Emulator News: Note on Famicom news by zophar
16:48:  The NES emulator known as Famicom has been thought to have been written by a person named 'Seil'. I've just received an e-mail which states that the author is not Seil, but taka2 and nori. I've updated the NES emulators page with the authors names, and anyone who has a page in which you list Seil as the author should make the correct change. Thanks to [Mß] for letting me know about this.

Misc. News: Another Tales Of Phantasia tracking project news by zophar
16:42:  I guess this is the latest fad. Anden e-mailed me to let me know that:

Hi. I see that someone has posted a message and announcing their "Tales of Phantasia" tracking project - and gotten their page on the list. Well, I started about two weeks ago putting up a page on my own covering all sorts of game music. And I'm even done with one of the songs from "Tales of Phantasia" plus there's a whole lot of music from "Megaman X" which I've also made. My songs are all in Impulse Tracker (IT). Therefore, it'd be nice if you also inserted a little note about my page on your message board.

Here's the "gamemusic.net" address:

http://members.tripod.co.uk/anden/

Thanks!

Emulator Release: NES4PC 0.20 news by zophar
18:11:  Akilla has released version 0.20 of his NES emulator for Windows, NES4PC. There's a *lot* new in this release, so I'll use the paraphrased newisms that Akilla included in his e-mail:

The CPU and PPU timing has been ENTIRELY rewritten, and a new tile-based rendering engine has been added (Select it from the emulation menu, the faster older screen-based graphics engine is the default). MMC1 is now completely fixed and totally working, as well as MMC3! The interface has had many additions as well, including a nesticle-ish timing window and an automatic diskdude-rom-fixer. SRAM is now fully implemented as well and is compatable with Nesticle's SRAM save files. There are many CPU and PPU bugs that have been fixed including many subtle actual 6502 bugs that needed to be un-fixed. The zapper is working somewhat too (make sure you chose the correct controller in the Tools/Options menu). For more on what's new, go
to the version info section on the homepage.

You can download NES4PC 0.20 from the NES emulators page.

  • rom compatibility has gone way up
  • z80 cpu is emulated
  • psg and ym2612 sound emulation
  • gui improvements
  • parts of the sega cd have been emulated, but no games work

You can download VGEN 0.14 from the Genesis emulators page, or the Sega CD emulators page.

  • Metal Slug 1, 2 Converters has been added. Unfortunately, these two wonderful games are not working with the previous version released on the 23rd because of bugs. So If you want to play them, you should use version 0.032.

Misc. News: Genesis Chart 1.30 Beta 2 news by zophar
19:53:  Sam Pettus, in conjunction with Eidolon, has released version 1.30 Beta 2 of the Sega Genesis Compatibility list. It's just like the SNES chart, so if you've used that, you'll easily be able to read the Genesis chart. You can download it from the Genesis emulators page.

Misc. News: MAME Article in GamePro news by zophar
19:44:  A few weeks ago, we posted that the December issue of GamePro that there was an article in it about MAME. Thanks to Scott of Scott's EmuClassics, there is now a scan of the article. Check out it at the link below. Also, if anyone is interested: in my opinion, this article doesn't really tell us anything we don't already know, except that GamePro appears totally neutral in the article.

Utility News: gym2mid 0.51 news by zophar
19:36:  A new release of gym2mid, a converter for Genecyst GYM music files, is now available. It appears we missed 0.50, so here's what's new in both:

  • This is a rather minor update. I updated and re-implemented volume levels for the FM chip. It doesn't quite match the dynamics of the original Genesis, but the channels blend together a little better now.
  • I also changed the default midi program (instrument) from 'Acoustic Grand Piano' to 'Bass + Lead'. I found that this is a more mellow patch with a greater range. It also puts greater emphasis on the pitch bending.
  • Added PSG support(!!!), made the frequency->MIDI note code more accurate, and did the usual code cleaning.

You can download gym2mid 0.51 from the Sega Utilities page.

Emulator Release: VBEmu98 0.5 news by zophar
16:04:  The world's first Virtual Boy emulator has arrived! It's called VBEmu98, and the first release is version 0.5. Although it has no sound, is black & white (instead of black & red), and is quite slow (requires a P2-300 for full speed), it can run about half of the entire (30) Virtual Boy game library.

If you can't find any ROMs, stay tuned, as later today I'll be adding a link to a site which carries all of the Virtual Boy ROMs.

You can download VBEmu98 0.5 from the Virtual Boy emulators page. Thanks to all who mailed in. On a final note, you can find the new Virtual Boy page under 'Emulators: Portable', since it doesn't really belong under HandHeld.

Misc. News: Tales of Phantasia tracking project news by zophar
15:00:  DrkEtrnl has e-mailed ZD to let us know about a project he and his friend are working on:

Hey, I'm DrkEtrnl (DET) and me and my friend Hakiru started a ToP (Tales of Phantasia) project together. Our goal is to re-track as many songs from the game as possible into .IT (Impulse Tracker files) and .XM (Fast Tracker 2 files).

Our webpage is at http://drketrnl.weyland-yutani.net and it is soon going to have a smaller "easy to remember URL", something like http://come.to/projecttop .

Well, down to the point. I am asking if it be possible for ZD to publically announce Project ToP, it would be a great honour for me and Hakiru, and it will most likely inspire us to actually finish our songs.

    Thank you!

Although the entire soundtrack, save the opening song with words, is available in SPC, there are advantages to mods, such as less CPU use, and an ability to edit the file's instruments, etc. Check it out.

Emulator News: More on Nofrendo news by zophar
13:18:  A few weeks ago, we reported on the progress of Nofrendo. The official page has been updated again:

  • Primary IDE failure destroys my hard drive. F*ck computers. The Nofrendo source code is safe, stop your quivering; I wasn't about to make that mistake again.
  • I'll no longer be issuing progress reports on this page. Too many emulation pages get all excited, thinking there's a new version out, and I end up answering the same stupid emails I did the week before.
  • That said, you can expect a new version sometime before the end of the year.
  • It's frickin' cold in here, Mr. Bigglesworth.

If you're wondering why there is a * in one of the words above, I added it there. It's because of kids who access ZD that have some kind of stupid CurseBlock and can't access it if I don't add a *. Hmph.

Emulator News: BrSMS news by zophar
13:13:  The BrSMS page has been updated with the following statement:

A lot of people have asked me what happened to BrSMS. I stopped development of BrSMS some time ago, my original plan was to finish BrMSX and then get back to BrSMS.

However, I received a lot of e-mails asking me to resume work in BrSMS. Thanks to all the feedback, I'm now coding it again. The next version will be out on the next monday (30/11/1998), ONLY FOR REGISTERED USERS. I'm still accepting registrations, please send the registration form to ricardo@lsi.usp.br.

Also, Ricardo has announced that the next version will support 4 new games because of a now emulated secret video mode.

Site News: Links Page Changes... news by swampgas
15:58:  Hey hey fellow emulatorers! As you may have noticed, the Links page is slightly out of date...

