mIRC script news by nitro
20:41:  Cool! Two scripts in 1 day. :)

This script allows you to use ZD-spc in mIRC, and it doesn't even have to be registered with .SPC files. You can have a list of spc's thoughout the directories. (I like that even better than my playist)
    :)

You can even have time intervals between spc playing. (every minute or so, a new spc plays)

Although it has all these things, there still isn't one to broadcast in a channel that you played so and so spc, and the other peoples script plays it for ya.

Go download it, check out the other one too.

You can download it, and ZD-spc at the ZD-spc page.

I'd also like to see it's development continued by RealityMan and Epsilon, oh well, maybe for Christmas... :)

Misc. News: Source code to UltraHLE? NOT! news by swampgas
22:32:  I've seen a TON of rumors floating around, and even had a friend email me about how IGN64 reported that the UltraHLE source had been released. Well, the circumstances were somewhat different. Here's an excerpt from their retraction:

"Yesterday IGN64 erroneously reported that the source code to the Nintendo 64 emulator UltraHLE had been released across the Internet. The fact of the matter is that the so-called source code is nothing more than a reverse-engineered decompile, which, according to programmers, is more or less useless."

Media News: Emulation Reality to boycott Nintendo news by bnu
05:29:  I received an e-mail from }-RaEJaE-{ of Emulation Reality that they are preparing to boycott Nintendo and other stuff. I can't really put this in my own words so I'll just c&p the e-mail :P

"Ladies and Gentlemen of the Emulation Community:

The time has come to show that the emulation community will fight strong against the people who will try and oppress the true spirit of emulation with lies, deceit, and brainwashing. Nintendo of America has announced its intentions to file suit against the creators of UltraHLE on the grounds that they circumvented a security chip, an accusation which Epsilon and RealityMan have said to be completely untrue.

In light of this matter, Emulation Reality (http://www.emulationzone.org/er) is attempting to organize a mass boycott of Nintendo Corp. should they pursue this lawsuit. We have a boycott section on our site, where people can sign their names in support of this boycott. If we get enough signatures, we will compile them all into a list and send them to Nintendo, in hopes that we might have an impact. Please help spread the news of this boycott; it's only made possible by the people!

Frontend News: Stuffed news news by bnu
05:22:  Ok, here's my news update for the past week. Due to the fact that most Swedes are complete dorks I haven't been able to update until now, so... I've got bad news and I've got good news. I'll start with the bad news, hehe >:)

sl98 a fairly excellent universal frontend has been discontinued due to lack of interest. But however you can still write new profiles for new emulators for it. There's a link to the homepage on the Universal frontends page.

Also, I would've added a BrSMS frontend but the comp administrator deleted it along with some other "hazardous .exe files" that I had on my user. Moron.

Now for the good stuff :) Maxim Viale has released a new version of DBOYFront, his DBOY frontend, adding support for the new versions command line options. Get it from the Gameboy frontends page.

Emulator Release: PSEmu on hiatus news by zophar
17:17:  2 weeks after Duddie announced his resignation from the PSEmu team, Kazzuya has decided it was time for him to leave as well, due to a future job he wants to take. Here's an excerpt:

I can't continue on the project but I know some programmers that are very skilled and, most importantly, knowledgeable of PlayStation hardware to whom I can pass the ball.

PSEmu needs to be around now more than ever to represent the world of consoles emulation as I know it: enjoyable technical demostration and act of respect towards the creators of the hardware and software.

15:24:  Apparently, ShadowSlayer X's Ys5 Patch is unstable. This is the email I recieved:

ShadowSlayerX's Ys5 patch can cause the game to hang at several places. If this happens you can just load the unpatched Japanese rom and play until you pass the area. I've already e-mailed him about it but haven't heard from him. Also, if you don't delete the Ys5 trans patch after it's installed and it has the same name as the rom, IMOHE, ZSNES will load it each time and truncate the Gothic Font patch.

Also, I updated some of the Percentages in the Translations section.

Misc. News: Nintendo may not sue Reality Man & Epsilon news by XiP
11:18:  After I read that Nintendo might take legal action agianst Reality Man & Epsilon, I got kinda pissed off, so I sent Nintendo this letter:

"I have a question. I heard that you are taking legal action against the makers of UltraHLE, the N64 emulator. Now we all know that you want to protect your rights, but what do you hope to accomplish by going after Reality Man and Epsilon? They have already stopped making the emulator and taken down the webpage. What more do you want?"

