The state of emulation when you first visited ZD...

Late 97/early 98 some time. I found out I could play FF5 in English, and that sealed the deal. This was back in the day when you needed extra add-on software to handle VESA 2.0 on most video cards. You had to play with turning certain layers on and off in ZSNES to get past a certain part of FF5 if you didn't have them.

I want to say ZSNES was version 0.2x-0.3x at the time. But you're really asking me to wrack my brain, there.

I think I came here first in 2001, maybe 2002...I was just getting into Emulation back then, but those were the times when ROM sites were scarce...I only started frequenting the Message Boards later on, like this year.

Yeah, really...I used to talk to that guy quite a bit.

Hah, I remember being so confused by this when I first found out about emulation, why (Chrono Trigger for example) didn't have transparency...had to make do with the 'fake' Vesa 2 mode the old version of Zsnes had. Mode Q was it?

Nevermind, I fail.

Hm, all I remember about ZD when I first started coming by was that SNES emulation was in its infancy (no sound unless you had SNES96 for linux ), and that EMUNews was my favorite emulation site. ;D it was something like http://users.aol.com/emunews/

I started with Backyard Emulation Links. Surprisingly enough, despite being inactive for nearly seven years now, the site's still up.

NESticle was at version 0.2, and the best Gameboy emulator was Gameboy '97. (Well, iNES and Virtual Gameboy DOS were technically superior at that point, but they were shareware). SNES97 was the best SNES emulator, as I don't even think ZSNES existed then.

Also, ZD was still on Malicia.com. :p

Sounds like you're referring to VSMC.

damn, if I didn't think I knew better, I'd place a bet on you being either PACHUKA or InVerse in disguise.

You've apparently been around for awhile... what other nicknames have you gone by?

There was some flash file back in the day that PACHUKA made that even Zophar thought was fucking hilarious, even though it was him being made fun of in it. I can't remember what it was about though, except that it had a clip from Army of Darkness where he says "My name is Ash, and I am a slave."

Well, I guess someone could make one about PACHUKA that's like "My name is PACHUKA, and I am a twice convicted sex offender. I can't even get wood for a girl over 17."

Trivia time:

1) The background was taken from Megaman Battle Network concept art.
2) The text was made using Paint Shop Pro 7 (which I still use).
3) I had to choose between the first three letters hitting the top or the y hitting the bottom due to size restrictions. One more vertical pixel would've fixed this.

The Nesticle source code had just been stolen, Damaged Cynbernetics had closed down, Node99 kicked ass.

It was around '98 if I recall correctly.
Massage was the emulator of choice for Master System/Gamegear games, and a search for it turned up this site.
I'm pretty sure ZD had a different URL back then, less'n the page I bookmarked was a mirror.
It's hard to believe it was really that long ago.

Haha, I recall that one.
It was pretty funny... Too bad all those craptastic flash animations are gone forever since emucult is defunct.

I remember one where Zophar gets assraped too.

I dunno, I've been banned so many times.... I've been in and out of here for something like 3-4 years.
I've been into emulation for a lot longer, but haven't been very active in the community.