Right now, I'm in the process of doing an entire recode of the page, as well as checking EVERY single site on the page. It'll have a different look to it, as well as new information on it...hopefully it'll load faster as well.

Just as a side note, I do receive and read your emails, however I receive too many to respond to them all. In your email, be sure and include a description of the site and the maintainer of the sites' email address. It's also appreciated if you have the site's main man contact me himself, instead of having 30 people email me the same site and say "it's cool".

I project the new links page to be up and running by next week the absolute latest.

Frontend News: Big news, lele. news by bnu
07:07:  Yeah. Someone called warp17-e has been checking out the frontends. Seems as a bit of them were outdated. So did I notice, but that was last friday and it was time for me to catch the bus. However, warp17-e mailed me and told me to update. I received this mail today, along with another letter from Brad. Apparently cuz I didn't update warp17-e emailed Zophar and told him. K, so I struggle and stuff to update. But unfortunately today is slow-school-internet day and there were some frontends that I wasn't able to update. I'll do this ASAP, I promise.
Anyways. Updates have been made to the following pages:
Universal frontends page - Don't remember what, but it was something.
Arcade emulator frontends page - Arcade@home, Arcade Center, ArcadeEmu, NeoRAGEFront, NeoRAGE Frontpad, Run-It.
Gameboy emulator frontends page - VGB Express.
Nintendo emulator frontends page - fwNES Express, FWNFE.

I didn't get all necessary updates done since there were a few files that I was unable to download, but I'll fix this as soon as I can.

By the way: I'm really stressed right now and I'm late for class so disregard any spelling errors and remember that I am a Swede.

    Bleh.

Utility News: SRAMConv 0.2 news by zophar
23:13:  TCK has released version 0.2 of his SNES SRAM file converter. It allows you to convert SWC SRAM files to a format that any emulator can use. New in this version:

  • Hopefully, you now only have a 1 in a 1000 chance of messing up an important file.
  • Also made the text flash in a really annoying (?) way, just for the laugh. And because I was bored.

You can download SRAMConv 0.2 from the SNES Utilities page.

Site News: Staff wanted news by zophar
14:23:  Many people have been asking me, "Boy, I'd love to work for ZD, do you need any new staff?"

Well, at the moment, we have two positions open, and possibly a third by next week. The two positions are: Utilities pages maintainer, and Free ROM/demos pages maintainer. It is preferable that one person apply for both, but only applying for one won't necessarily exclude you from being considered.

However, to apply, you MUST meet the following requirements:

  • You must know HTML and be able to edit pages with a normal text editor.
  • You must have a LOT of free time per week (at least an hour a day) to work on ZD.
  • You must know about the position you're applying for (ie, if you don't know what uCON is, and you're applying for utilities, don't bother).

Think you meet all the requirements? Well, e-mail me and I will contact you in the order which I receive applications.

Emulator Release: vMAME 0.34b7 Release 4 news by zophar
14:14:  The fourth release of vMAME 0.34b7 is upon us. There are now 2 versions of it, a Pentium optimized version, and a standard version for all other CPUs. Here's what's new:

  • Fixed a bug where games using dirty sections weren't displaying right (in fact completely screwed up) when using vMAME style video modes
  • Fixed a bug where games wider than the screen width only display half the game when using vMAME style video modes.
  • Improved the autodetection routines (which decide whether to use vMAME routines or not) to accomodate possible video modes such as 400x600 etc.
  • Now using a Pentium optimised version of the SEAL beta compiled for me personally by the author, Carlos Hasan (Pentium version only) - many thanks Carl!

You can download vMAME 0.34b7 from the MAME page.

Utility News: Final Fantasy V Soundfont by TSSF news by zophar
06:18:  I have to admit, I probably sound extremely unprofessional right now, but here I go.

I was incredibly shocked to check my mail this morning at 4:51AM to find that one of the 21 e-mails was from TSSF! For those who do not know who TSSF is, (shame on you!), he is without a doubt the king of RPG MIDIs and MODs. (IMO anyway).

Well, he e-mailed me to let me know that he had made a soundfont for Final Fantasy V MIDIs a while ago, and seeing as how ZD has a soundfont for FF3, he wanted to know if we would add it. Of course, we did :) Or I did, anyway.

So, for you Soundblaster users out there who can load soundfonts (AWE, etc), grab it at the new Soundfonts page which I just created 17 minutes ago.

I guess we gotta work harder on the news. :)

Anyway, the question I so kindly picked out for this week was:

What is your opinion of the recent IDSA shutdowns?

Go vote, and make your opinion heard. You don't have to register, anyway.

Site News: Server change news by zophar
14:21:  Many of you haven't even noticed it, but over the last week, ZD silently changed over to a new, faster, never-goes-down server! We are now hosted on emulationworld.com, which also hosts sites such as psyke.com, emucamp.com, psemu.com, hu6280.com...the list goes on. It's on a dual T3 and OC3 connection, and, best of all, it doesn't go down every other day!

So, we should never be down again if all goes well, and things should be speedy! No more wondering why you're downloading an emulator at .1k/sec from ZD. No more e-mails asking 'Why is ZD down for the 81st time in 1 week?' All of our troubles have been solved.

If anyone has any comments/questions on the server change, e-mail me. Note that the URL is still, and always will be, http://www.zophar.net. It won't change, even if we move again, which I don't think we will :)

As a final note, we lost 6 days on the message boards because of the move, but otherwise, everything is going smoothly. Let me know if you have any problems, and be sure to visit those message boards!

Emulator Release: NES4PC 0.15 Public Beta! news by bnu
03:31:  Akilla has updated his NES emulator! This new version has a real load of new stuff, so here comes the big list:

  • Graphics: 8-Bit GRAPHICS MODE PERFECTED! Really speedy! Much faster than 16-bit and 24-bit modes!

  • CPU: Removed the 3 undocumented instructions since I don't think they belong implemented and all you get is a few more invalid opcode messages but the games still run fine since the emulator isn't set to stop on bad opcodes.

  • Memory: Memory management largely redone. Bank switching code erased and rewrote from scratch (ooh that was fun...) Now it's much more accurate, however, and mappers should work much better as well as that the emulator should GPF a lot less!
  • PPU: Fixed large background scroll bug that made it scroll 240 rows of the name tables on the y axis instead of the NTSC 224.

  • PPU: Fixed huge background scroll bug where it wasn't overflowing and starting over again at the first name table in the scroll.

  • PPU: Made Background scroll Y value set to 0 if it's more than 239. It's not correct, but it's a temporary solution until I make the PPU code wrappable for those purposes.

  • PPU: Made background color go for whole name table array instead of just the first one.

  • PPU: Large bug fixed in rendering code - Not all 224 rows were being drawn which was cutting off the lower 8 rows of some games, and specifically, the Zelda title screen demo. That now displays perfectly.

