PSP or Laptop?

I currently have a PSP on layaway, which I can pay off on or before the 21st, but now my brother said he would sell me his Dell Inspiron 8600 for $300. Heres the specs on the laptop

Pentuim M 1.3GHZ/600MHZ
512MB @ 333MHZ
ATI Radeon 90000 (32MB-dont know if its shared or not)
15.4 wide XGA screen
40GB Hardrive
DVD+RW drive

It has some problems though. The part where the screen touches so the laptop will go into hibirnation mode kinda broke off, so when you close the screen down, its still on.
The hard drive needs to be reformatted or even replaced since it had/has some problems. The DVD+RW drive doesnt work, but my brother is going to replace it with a DVD±RW drive. Also the finish is kinda dull on the bottom.

Quasi-quality PS2 games? Cool factor? Beat people in Wi-Fi battles?

Damn, its looking kinda lop-sided now I think about it. Plus I plan to upgrade to 1GB and at least a 100GB HD so I could be semi-Vista ready and may even play GTA:SA. Basically, thats my benchmark right there. As if its Quake II and its 1998 all over again :p

Get the laptop no question. If you want a PSP later, pick up a used one with version 1.5 or 2.0. The later versions all have firmware lockouts for homebrew and backups.

I have a PSP and I love it, but I'd go for the $300 no question. Just a way better deal, even with the minor problems.

wow thats hard. I think laptop because they are more expensive and you are getting a good price but mine doesn't go into hibernation mode either. Don't worry, you should be able to do that manually. Less convinient, yes. good price, yes.

That's probably not bad for $300. I think you ought to go for it, but be absolutely sure of any possible hardware problems before buying. The hibernation thing is pretty minor really, and you said he's replacing the DVD-RW drive...but make sure that HD isn't gonna crap out on you.

if the hard drive does crap out on you, get a 5200 or 7200 rpm drive, it'll provide faster performance than the stock drive. the clippy thing isn't that big of a deal, and the drive upgrade is a bonus. all and all the psp is good.... for like a few months, then you tend to get bored of it.

Laptop. No question.

PSP is a waste of cash, I mean, compare what both can do:

Laptop: Plays DVD movies, does any task, emulates consoles, can go anywhere with you.

PSP: Plays PS2 rehashes, plays soon-to-be-discontinued UMD movies. Plays a total of five songs off of overpriced memory stick cards.

There simply is no choice here.

Well, I personally want a PSP, but if I had the choice between a PSP and a laptop (even though the laptop has a few minor problems), I'd go with the laptop. You'll get way more use from a laptop than a PSP. I'm personally waiting for the PSP to make another drop in price before I actually get one, because $249 for a handheld that I'm not even gonna play with as much as my other systems is waaay too expensive. Plus, a laptop with that kind of stuff included is more expensive than the $300 that your brother wants for it... so you'd be making a good choice to get the laptop.

Well, I have a PSP and I personally don't think it was worth the $300 my boyfriend spent on it. If I was you I would go for the laptop. You can play better games on it. The PSP doesn't have that many good games for it.

That's what the DS is for. :p (sorry, had to say it somewhere in the thread).

But yeah, I thought I was one of the only ones to say this, that the PSP just doesn't have a lot of games that are all that interesting (to me at least). Sure, some stuff like that GTA game and Lumines sound cool (and that upcoming Ghouls and Ghosts game) but mostly I don't care for a lot of the games.

DS > PSP because Children of Mana+FF3j+anything else remade from previous Nintendo systems

PSP = pwnt -- Sorry but remaking "modern" games *cough*GTA*cough* that are still easily accessble on another modern system is rediculous.

My brother is actuallyselling his PSP. He used it mostly for playing videos and listening to music, only had two games for it, I guess the novelty wore off.

Yeah, especially since I hear UMD movies are going to be discontinued, the only thing most people I know used it for. There are two or three games I want for it but I'm going to wait until it's either an outdated relic or some really good games come out.

HAH! Sony's rediculously stupid for making a completely new movie format to rape customers for additional funds knowing they will cancel it in less than a year or when people still buy DVDs. They should of been more smart about it instead of just going in blind. Which brings me to my final statement...

...and the portable Nintendo console lives on while the Sony one falls to the same pit of despair that every challenger has gone.

Why's everybody hatin' on the PSP? Mine is great. Lumines, Burnout, Daxter, GTA and Ys are great, and I didn;t pay a single cent for any of them. 1GB Memory Stick ftw.

I don't hate it for a stupid reason, there are only, at most, three games that interest me for it, I've bought too many consoles for one or two games, I'm not making that mistake again.

The DS, on the other hand, has about ten more games I want to pick up, and more are on the way.

$300 for a PSP? Not even including accessories it's too expensive--and if I wanted to play pirated games I'd rather use my computer connected to a large television with a PS2 controller sitting on my couch. <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

I'd love to see you ride the bus to and from work like I do with that setup.