    Here's their reply:

    "To: XiP@aol.com

    Hello.

I don't know if we're filing suit, but if we were, I wouldn't be
able to comment on current litigation.

Emulator Release: BrSMS 1.17r news by zophar
15:50:  A week after it was released to registered users, Ricardo Bittencourt has released version 1.17r of his Sega Master System & GameGear emulator to the public. Here's what's new:

  • Added "-res 4" (512x384x15 with bilinear filtering). This is the same as ZSNES "interpolation". An MMX processor is recommended.
  • Added "-res 6" (512x384x15 with "Parrot" engine). As we say in Brazil, now you all can pay a frog. Parrot is available only for SMS and GG games. An MMX processor is strongly recommended. Thanks to Dirk "Eagle" Stevens for inspiration.
  • Added Game Gear palette raster effects (used in the water of GG "Sonic and Tails 2", and in the sky of GG "Space Harrier"). Palette raster effects only works in 15-bit color modes (interpolation or Parrot).
  • Rewrote the border engine from scratch again. Now the border is always disabled by default and "-noborder" was removed. To enable the border, use the new switch "-border". This engine has support to border raster effects (used in SMS "Choplifter").
  • Support to SG1000 backdrop color, used in SG1000 "Congo Bongo" and SG1000 "N-Sub". Thanks to Lasse Reinikainen for the ROMs.
  • Support to 40kb ROMs (SG1000 "Monaco GP").
  • Fixed a bug in 3D glasses emulation (SMS "Poseidon Wars 3D"). Thanks to the guys who made the GG compatibility list for the report.
  • Now BrSMS can detect bad dumped roms at startup. If BrSMS gives a warning after loading the rom, then download SMSFIX to fix the rom. There are LOTS of bad dumps out there, including SMS "Alex Kidd in Miracle World", SMS "Power Strike", SMS "My Hero", SMS "Zillion" and many more.

You can download BrSMS 1.17r from the Sega Master System/GameGear emulators page.

Media News: President Clinton acquited of both counts news by zophar
13:27:  The President of the United States has been acquited today of both the perjury charge, and the obstruction of justice charge. The vote was clearly partisan, as you can see from this party line vote, with only a few republicans stepping over the boundary:

    PERJURY

    Dem GOP Tot

    Guilty
    00 45 45

    Not Guilty
    45 10 55

    Total
    45 55 100

    OBSTRUCTION OF JUSTICE

    Dem GOP Total

    Guilty
    00 50 50

    Not Guilty
    45 5 50

    Total
    50 50 100

I know, it's not emulation news, but every once and a while, I feel it's good to deviate from the usual, and since this was a very important issue for all who live in the U.S., I felt it should be posted. Now that the Republicans are through with torturing the President (of course, there's always censure... sigh), the country can get back on track.

Media News: Nintendo confirms legal actions toward UltraHLE news by nitro
22:39:  Here is the news directly from FGNOnline:

N64: Beth Llewelyn, PR manager of Nintendo US,
has issued a formal statement regarding the action
the company will take over the UltraHLE emulator
issue. It appears that legal action against Reality
Man and Epsilon will be forthcoming. "Nintendo is
very disturbed that Reality Man and Epsilon have
widely distributed a product designed solely to play
infringing copies of copyrighted works developed by
Nintendo and its third-party licensees," she stated.
"We are taking several measures to further protect
and enforce our intellectual property rights which, of
course, includes the bringing of legal action.
Emulators and Roms are clearly infringing and
damage not only 'larger industry players' such as
Nintendo but hundreds of smaller companies who
invest millions of dollars and thousands of hours to
develop and program software only to have it stolen
on the Internet." Emulators of the world take note.

I say that it will be turned down. I mean, come on... whats up with this?

Emulator Release: New beta of helloGB news by zophar
21:39:  On the official helloGB homepage, the author of helloGB mentions that a new beta has been released. However, he doesn't indicate the version number, nor what's new. All that it says there is this:

If you can't run helloGB, I suggest you run with '/nodsound' option. This option is the effect which doesn't do the initialization of DirectSound. If you are not able to run with this, plz wait a little, and i am investigating the cause of error at present.

I can't run the emulator even with that option, so... you can download helloGB from the Gameboy emulators page. Thanks again to the news-u-lator.