  • PPU: HUGE BUG FIXED in scrolling since name tables weren't being drawn fully so that's what was causing those blank lines in games like Thexder!

  • VRAM: A few read/write bugs fixed

  • Game Genie: Fully Implemented! 6-Letter and 8-Letter Codes!

  • Interface: Because of the new bank switching engine, the PRG/CHR debug captions are now rendered useless since it would be too long to fit on the lines provided and would be unusable for most purposes since it's so different from the actual page #s which use unique bank sizes for each mapper.

  • Interface: Added automatic frameskipping

  • Interface: HUGE BUG FIXED in name table viewer

  • Interface: Made it set up everything as soon as the emulator is run instead of when you load a game. This should make it so that it doesn't always GPF if you do anything before loading a game. =)

  • Interface: Changed controller config window to the general options window and put all configuration options in there like Game Genie codes, frameskipping options, etc...

  • Interface: GPFs a **LOT** less!

  • Mappers: Fixed a large bug in Mapper #1 (MMC1) where it wasn't resetting the MMC1 registers right.

  • Mappers: A few bugs fixed in Mapper #4 (MMC3).

  • Mappers: Mapper #15 Partially Implemented, but I need much more info on it! The info I have is VERY vague (firebug's doc)! It's disabled here because it hasn't been rewritten for the new bank switching engine yet.

  • Mappers: Removed support all mappers above #7 (Except #15) because I haven't found any ROMs to test on them yet and I didn't want to reimplement them in my new bank switching format if there was no point to it.

  • Whew. Expect a few new things among fixes for the final version of 0.15.
You can get it from the NES Emulators page.

  • Optimization of WIN displaying (20% better)
  • Boycott Benchmark improved
  • Debugger improved

Emulator Release: PCott 0.07b! news by bnu
05:25:  Gollum, the author of Boycott, the Gameboy Emulator, has made a PC Emulator. So far it's only been compiled for MS-DOS, which may seem a bit worthless, but since it's written in C/C++ it can easily be ported to other platforms in need of a decent PC Emulator. A platform that would benefit greatly from this is the Amiga, heh, since it doesn't have any PC emulator that's not shareware and costs a lot of money :)
Anyways, have a list of features and stuff:
    Features:

  • Partial (75%) Intel 80x86/80x286 CPUs emulation

  • MCGA 320x200x56 emulation

  • Keyboard emulation

  • Ports, interrupts (some)

  • VGA palette

  • COM file loading

  • Screenshot saving (BMP)

  • Joystick detection

  • Built-in debugger

  • One demo works perfectly ! (165PLASM) but maybe others too...

  • Future plans:
  • Optimization (IT SEEMS SLOW)

  • Clarify parts of code (MOD R/M)

  • Fix SNAPSHOT saving/loading

  • Finish emulation core

  • Start Intel 80x386 emulation

  • Add more interrupts (DOS, FILES)

  • Improve debugger (still not perfect)

  • Improve compatibility rate

  • Etc...

  • Oh yeah, I added a PC Emulators section too so you can go get PCott and its source code from that page.

Emulator News: More on *FAN98 emulators news by zophar
04:11:  It seems that the 4 FAN98 emulators are shareware, cost 2000 yen to register, and as a cripple, have directional controls disabled. What does this mean? It will cost somewhere around 20$ US if you want to be able to press 'up, down left or right' in any of these emulators.

What can I say, except stick with the free emulators if you're strapped for cash.

Thanks to zsKnight for this information.

Emulator News: More on GBFAN98 news by zophar
01:22:  So far, I've received one e-mail from someone shedding some light on any *FAN98 emulator. Here it is:

I cannot translate the Japanese docs, but I have been able to figure out a number of features.

First off, I am not too sure about support for anything other than your average Game Boy. It does sport seven different shade schemes and I think variable frameskip. However, the digital sound emulation is very clean, on par with SMYGBE. Even more of note, it's one of the few emulators able to run both US Pokemon carts (to date, only NO$GMB was able to do that, but I hated its sound emulation).

I have also eben able to discern some of the program's basic controls.

    CTRL-F1 Load cart
    CTRL-F2 Pause/unpause
CTRL-F3 Pause back to regular window/unpause

However, I am unable to see it in action properly. It does appear to have a windowing function, but the sound is turned off when that happens, which leads me to indicate that it is more in the nature of a "Fast Forward" than anything. Full-screen does NOT work on my machine at any of the specified resolutions, and it uses common video hardware. I would like to add this as a cautionary note.

Thanks to this unknown person for the news.

11:51:  First of all, let me start off by saying this is indeed a public beta (you can visit www.psemu.com and see for yourselves). This is version 1.0.19 of one of the only two PSX emulators out there, PSEmu Pro. Some of the new things in this version include:

Emulator Release: FCFAN98 1.03 news by zophar
07:07:  The final in a 4-part series of *FAN98 emulators, FCFAN98 emulates the NES, otherwise known as the Famicom in Japan. All I know about this one is that it has sound, can run The Legend of Zelda, and runs full speed on a P133. Anyone who can translate the documentation and/or EXE, be sure to e-mail me.

You can download FCFAN98 1.03 from the NES emulators page.

Emulator Release: GBFAN98 1.02 news by zophar
06:41:  The third of a series of japanese emulators which all include "FAN98" at the end, GBFAN98 emulates the GameBoy. Like SMSFAN98 and GGFAN98, it is for Windows, uses DirectX for video and sound, and seems to be able to log MIDIs (see the dirs it creates). Like the other two, I know nothing else about GBFAN98, so if anyone can translate the documentation and/or EXE, it would be appreciated. Just send me an e-mail.

You can download GBFAN98 1.02 from the GameBoy emulators page.

    Emulator Release: SMSFAN98 & GGFAN98 1.02 news by zophar
06:27:  A series of emulators, which all include 'FAN98' at the end of the name, have been released. These are all japanese emulators for Windows, and all use full screen DirectX video modes. These two emulators, SMSFAN98 and GGFAN98, emulate the Sega Master System and GameGear respectively. They both emulate sound, and I believe the ability to log MIDIs are included.

I know nothing else about either of these emulators. (If the documentation is not japanese, but chinese, or korean, please don't yell at me, I don't know any of these languages!) Please e-mail me if you can translate the documentation to these two emulators, and can offer any other insight.

You can download SMSFAN98 & GGFAN98 1.02 from the Sega Master System/GameGear emulators page.

Utility News: New NEOFix news by zophar
05:48:  A new version of NEOFix (not to be confused with the NeoRage team's Neo Fix) has been released. This Windows utility replaces some bad Neo Geo ROM dumps with good ones. A great util to have. Here's what's new:

  • renames (most) neo*geo zipfiles to their correct name.
  • uses TRIMIT (By Tim Eckel of Arcade@Home) to fix the sizes of all known incorrectly sized roms (I updated his .dat file to include a few more roms
  • fixes the "bug" with roms zipped with recursed subdirs).
  • includes the Fatal Fury 3 (fury3_p1.rom) fix.
  • includes the Magical Drop 2 (drop2_c1.rom & drop2_c2.rom) fix.
  • includes the recently updated Mahjong Kyo Retsuden fixed roms (new Nov 11).
  • includes the correct Metal Slug 2 ms2_s1.rom.
  • includes the correct World Heroes 2 Jet wh2j_s1.rom.

