Frontend News: Z-GUI 0.45 news by bnu
01:49:  A new release of Z-GUI, the ZSNES frontend, has hit the emulation streets, and it's a really BIG update!

Check it out:
* Added the ability to choose a "SaveGame Directory" which would help with
keeping your saved games, especially when using zipped ROM's, because they are saved to the Windows\Temp dir right now.
* Progress indicator added at startup to show progress of loading your configuration
* Also added a check box to support the New Graphics engine that is supported in ZSNES, under 256 colors.
* Ability to choose Player 1 and Player 2 input devices
* Added a "Next" button to play the next file in a playlist
* Now saves your settings before launching ZSNES, in earlier versions, you probably lost the settings
* The ability to register the various spc files so that you can click one and have it automatically bring up Z-GUI, and start playing the file.
* This works with both the individual music files, and the playlists created in the playlist editor in Z-GUI.
* Click on the Z-GUI logo on the program window, and it will load up your web browser and take you to my web site.
* Made a lot of little changes to the program itself, too many to list
* (still trying to figure out how to close that damned DOS box perfectly).
* Have to work on only allowing one instance of Z-GUI

You can get it from the SNES frontends page.

Emulator Release: A800DOS 0.9.6 news by zophar
23:24:  A new version of A800 for DOS has been released. Here's what's new in Version 0.9.6 of this Atari 8 bit computer emulator:

- DOS: keyboard and joystick handling changed a lot. Joysticks emulated on keyboard can now be freely defined to (nearly) any key combinations using comfortable JOYCFG.EXE tool. Besides, there are two modes of keyboard: Joystick mode and Normal mode. In Joystick mode the keypresses to joystick predefined keys are not passed to emulated environment. You can switch between Joystick and Normal mode on-the-fly by pressing the F7 key. (Golda)
- Falcon: NOVA graphics extended: 336x240 or 672x480 (double size)
- UI: the too fast autorepeat was fixed - by disabling the repeat altogether.
- SIO: serious bug in CopyToMem fixed. No more rewritten ROM OS. (Jindrich)
- ANTIC patch: no player DMA without missile DMA. (Perry)
- SIO: missing 'else' in DIR routines. (Perry)
- Allegro VGA: updated Makefile and fixed ShutdownVGA(). (Perry, Golda)
- VCOUNT patch
- PIA_Initialise() should initialise PORTA to 0.
- PIA registers are mirrored not only in Atari800, but in XL/XE models as well (thus addr&=0xff03). Bounty Bob runs now?
- DOS: VESA2 mode support (about three times faster than X-mode). VESA2 also preserves the refresh rate. You can disable VESA2 modes by switch -novesa. Also colour pallete initialisation is faster now. (Golda)
- DOS: Atari_Set_LED function (use -DSET_LED to enable that).
- UI: the last ESC keypress is not passed to the emulated program anymore. (Golda)
- Monitor: pressing [Return/Enter] can be used for single stepping as well. (Golda)
- new routine for saving of screenshot in 336x240 size as PCX. So far used in DOS and Falcon ports (press F10 to save current screen into a file). (Golda)
- the Atari keyboard should now react quickly enough. DOS port contains keyboard buffer for last two keys. (Golda)
- fix for initialisation of PORTA (David Firth)
- DOS port: better joystick autodetection (Michael Beck)
- several fixes for more ANSI like C code (various people)
- ANTIC: fix for DLIST counter. (Thor, Perry)
- ANTIC: several more hardware registers are unreadable. (Perry)

Emulator News: NLKE English documentation news by zophar

Emulator Release: CAGE 1.06 news by zophar
20:47:  A new release of the multi arcade emulator CAGE is now available. Here's what's new in CAGE 1.06:

- Rewrote all sprite and character draw routines in assembler. This does not add much to overall gameplay speed, but it certainly doesn't hurt. See my download page for the source code.
- Added support for Jr. PacMan (credit goes to the MAME team for the ROM decryption info).
- Improved sound on Super PacMan, Mappy and DigDug 2.
- Fixed bonus point levels on Mappy dipswitch options.
- Rewrote the Z80 emulator in assembler. Fast is not a strong enough word to describe its incredible speed.
- Optimized character and sprite routines in Pac-Man and Ms. Pac-Man. These games now run at incredible speed and should work on a slow 486 machine. Try turning off throttling to see how zippy it runs. On my P233 it goes at hundreds of frames per second.