Emulator News: More UltraHLE stuff news by zophar
14:54:  Not to be outdone by the other 5 billion websites jumping on the UltraHLE effect bandwagon, Techweb has done an article called 'Emulators Strike Back' (so creative). You can check it out at the link below. Thanks to Bur[N]er for the news.

As a side note, PLEASE, I do not want people e-mailing me dissasembled UltraHLE 'source', nor do I want to see C files which were generated by exe2c. ZD has no intention of putting up the UltraHLE source, be it some pathetic dissasembly attempt, or stolen from the authors. All it does is clutter up my mailbox. Thanks.

Misc. News: Teeth, orthodontists, and updates news by zophar
14:39:  I'll be updating ZD as much as possible, but I feel that you should all know that if I miss any updates, it's because I'm in a lot of pain right now and can't think straight. My orthodontist decided that he should just keep picking at all of my teeth to get a wire in... which caused a filling to fall out.

If any of you have ever had fillings fall out, you know that it's not fun. Add to that the fact that I have *very* sensitive teeth. Anyway, I'll be updating as much as possible. Once it's refilled, I can breathe easier.

Site News: YES, the poll is updated again. news by stick_fig
00:07:  You want a poll update? Here you go. After three weeks, you got one.

Here are the results from the last poll from the long, long past:

What do you think of Demi's new ZD logo?

Choice 1 was: "Great. Best logo that ZD's ever had."
It received 134 votes (34.9 percent).

Choice 2 was: "Good. It's all right, but I've seen better ZD logos."
It received 36 votes (9.4 percent).

Choice 3 was: "Alright. It's nothing too interesting, but it works."
It received 35 votes (9.1 percent).

Choice 4 was: "Mediocre. This logo is pretty damn close to shit."
It received 27 votes (7 percent).

Choice 5 was: "Sucks. That's all."
It received 38 votes (9.9 percent).

Choice 6 was: "It beats Lycia's. That's all I care about."
It received 22 votes (5.7 percent).

    Choice 7 was: "I want Lycia's back!!!"
It received 77 votes (20.1 percent).

    Choice 8 was: "Don't know/don't care/I don't look at images."
It received 15 votes (3.9 percent).

The people have spoken... the new logo stays (like it was going to be taken off in the first place).

Anyway, Zophar suggested this for a new poll:
What kind of PC do you use to play emulators on?

Good idea, eh? Now we get to find out by our scientific purposes (read: none whatsoever) what PC everyone uses.

I'm tired, let me sleep. You got your poll, so vote.

Emulator Release: Neo Danji 0.0 news by zophar
16:24:  Version 0.0 (have to love these version numbers) of Neo Danji, a Neo Geo emulator for DOS, has been released. This version adds back sound support, which has been missing for several months. It also appears that it supports ARJ'd ROM archives now. A big thanks to Retrogames.com for this info. You can download Neo Danji 0.0 from the Neo Geo emulators page.

Emulator Release: AMAME & PMAME 0.35 Beta 2a news by zophar
16:13:  A minor update has been issued to Rodimus's AMD/P2/486 and Pentium builds of MAME. It fixes a minor joystick problem. You can download version 0.35 Beta 2a of either of these from the MAME page.

On a side note, I felt I should put a comment here. Although I haven't tried either of these yet, I should note that on my Celeron 300a (running at 374mhz at the moment), I get slowdowns in TMNT when many enemies are on the screen. Is something wrong here? No, it's just typical speed-demon MAME. ;-)

Misc. News: Sony loses restraining order against Connectix. news by stick_fig
05:47:  Sony is now going to have to not only deal with the fact that the emulator is being sold, but also with the fact that they're probably going to lose the case against Connectix because the judge has thrown out the temporary restraining order that Sony had against Connectix. It's a big victory for emulation, but a premature one -- we gotta see where it goes from here.

ZDNet (our sister site) has an article about it, which is basically just giving Connectix press.

BTW, the poll will be updated today.

Media News: Crystal Dynamics breaks ranks with IDSA on emulation. news by stick_fig
06:31:  Now this is interesting. Could the IDSA be overusing its' power in shutting down emulation sites? Here's the quote:

Crystal Dynamics has not even been in business for 10 years and has only made games for 32-bit game systems. Crystal Dynamics does not support the IDSA and has no games old enough to have been emulated. Please take our company off the list of companies you are boycotting as we are not one of the ones making this happen. Thanks.