Emulator Release: SideWay 0.21 news by zophar
04:56:  Somehow, we never added this MidWay multi-arcade emulator for DOS to ZD. It can run a number of old MidWay arcade games such as Seawolf, Boothill, Gunfight, Space invaders, Amazing Maze and Space invaders Deluxe. It also seems that there were many versions before 0.21, so here's what's new in SideWay 0.21:

  • Finished Guided Missile, only sound is missing.
  • Tournament baseball is also finished except for sound and controls. Sound will be added in Guided missile if I get the samples, and the rest of the games are finished on request only.

You can download SideWay 0.21 from the Multi Arcade emulators page.

Emulator News: NeoDanji 0.025 r2 changes news by zophar
02:24:  Thanks to Yoonjoon Lee, we now have the list of what's new in the latest NeoDanji. Here it is:

    On Nov 14th:

There is a converter bug in Art of Fighting 3. King of Fighters 96 and 97 work, but no sound, yet.

    On Nov 12th:

New loading method improved the loading speed so that game starts faster. In some cases, the game screen doesn't show up until the game is fully loaded, but the problem will be fixed in the next version, hopefully.

You need to convert the file, once again. prg.bin img.bin lay.bin inf.bin z80.bin pcm.bin are the name of files that are being generated by the converter. You also need to have neo-geo.rom to execute the rom. Converter supports ss2_cnv.exe and aof3_cnv.exe, which are for Samurai Showdown 2 and Art of Fighting 3 respectively.

So, convert the file first, then run danji.exe. Since there is no file search funcion, you need to over write the converted file which is in the dame directory as the danji.exe is.

Emulator Release: Z26 1.20 news by zophar
17:25:  John Saegar has released version 1.20 of his Atari 2600 emulator for DOS, Z26. Here's what's new:

  • A number of minor adjustments, mostly having to do with graphics of specific games. Probably the most interesting fix is the positioning of objects in Ms. Pacman and Yars' Revenge. Things no longer jump around near the left border in Ms. Pacman, and the rainbow thingy is now correctly positioned in Yars' Revenge. Thanks to Bradford Mott and Eckhard Stolberg for helpful information about object positioning.

You can download Z26 1.20 and its source from the Atari 2600 emulators page.

Misc. News: ZD Anniversary SNES demo released news by javagod
21:28:  Vega Centario, from 777h, has been kind enough to code a SNES demo commemorating the 2 year anniversary of Zophar's Domain, which we celebrated this past Monday. It's quite a good demo for such a small size, even though, in Vega's own words, "the font sucks". If you've been following the hoopla during the week, or even if you haven't, get this cool demo now.

You can find the ZD commemorative demo at the SNES public domain ROM page here.

Site News: Friday the 13th: Nostradamus said so news by zophar
16:38:  Well, another Friday the 13th, another depressing, evil, scary, or otherwise strange news post. This one is without a doubt the best Friday the 13th update ever. Here we go:

Over 400 years ago, Michel De Nostradame, better known as Nostradamus, wrote a series of 'quatrains', 4 lined predicitions that told of future events from the time of publication until the end of time. Known as The Propheties, they were written in a combination of French and Latin.

Below is my favorite prediction, one which has not come true yet. It predicts something, possibly World War III, the AntiChrist... well, we'll leave the explanation up to you. I scanned this from a book I bought years ago, The Final Prophecies of Nostradamus, by Erika Cheetham. Her explanation is at the bottom, the original text on the left, and the translation on the right. Enjoy!

In the year 1999, and seven months
from the sky will come the great King of Terror.
He will bring to life the great king of the Mongols.
Before and after war reigns happily.

It now does DirectX Fullscreen, and is (IMHO) a very stable DirectX hybrid. If you don't know what I mean, Fullscreen & Windowed without restarting the emulator. I almost put in FPS, since I did a (minor) speed increase, but I wont disgrace myself until I get the video conversion optimized. On the next release, I hope to get the pause and kill (N64 emulation) commands working.

Emulator News: fwGBC 0.1 news by zophar
21:19:  DogHuang has sent me an e-mail regarding a new emulator from FanWen, of fwNES fame. This one is a GameBoy Color emulator, and will be released soon:

The auther FanWen will have to serve his military service ( as a constitutional duty, I've just finished it and are to start my career) on Nov.17. So, fwGBC 0.1 will be released before Nov.16! That's the deadline.

fwGBC is an emulator which emulate the new GameBoy Color. FanWen has it that the release will support standard Gameboy games as well as Gamboy color games. As for the part of Super GameBoy, not enough time to do it.

He says currently it runs well with TetrisDX/DQM/Hexcite with colors. I guess that's as what we see in VGBwin 1.3. No comments on sound. :-)

A huge thanks to DogHuang for e-mailing ZD about this. Guess we shall wait and see :)

I lost about a dozen "new" carts when my hard drive crashed last week that I hadn't backed up yet, and they're also on this list. If you have them, or know someone who does, or if any of your patrons have the original carts and would be willing to write a review in the new G3 format, them please let me know.

Emulator Release: MAME 0.34 Beta 7 news by zophar
18:12:  This is it folks. Incredibly, released on the 2 year birthday of Zophar's Domain, MAME now emulates the one Arcade game I've always wanted to see emulated: Mortal Kombat. My life, as far as arcade emulation goes, is complete. Of course, on my Cyrix, I probably won't have too much fun.

It also supports ones such as: Smash Tv, Total Carnage, Narc, Strike Force, Hi Impact Football, Super Hi Impact, and a few others. Support for MK2 possibly in the future.

You can download MAME 0.34 Beta 7 from the MAME page. Thanks to Dave of DavesClassics for the news.

Site News: Guess the ZD staffer! news by zophar
13:48:  Well, I've been promising this one for a long time now. Thanks to UMAX Astra 610P scanners, Kodak film, and polaroid cameras, we can now have the 'Guess the ZD staffer!' contest. Basically, there are 12 staff members of ZD. 7 of us (I won't say which 7, for all you know, mine may not even be one of them...but it might be!) submitted pictures. 5 of us did not. Your job is to guess which picture matches which staff member. You only get one try (multiple submissions will be ignored). If you guess all 7/7, you get a mention on ZD's front page, and maybe something else (haven't decided yet).

May the games begin! And don't forget to wish ZD a happy birthday.

Site News: Reflections VI: Bet you didn't know... news by zophar
15:53:  This is the final edition of Reflections, and should be the most interesting of any of them. Be sure to stop by ZD midnight EST tonight, for the 2nd year birthday of ZD... you should have some fun :)

I'm going to share with all of you now, some facts about ZD that you didn't know about, from before ZD originated, until the present. did you know...

