Late 97/early 98 some time. I found out I could play FF5 in English, and that sealed the deal. This was back in the day when you needed extra add-on software to handle VESA 2.0 on most video cards. You had to play with turning certain layers on and off in ZSNES to get past a certain part of FF5 if you didn't have them.
I want to say ZSNES was version 0.2x-0.3x at the time. But you're really asking me to wrack my brain, there.