They've been offically taken off the IDSA Boycott Page, where this message was e-mailed to.

Now I'm happy about emulation again. :)

Emulator News: DarcNES v19990131 for Unix news by rouge
19:00:  I'll just say this to clear anything up, this is the Unix version, and the previous update by XiP was for the DOS port, alright. There are now two binaries (one for Svgalib and one for Linux/x86) and as always a source. What's new:

  • Some of the demos from the MagicKit assembler package now do graphics-type stuff.
  • I found a couple of bugs in the 6280 core that prevent the joypads from working. however, fixing them breaks the video stuff. I will hopefully have this sorted out soon, but I didn't want to delay the release much longer.
  • I am not making new binaries for this release (not much point, not enough working stuff has changed).

For now, get it on the Unix NES page.

Emulator Release: DarcNES v990131 news by XiP
18:26:  A new version of DarcNES, or rather, the source of DarcNES is out. Here's what's new since the last release:

  • Some of the demos from the MagicKit assembler package now do graphics-type stuff.

  • Fixed up some stuff in pce.c and pce_vdp.c. I may or may not have some demos running in a few days.

  • Added a new nes palette by Magnus Oman. I may be adding a way of switching palettes at runtime.

  • disabled display of current nes ppu mirroring mode.

  • expanded "address bus" to 32 bits.

  • added some instructions to the 6280 core.

  • You can download it at the NES page.

Site News: Sincere Apology news by zophar
16:27:  To everyone who visits ZD, I would like to offer a sincere apology for the events that transpired today. I was away for half of the day, and came back to find out that something bad had happened. I can't believe that one of the ZD staff would upload a program without testing it first. I haven't even spoken to this person yet, so I don't even know if it was him, or a hack...

In any case, I would NEVER upload a program without testing it first, and I sincerely apologize for whomever it was that uploaded the trojan to the Utilities page. I would also like to apologize for another staff member's post, which was more Articles material than newsworthy.

I hope you all look past this, and continue to support ZD. We will all work harder than ever to support you.

Media News: More on UltraHLE in the media news by zophar
23:27:  Well, I keep getting a ton of e-mails about UltraHLE. ZD is no longer accepting articles submissions, as we have already chosen the best 4 out of the many articles you all sent. Please don't take offense if your article wasn't selected, as we can't possibly put them all up.

Also, I will be posting my own article by the end of the week. I hope things can get back to normal soon, as there is more to emulation than N64 emulation. Heck, even NESticle didn't cause this much outcry.

Following, you will find a few links to other articles on various sites, and they're all about UltraHLE. Thanks to Erik and Jason Oliveira for these links.

Emulator News: Duddie leaves PSEmu news by zophar
13:18:  It has just been announced on the PSEmu website that Duddie is leaving the PSEmu team. He had some disturbing things to say, however. Here's his message, right from the page:

Hi all lovers of PSEmu, the stream of life flows and causes things to change. So this moment had to happen sooner or later, but it happens today. I'm leaving PSEmu and am starting a new life. Of course I'm not leaving all of you dear emulator fans, and I'm not leaving my friends. I just have to leave PSEmu due to the fact that it will collide with a future job.

Speaking of emulation, it became strange in the last days, and it turned into a flame war of rom beggers, pirates, thieves, etc. Those people can ruin everything, especially since I, as emu author, know how much work it costs. We do things for free, killing our social life, spending every free minute on exploring the meaning of one bit (which sometimes takes hundreds hours). But people dont appreciate this work, and simply dont understand this style of life.

Actually I'm addicted to emulating, but I think that reading of those lame postings on News Services will get me out soon from this. It became strange. People only want new versions, want to play games, that they never bought, and they usually send 'rude words' in emails, about their favourite game not working on the emulator. I personally have a PlayStation and I play on this. PSEmu was made only to broaden my horizon and to learn more. If it satisfied people on this planet, then I'm happy. If they are not satisfied with PSEmu, I dont care.

I wish all my friends and enemies, everything good. Just try to clean up the scene, or if you are not interested in living in clear environment, just continue this lame war, buy a bigger nuke, and blow yourself up.

With Best Regards, Duddie ex. PSEmu author

We at ZD wish him the best of luck. Victim 4 of the UltraHLE effect?

By the way, Kazzuya has announced that he is still going to continue PSEmu, and he wants everyone to cheer up, so please do :) Thanks to Matt for the news.