The person who designed the original layout of ZD was 'eV|Lh0mEr', and it lasted for over half a year, before Infe gave it a 'face lift'.

The name 'Zophar's Domain' comes from a video game called 'Lunar: Eternal Blue' for the Sega CD. My nick wasn't always Zophar, however. Before September of 1996, I was known as 'Ghaleon', a charactar from Lunar 1, and before that, I was known as 'The Shadow'.

In 1995 and early 1996, I ran a local Philly BBS called 'The Shadow's Domain'. Go figure.

On December 4, 1996, ZD got frames, and they stayed for about 4 weeks. The design basically flopped, as all the frames were used for was to encase the logo, and 2 floating NES and SNES systems. They did nothing to help make the page easier to navigate.

On December 14, 1996, I attempted to start a protest to get The_Brain to remove the yellow cripple from VSMC. It didn't work :)

When ZD opened on November 9, 1996, it only had 3 finished sections: the front page, the What's new page, and a links section.

On February 21, 1997, Zophar's Domain was hacked by someone. We never found out who. Everything was deleted. That's ZipLink for you ;)

ZD has had staff since the beginning, but not nearly as many as we do now, and none of them were documented. Some included: Shamanix, crispana, and eV|Lh0mEr.

According to the old news for March 1997, ZD 'removed a roms section', which I don't even recall ever putting up. Alzheimer's disease setting in already?

NESticle 0.20, Rishgar 0.91, and MAME 0.14 were all released the same day: April 3, 1997.

ZD has won about 30 awards since its start, 29 of which we didn't even bother looking at :) The only award we ever mentioned was the OWC Award, which, by the way, Emu News Service reported on (it was the second news article ever posted on Emu News Service, the first being 'Welcome')

On May 31, 1997, I wrote something called 'The Emulation Dream'. It was inspired by 'Conscience of a Hacker' (I'm sure you all know what that is).

On June 29, 1997, I posted this on the What's New Page:
Non Emu Related: Tyson loses to Holyfield in Rd. 3 for biting a chunk of Holyfield's ear off!

ZD has been up more than it's been down (I bet that's a fun fact you didn't know).

Hope you enjoyed this final edition of Reflections. If you'd like to see more in the future, e-mail me and let me know.

Remember, ZD turns 2 years old at midnight EST. Be here, or be doomed to eat a stick of butter forever.

Emulator Release: X128 0.92? news by zophar
13:09:  Well, normally I would go into something like this:

James McKay has released version 0.92 of his Sinclair Spectrim emulator. Here's what's new:

  • A full crash on exit occured when using the 'Use240Lines' mode and a TZX file was open.
  • Z80 engine modified slightly in preparation for V1.0 (no visible effect).

However, the problem is, the FTP site that the official page links to for the files, is down! So, if anyone has X128 0.92, Adlib and SoundBlaster versions, please e-mail me.

Emulator Release: GalEMU 0.22 news by zophar
13:04:  A new version of GalEMU, a multi arcade emulator for DOS, which supports Galaxian, its bootlegs, and a number of other games. Here's what's new in 0.22:

  • Fixed character display problem causing invisible rocks on Pisces, and your ship to disappear in Moon Cresta.
  • Fixed Moon Cresta graphics, now looks better than it does on MAME.
  • Added lamps. Are on by default, and can be switched off by pressing the 'L' key. Shown by white circles at the bottom of the screen.
  • Sound!!! Sound in all games except Zig Zag which uses an AY-3-8910. The sound may be a bit off-pitch, anyone know the correct pitch range? Samples are required for some sounds, but are not needed to run the emulator. The samples must be in the MAME .sam format.
  • Zig Zag still doesn't work - all the sprites are invisible. Also, the coin inputs don't work. Anyone got any ideas why?
  • Various other changes

You can download GalEMU 0.22 from the Multi Arcade emulator page.

Misc. News: SPCAMP clarification news by zophar
12:45:  SPCAMP .300, as you all know, was released last night. For those that don't understand what a Winamp plugin is, it's a DLL file that you copy into the 'plugins' dir of WinAmp that will allow the player to be able to play SPC files. For those who have never heard of WinAmp, it's a multi audio format player (MP2/3, various MOD formats, Wave audio, etc) for Windows. If you don't have WinAmp, get it at www.winamp.com.

SPCAMP .300 has also been added to the SPC Utilities page, if you just have to see the comments I wrote for it :)

Emulator Release: TrueReality v0.1.1 (for Unix) news by rouge
02:27:  Latest (and greatest) version of TrueReality N64 emulator for Unix. Nothing really big to be reported in this version, that and there is no what's new, there may be better controller emulation, it is unclear at this time... The only difference that I can tell is that they are using real version numbers now, although I liked the old way better... Also, as long as I'm here, NSFE the N64 emulator for win9x has been put on hold, the author is trying emulate the first commercial games (Mario64), not sure what that has to do with clearing the NSFE archive, but it's good nontheless! Thanks to Xaviar for the news...

Emulator Release: Generator v0.03 for Unix news by rouge
02:01:  New Genesis emulator for Unix, this one works under all Unix will X-Windows. No sound, no joystick support, no saving/loading game files, and no readme, this emu should run full-speed on a p100, but it still needs some, although the author seems dedicated to perfect emulation of Sonic the Hedgehog.

Site News: VSMC: The past of SNES emulation was then news by zophar
13:34:  VSMC, the emulator, which The_Brain liked to call 'The future of SNES emulation', has long since been discontinued...however, I feel that it deserves its own news post. This was the emulator that really began SNES emulation, and on a higher plane, console emulation itself! A huge thanks goes out to TCK for this. This is VSMC .70 Beta, pre-release 1...

  • Virtual Super MagiCom 0.70 Beta Pre-Release 1 [Released 9/1/94]

Site News: Reflections V: Ancient emulators news by zophar
11:26:  This is a very special Reflections. In doing this one, I found myself having to stop downloading these ancient emulators, and play the ones I had downloaded so far, just for the heck of it! I hope you all enjoy it.

In looking back on the past 2 years, I decided to upload some 'ancient' emulators, ones that I had found on local BBSs and emulator sites such as Node 99 and Archaic Ruins (the two sites that I always visited in 1996). This has been made possible thanks to Rob`, Bomberman, letoram and Omega. Enjoy this classic emulators!

    Arcade

    MAME 0.1 [Released 2-5-97]
This was the first version of the ultimate multi arcade emulator, MAME. MAME, which, as you all know, stands for Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, only ran five games at the beginning: Crush, Ladybug, PacMan, MsPacman, and Pengo. Comes with full source too :)

    GameBoy

    VGB-DOS 0.62 [Released 5-28-96]
This emulator has special meaning for me. It was the first emulator I ever saw, back in July of 1996, when I had bought my new computer. My friend Ross (gb) told me about emulators, to which I responded, "haha, you can't fit GameBoy games in the disk drive". Boy, those were the days :) This was the fourth release of VGB-DOS. Check it out, still quite good as far as GameBoy emulation goes.