You can download CAGE 1.06 from the Multi Arcade page.

Frontend News: ZSNES RearEnd news news by bnu
16:50:  I've just received the latest news about the ZSNES frontend ZSNES RearEnd from Zero-X of #zsnes. And this looks like the frontend is mainly finished and only maintenance releases will occour.
Here's the news:

"I would like to say that the Windows VB version of ZRE is not going into anymore major production. It will have small updates, keeping up with Zsnes, and thats it if any. Instead, i am going to be making one in either C++ or VC++. Note that the C++ version will not be out for awhile, but i hope it to be out in about a month or two. Also, i am currently redoing the Windows version before i stall down on it. It will look much more nicer and easier to use like"

I should also add that a Windows version will probably be out in a few days too.

Site News: ROMs added to Zophar's Domain?!?! news by zophar
23:08:  Well, sort of. Zophar's Domain will now carry *public domain/freeware" game images. What this means is you will probably never see The Legend of Zelda or Sonic the Hedgehog here. However, with companies like Technopop, who recently released Zero Tolerance and its unfinished sequel ROMs to the public, more and more ROMs will appear. Remember, only ROMs that I have a legal right to place here will be placed here!

Chip-8 ROMs Page, Genesis ROMs Page, NES ROMs Page.

Remember, these are all accessible from the menu bar to the left.

Technopop, creators of Zero Tolerance, which is a shooting game for the Sega Genesis, has released the ROM of the unfinished sequel, Beyond Zero Tolerance, to the public. They have released other games they have created to the public as well. A very special thanks to Matt for e-mailing me about the special piece of news. Perhaps more companies will release their games to the public as well! Eat it up: Beyond Zero Tolerance. Remember, you heard it at ZD first!

Site News: New Poll news by infe
00:10:  Thanks for participating in our last poll. Seventy-five percent of you don't use midis with ZD, therefore we are going to remove them from the site permanently this weekend. To those of you who liked the midis on ZD, don't fret, for we will be offering a .zip file available for download which will have all of ZD's midis in it.

The new poll asks if you believe emulation should go mainstream. I think this is an interesting question to gage opinion with. What are you waiting for? Vote away...

Good luck in the future, CaBBe.

Site News: Some things news by zophar
22:36:  Well, here we are again with our usual status report every 2 weeks or so. So here we go.

First of all, the last 2 weeks have been very productive. As you know, we recently welcome two more people to the ZD staff, Bjorn Astrom and Chris Draven. I promised you all frontends pages since ZD started in 1996, and now, one and a half years later, we finally have them. Talk about procrastination.

Second, I am STILL receiving e-mails asking for commercial ROMs, even after my repeated warnings NOT to do this. Maybe if I spell it out in black and white for you. *IT IS ILLEGAL*. I can't send you them. I just can't. OK? Sheesh.

Lastly, I'm having some problems in regards to adding Unix emulators to ZD. I don't really know enough about emulators for unix and I'm having problems with the commentaries for these, so when I do add them, it will probably only be the popular ones (ie, Snes9x, Stella, UAE, MAME...).

That's all. Have a nice weekend. Buy your mother dead flowers for Mother's Day. I know i will.

Emulator Release: Atari800Win 1.9 Beta 2 news by zophar
21:36:  A new release of Atari800Win is out. Here are the changes in Version 1.9 Beta 2:

- Source merged in with main Atari800 project (excepting Win specific modules). There is an effort by the various programmers involved now to keep in touch and work out problems together.
- mmsystem (waveOut) sounds were reworked and sound great, even under NT Thanks to Darek Mihocka on suggestions that led to this working. Default sound is now mmsystem and Dsound options have been removed until I can clear up various problems some systems have with primary mode.
- Pokey interrupts implemented. Berzerk speech works, as well as other special pokey effects.
- Sound is disabled when running full speed, since mmsystem and Dsound both get far too unstable when the Atari is running 5X or higher.
- Added "Pokey update divisor" to Sound dialog. Set this higher for LOWER frequencies. This affects games that pound on Pokey to do things like speech. For most apps, high values (262 for NTSC, 312 for PAL) are fine. For Berzerk etc, you want to lowest number that doesn't cause problems. If you hear buzzing at 44Khz, set this to 2 or higher.
- Frame to frame timing is now very precise compared to previous versions, using either the CPU cycle clock (on a Pentium processor under NT) or the PC 1.19Mhz timer. As a side benefit the timer code is also faster.
- Display width has been limited to 336 pixels. For now you will see black borders anyway in windowed modes. This is because of some very brain-dead behavior in StretchDIBits, which is 3x slower when clipping a blit rectangle instead of just blitting the whole thing. This does not affect DirectDraw full screen modes.
- When the emulator is running "ahead" of the emulated Atari, it will return more time to Windows, making it easier to multitask with other programs in the background. Currently it's 25% of a P233 under NT.
- Sound now has a latency of 2 frames from the initial point it is played. This improves stability in all sound modes (less crack ups etc) but of course adds the latency (40 or 34ms for PAL and NTSC respectively)
- After exhaustive testing of various stretched windowed modes, I have picked what seemed like the best overall performer. On all machines I could test with this method is an improvement over the older one. Some cards, including my own NT machine Matrox Millenium, just don't stretchblt well. Even when doing it VRAM to VRAM. Anyway, DirectX windowed 768x480 mode is now much faster than GDI 768x480. Try setting refresh rate = 2 for speed. (which still gives you 30 or 25fps in NTSC/PAL respectively ).
- A bug that could cause incorrect output to the error log was fixed.
- The built-in UI of Atari800 is now supported, although redundant. Access it using Ctrl-Space while the emulator is running. I did this in case anything gets implemented in the UI later that I dont cover, and also because I think it's cool to have the UI run on the Atari :-).
- Removed PILL option from cartridge dialog; it confused people too much. It's still available from the Atari800 UI.
- Fixed a bug in the hardware dialog (loosing track of ROM name selected)
- Now reads the command line (even as a GUI app) much like other Atari800 ports. The exception is "-configure", and "-help", which don't exist. However you can use the command line to set other parameters and disks. Values accepted on the command line will be saved to the Registry.
- The Atari HELP key exists - use the ` key. I couldn't use F1 because that will (someday) be Windows Help.
- Added checkbox for SIO patch in Hardware dialog (turn off for some games)
- For the 100th time folks: It is NOT a bug that games play at a different speed under NTSC than they do under PAL. This is really the way it was with a computer sync'd to VBLANK. I'm tired of getting this e-mail :-).
- The speed counter is now more accurate.
- Volume slider works for WaveOut functions also now. This will set a volume relative to what your master volume is in the Win Volume Control (e.g. full slider in Atari800Win is 100% of your current volume setting).
- MFC is dynamically linked, to limit size of EXE. If anybody gets a DLL not found on load e-mail me. If you have installed any modern Microsoft app this is pretty unlikely though.
- Alt-Enter flips between DirectDraw full screen and windowed mode.

As usual, you can download Atari800Win 1.9 beta 2 from the Atari 8bit/5200 page.

Emulator Release: CCS64 2.0 Beta DOS/Win95 news by zophar
08:21:  A new BETA version of CCS64, a Commodore 64 emulator with versions available for both DOS and Windows 95, has been released. The list of changes for this beta of 2.0 is the same as the list of changes for the beta of 2.0 2 months ago, so... you can download it from the Commodore 64 page.

Site News: Some Announcements news by zophar
07:56:  Well, here we are again with the weekly announcements. First of all, the frontends pages are just about ready for release. Now, I know you're thinking, "yeah right, he's just saying that". But I'm for real this time! Heh.

The second thing is that the utilities pages will be updated, probably tommorow, and our new maintainer will be announced. As usual, any utility news does not go to me, but to this new maintainer, so just be aware.

The final thing is something which has really angered me. People, I don't mind helping you with an emulator problem as long as you have read readme.txt (or whatever the documentation file is called for that particular emulator), and as long as the question is not "where can i get roms?" I'm either going to delete the message, or, if I'm in a bad mood, it will go here.

That's all. You may go back to eating your pizza fries.

21:43:  A minor update to SNEmul is now available. Here are the 2 minor updates in version 0.61b:

- fixed some bugs in SOUND RIPPER : but don't expect it to work with all MOD players. Especially notes are rounded with some MOD players and make the song play wrong, there's nothing to do about that..
- implemented a primary debugguer