    Genesis

    GenEm 0.17 [Released 11-16-96]
This was the third version of GenEm, the second Genesis emulator (the first being MegaDrive, still available on ZD), coded by Markus Gietzen. This version included a faster, less compatible version and a slower, more compatible version. No FM sound was implemented yet, just PSG, emulated through the PSG. Sounded like crap but it was amazing nonetheless :)

    NES

    NESA 0.13 [Released 9-12-96]
This was one of the earlier NES emulators. Coded in assembly by Paul Robson, author of other emulators like GB 97, A26 (became Z26 by John Saegar), and TNES (previously NESA). There was no sound, and the best you'd get back then was Pasofami and iNES :) Still, it was faster than most others, and ran a few games.

    Master System/GameGear

    Massage 0.61 [Released 10-26-96]
The first Master System/GameGear emulator I ever used (I actually used 0.45, but can't find it to put here), it is STILL a great emulator, since there still aren't many SMS-GG emulators. This was the C version, which wasn't as fast as 0.7x and later, but who cares, it's a classic!

    SNES

    ESNES 0.10a [Released 3-12-97]
I actually used 0.02a of ESNES first, in 1996, but this was the earliest release I could find. ESNES was an SNES emulator coded in C by Carlos Baides, and when I first beta tested it, it could run a few demos, and Mr. Do! =)

    Snes96 0.3.904 [Released 11-05-96]
There were many versions of Snes 96 before this, but this was one of the first versions that could play games at some sort of playable speed on fast computers. I found myself thinking back to when I found an even older Snes96 on a local Philadelphia BBS. Ahh, the good old days...

    Snes97 0.0.0.1 [Released 3-3-97]
This was the first version of Snes97, which was Snes96 and then some. This version ran about 25 games or so, all of which fit in a tiny little text file :) Compare that with the SNES compatibility list's size, with all the games Snes9X now runs. WOW!

    Super Pasofami 1.2e [Released 6-10-96]
3 words: DON'T RUN THIS. Unless you want to experience pain. :) This is the famous 'trojan version' of Super Pasofami, which deletes files like win.com if you attempt to register it, or edit the emulator in any way. Future versions of Super Pasofami may have contained this as well. A good emulator which was totally avoided due to 1.2e.

    SNES Professional 0.05b [Released 11-17-96]
This emulator never really became much. This version ran nothing, and the final version ran a couple games. However, the reason it's here is because 1)it's old, 2)it was the third SNES emulator I ever tried, and 3)It has a kickass GUI. Enjoy the memories.

    VSMC 0.9611a [Released 12-8-96]
This was the final version of VSMC before a yellow palette was inserted to make it pretty much unplayable. This was also the final free version of VSMC before The_Brain started charging. What can I say? Super Pasofami was the only emulator more advanced at the time, and this could have been something...download it and relive the memories!

I hope you enjoyed today's Reflections! Any questions/comments? E-mail me. 2 days and counting to ZD's 2nd birthday!

05:57:  Paul Jensen has released version 0.2 of his Genesis GYM to MIDI file converter, gym2mid. This program is great for people wishing to create Genesis MIDI music, but want to have a base to work from, instead of starting from scratch. Here's what's new:

  • Spiffed-up the GUI
  • Cleaned up the code
  • Fixed some bugs
  • Made the frequency->MIDI note conversion more accurate
  • Added support for DAC events (see MIDI author info)
  • Changed the name from GYM-2-MID to gym2mid (what a difference, huh?).

Site News: Fun little treat news by zophar
13:40:  With ZD's birthday approaching rapidly, I decided to take a look around ZD, and noticed that I had totally forgotten about a section of ZD I made about half a year ago out of total boredom. It was my little "ROMs" section, but it wasn't exactly meant for people to download ROMs. It was for people who went looking for ROMs on ZD, and instead of finding an archive of ROMs, they'd find a good laugh. So, check it out. I hope you get a good laugh out of it, I was on a caffeine rush at the time. Note: Anyone named in the 'descriptions' part is there for pure fun, not to hurt anyone :)

Site News: Reflections IV: The 5,000 fingers of Zophar's Domain news by zophar
00:38:  For the few of you who have been visiting Zophar's Domain since the beginning, you should know that we have moved more times than a wandering nomad in the desert. But just how many moves do any of you recall? Well, this reflection will show each URL, the approximate duration we stayed for, and why we left. Note: ~ means approximately.

    ~October 1996 - November 9, 1996
URL:http://www.geocities.com/ .... (not sure of the actual URL)
Reason for leaving: What can I say? With 1 meg of space at the time, slow speeds, and a URL no one could remember, it just wasn't fun. At the time, the website wasn't really Zophar's Domain, as it had nothing to do with emulation.

    November 9, 1996 - September 28, 1997
    URL:http://www.ziplink.net/~shadow5
Notes: This was my ISP until the president of ZipLink changed the Agreement Terms to include 1)no more than 100 hours of use a month and 2) no more than 5 MB of space, with bandwidth restrictions.
Reason for Leaving: Same reason I left ZipLink and went with Voicenet. Not enough space, time, or bandwidth.

    September 28, 1997 - November 21, 1997
    URL:http://silent.darkening.com/~zophar/
Notes: The news page on September 28, 1997 read - Zophar's Domain has moved! Thanks go out to 'Nobody', who is now hosting my site!
Reason for leaving: The site was DoS'd by an unknown person, causing it to go down for a few hours. The admin flipped out, and we were kicked off.

    November 21, 1997 - March 27, 1998
    URL:http://zophar.internexus.net/
Notes: This was our first subdomain, provided by Ripfob and JL_Picard. This was when the modern ZD as you know it began to take shape. For a while it seemed as though we had finally settled in. However, I guess we were too much for the T1 New Jersey ISP to handle.
Reason for leaving: We used too much bandwidth for it to handle, and we were asked to leave.

    March 27, 1998 - June 13, 1998
    URL:http://zophar.malicia.com
Notes: Ahh, Malicia... this was when the 'downtime fairy' started visiting us. We had much more freedom, space, and bandwidth than ever before, and after almost 3 months, I was sure we were settled in.
Reason for leaving: We never really left! Instead, we moved to another 'box' which was also run by the same person who ran Malicia, and we became...

    June 13, 1998 - August 8, 1998
    URL:http://www.zophar.net (zophar.net)
Notes: Well, we thought we had it all. We were hosted on 'milhouse.web-ex.com' now, but with our own domain name, no one knew. All was well...until...
Reason for leaving: We lost the name! Someone didn't pay the bill! Cough.

    August 8, 1998 - September 30, 1998
    URL:http://zophar.malicia.com (milhouse.web-ex.com/~zophar)
Notes: We were still on milhouse, but zophar.malicia.com pointed to it.
Reason for leaving: We got our domain name back! We never left the server, but changed back to zophar.net

    September 30, 1998 - ???
    URL:http://www.zophar.net

What does the future hold for ZD? Only The Shadow knows... ;-)

Stay tuned for tommorow's edition of Reflections!

21:45:  The mystery of the missing speech has been solved! The sound ROMset that is currently floating arouind is incomplete. The one change in this version is just that:

  • Support for the complete sound roms.

    He also notes:

The files TMNT.C13 (aka 963-a26) and the file TMNT.D18 (aka 963-a27) are meant to be 128k (131,072 bytes) in size, NOT 64k (65,536 bytes).

Imcomplete files will cause DTMNT to flash a warning as it loads. You'll need to get the full rom set or you won't notice any difference between this version and version 0.53.

You can download DTMNT 0.54 from the Single Arcade emulators page.

Frontend News: Forte 3.0X! news by bnu
04:54:  Forte, formerly named Forté and SPCPlugin :), the SPC Player frontend with the most features among all of them has been updated!
    This new version features:

  • Supports Winspc, along with Openspc and Spcplay.

  • Redrew the interfaces! The old ones sucked :)

  • Explorer associations work fully (ie. You can double click a song in explorer while Forte is running, and it'll stop, and play that song. Same with playlists).

  • Slightly different window finding functions, seem to be more accurate.

  • Almost complete rewrite of all code, using class modules now :)

  • You can get it from the SNES Emulator frontends page.

Site News: Reflections III: Counter madness news by zophar
03:29:  In this third edition of Reflections, I have decided to post all the old "landmark hit" news (ie, 100,000, 200,000, etc) that ZD has posted over the last (almost) two years. A note: we never did receive e-mails on the 600,000th, 800,000th, and 900,000th hits. Spooky, ain't it? Note: These are from the old 'What's new' archives, and thus, most have no headers, like the other Reflections updates.

Either way, I might as well congratulate them both on being the 500,000th visitors to Zophar's Domain. Congratulations, both TaunT and The Black Falcon. 03:35: Outlaw2 has become visitor 700,000 to Zophar's Domain. To quote him, "Zophar's Domain is l33t! So what do I win?" Originally, I had planned to award the winner a t-shirt of Mario sodomizing an IDSA representative, but I felt that to be too brutally honest, so I guess the orange rubber ducky will have to do.

Site News: Reflections II: The week of sorrow news by zophar
12:51:  The first week of April was, indeed, a week that changed emulation forever (for better, or for worse? You decide). The events of this week include: The first release of NESticle, the death of Haruki Ikeda (for those of you who weren't around then, he was working on a Genesis emulator; he died in a car crash), the theft of the NESticle source, NESticle's cancellation, and the death of DC (Damaged Cybernetics). Here's the news ZD reported on that fateful week:

    [Begin ancient News]

    04/03/97
    --------
NESticle 0.2 released!!! GET IT NOW!!! INES KILLER!!!!!!

NESticle was released recently and it is GREAT!!! Good sound and great pallete, with win95 and dos versions included!! Get it now and try it fer yerself!!!!

    04/06/97
    --------
    Haruki Ikeda has died

He will be missed greatly, as he was invaluable to the emulation scene. In memory of Haruki Ikeda, we ask for anyone who wants to start a genesis emulator project, a colloberative effort, as Haruki was in the middle of coding Kyoto when he got into his car accident and was killed...we must not let his memory be in vain...

    04/07/97
    --------
    Mindrape has destroyed NESticle

Mindrape has recently STOLEN the source for nesticle from Sardu, and distributed it in efnet's #emu. Even after many people objected he continued to offer it. Now Sardu has discontinued NESticle because of this. A Big FUCK YOU to Mindrape (Yes, this is the first time you've ever seen cursing on ZD and hopefully the last). Many of the #emu people have gone elsewhere, since almost NO ONE supports what Mindrape did. Oh, and Mindrape has most likely screwed DC over because of this. Thanks a lot Mindrape you bastard....we're hope you are happy with what you've done..

    04/08/97
    --------
    Ding, Dong, DC is dead!

As Cixel from #emuroms stated so beautifully, DC has disbanded. Thank God, I say, now the emulation scene can try to make something out of this. I can inform you all that GitM is working hard to bring you the best in NES roms and translations/hacks. TyphoonZ has AR on archaic-ruins.parodius.com now, so we shall see what happens..

Site News: Poll Update news by stick_fig
19:58:  Ok, for my first act of duty as poll maintainer, I do the only thing I'm able to really do: update the poll! Here's the results from the last poll:

"Pokemon, PSX, and Neo*Geo emulation : right or wrong?"

Choice 1 was: "It's all good!"
It received 116 votes (35.7 percent).

Choice 2 was: "Pokemon's alright, as the Gameboy is a portable system."
It received 6 votes (1.8 percent).

Choice 3 was: "The PSX is alright, as there's not much ROM distribution."
It received 39 votes (12 percent).

Choice 4 was: "The Neo*Geo is alright, playing arcade games doesn't hurt SNK directly."
It received 14 votes (4.3 percent).

Choice 5 was: "Pokemon and the PSX are okay, but not Neo*Geo, it's warez."
It received 9 votes (2.8 percent).

Choice 6 was: "The PSX and the Neo*Geo are okay, but not Pokemon."
It received 28 votes (8.6 percent).

Choice 7 was: "Pokemon and the Neo*Geo are okay, but not PSX."
It received 14 votes (4.3 percent).

Choice 8 was: "It's wrong, but I'll play them anyways! :P"
It received 42 votes (12.9 percent).

    Choice 9 was: "I don't care, period."
It received 26 votes (8 percent).

Choice 10 was: "Emulating anything new is wrong!"
It received 31 votes (9.5 percent).

The new poll is one that's pretty much in line with ZD's birthday and all:

"In your opinion, what emulation event in the past two years has had the most impact?"

Exercise your right in the Polling Grounds.

You can download these on the PSEmuPro Plugins page.

Site News: Reflections I: The Translation wars news by zophar
18:25:  This is the first part in a series of nostalgic ZD updates. I'll be randomly picking news posts that we've done over the past few years, and posting them here.

The following updates were posted on the 'News page' (which was merged with another page; we used to have 2 pages: a what's new page, and a news page) from June 11-12, 1997. They're in relation to the FF5 translation, way before RPGe existed, and Timko was at 'war' with Shadow...

    [Begin ancient news]

    06/11/97
    --------
Shadow steals parts of FF5j from Timko's translation!

Shadow of dragonfire.net from the homepage http://www.dragonfire.net/~shadow1/netscape.html has stolen parts of David Timko's FF5j translation, which is at silent.darkening.com/~zophar/ff5e. Also, on his readme he has made it quite clear that he is in war with David Timko. I think shadow should be ashamed of himself.
    ---------------------------
    - The 16x16 tiles are being edited in pure HEX to binary code by moi. In your face David Timko! A stupid *** like you will never get it.
    ---------------------------
Feel free to email this person with your comments >:]

    Shadow alleges Timko lied!

Shadow says that he did NOT steal the translation, and in fact says he's been working on it for 2 months. Who is telling the truth? Beats me.

    06/12/97
    --------
    Timko & Shadow merge!!

They have joined forces now! See the FF5e mirror on my page at http://silent.darkening.com/~zophar for furthur details on this great merge! Now maybe some work will get done :)

  • Created the new CDirectSoundPlayer class and linked into CLynxWindow.
  • Removed system linkage to CSoundPlayer class

  • Fixed a bug where X4 would give a blank screen under full-screen mode.
  • Fixed a bug in CDirectSoundPlayer causing crash if another app had the directSound primary buffer locked.
  • Created new error handling dialogclass so that full screeen is auto cleared on error. Stops a problem with machine lockout in full screen.

Utility News: Metedit V. 0.7/Last Utils Update news by stick_fig
14:58:  I have two pieces of news to report here. The first is that Kent Hansen has updated one of his level-editing utilities, this one being Metedit. Here's what's new:

  • Map viewer implemented. Lets you view the entire map grid of the game, and move around on it. This makes it easier to move to a specific room, and to see exactly where in the area you are.
  • The level editor now autodetects which area you're in at all times, so the graphics and room data will always be correct.
  • My document which explains the format of the level map data is now included with this editor (in the .ZIP archive). The doc has been updated to version 1.1.

Pick it up on the Facelift Utilities page.

As for the other piece of news, this is my last update as Utilities Page maintainer. I'll be taking over the polls (Grimmett's old post) from now on.

Emulator Release: ZSNES 0.715c news by zophar
02:14:  Missed update #6: It's a shame I missed the release of ZSNES 0.715c, but it could be worse, I could have been attacked by a herd of wild elephants led by a man with a Computer Science degree from Illinois :)

This is mostly a bugfix release, but there's plenty of bugs that were fixed, so I recommend you grab this one. The 'c' after the version number means that it's the version with C code in it (one with all assembly will be released in the future for people having problems with the 'c' versions). Here's what's new:

  • Fixed a crashing bug when 16bit back window clipping was using an undefined windowing clip buffer
  • Added spc program counter check to the spc stall detection to reduce false alarms
  • Tweaked IRQ processing a bit
  • ZSNES.CFG and ZGUICFG.DAT are now fixed so that they will use the current directory when the SET CMDLINE detection fails
  • Fixed several mode 7 bugs in the new graphic engines
  • Implemented an option to save the configuration files in the MISC menu
  • Added a shadow to the in-game text displays
  • Fixed a bug created in v0.700 where pressing F3 while sound is disabled crashes zsnes
  • Fixed up player 4 and player 5 so they now work again
  • Fixed up color a bit in the old graphics 16bit engine
  • Added gamma control to 16bit old graphics engine
  • Fixed a cheat code bug where pressing the down key in the browser overflows by 3 rows
  • Fixed up a bug where any memory allocation below 48mbit support crashes
  • Added out of memory error when loading a file from the gui
  • Fixed a minor off by 1 pixel windowing bug
  • Fixed up memory requirements in the readme.txt. It seems like compiling with C takes up 3.0 more megs. It shouldn't though. An asm only version will be released later without dsp1/ipx support unless the reason is figured out.

You can download the ultimate SNES emulator, ZSNES 0.715c, from the SNES emulators page, or from the ZSNES mirror site. The ZSNES shrine will be updated by XiP shortly.

Emulator Release: MAME 0.34b6 DOS news by zophar
01:39:  Missed update #4: Yes, we missed out on the Neo Geo sound release of MAME, but better late than never. This new release adds support for 22 new games, fixes some bugs, and the most important update of all, it adds support for Neo Geo sound. It's the first emulator to support it, so it's your only choice for now, if you want sound. Be warned, though, for even on a P2-233 it's pretty slow.

Remember, this is a BETA release, so please don't expect it to be perfect. You can download MAME 0.34b6 DOS from the Multi Arcade emulator page.

Emulator Release: WinUAE 0.8.6 Release 5 news by zophar
01:07:  Missed update #3: While ZD was down, a new version of WinUAE was released. Just some minor changes in 0.8.6 Release 5:

  • Refresh-rate of full-screen DirectDraw modes are either 60Hz or 70Hz, depending on your Windows desktop refresh-rate.
  • 68020/68881 is disabled in the GUI - because it is non-functional in ALL 0.8.6 releases of UAE on ALL platforms (Linux, MacOS, DOS, etc.)
  • Better networking support
  • ACTION_PARENT_FH AmigaOS DOS-packet is fixed.
  • Windowed-mode Picasso96 support is removed (it was buggy anyways, and I didn't want to get bug reports for it!)

Emulator Release: MSKISS 0.1.0 news by zophar
00:48:  Missed update #2: A new version of MSKISS, an MSX emulator for DOS, was released while ZD was down. New in 0.1.0:

  • Z80: BIT opcode corrected. Now PV flag is correctly updated. (ZEXALL still fails though... BIT opcode is a DIFFICULT one...)
  • Disabled Pathetic-BIN-loader. (I needed those keys! :)
  • "-jap" mode now starts MSKISS in 60 Hz
  • Added the ability to change the frame skip rate. You have to press 'F' inside the debugger.
  • Volume Control added. (For GUS only. Press F6 and F7)
  • Simple ROM loader from inside the debugger added... Press F10 to enter into the debugger, and then press F3 to enter into the ROM loader... It's still not perfect, but it's there... It's better that nothing... I suppose I'll have to improve it soon. If you have problems, use the DOS command line to load roms...
  • Faster Megarom Mapper #0 and SCC handling.
  • Envelopes are now showed in the PSG_Bars.
  • Added ed71 and ed70 opcodes (in f,(c) and out (c),0), but no one seems to use them...
  • Optimized still more SCREEN 0,1,2 and 3 renderers. More speed gained again.
  • Optimized main loop of the CPU. So MSKISS is again faster.
  • First tests with screen 5... Arkanoid 2 intro screen works (with a MSX1 BIOS instead of the MSX 2 one!!! Anyway this is TOTALLY USELESS in a MSX1 ! :)
  • BTW, adlib support is now MUCH better.

You can download MSKISS 0.1.0 from the MSX emulators page.

Misc. News: Midnight on Old Hallow's Eve news by zophar
00:26:  Well, it's just past midnight on Halloween, and, in the tradition of ZD Friday the 13th and Halloween nights, I will leave you all with a few links to contemplate. This Halloween's focus on ZD is the Necronomican. H.P Lovecraft wrote this book years ago, and it is said to be the ancient Book of the Dead, and by casting its evil spells, you never know what might happen...

    Here are some links:

  • Necronomican site
  • The Dan Clore Necronomican site

Sweet dreams... Have a spooky Halloween, and may all your nightmares come true.
