is it sexism?

puzzl

New member
so i was in my english class today, and theres a girl going around with a poll. it was about what guys and girls thought about homosexuality. So when she gets to me she says, "sign your name in the guys section under 'its right' or 'its wrong'." naturally being a straight guy, i put it under 'its wrong' and she blurts out, "that is so like you sexist pigs, you think that its wrong for a guy to french another guy, but when girls do it, youre okay with it." and i agreed with her, of course id rather see two girls making out instead of two guys. But in retrospect, she got me thinking. is it really sexism. Dont guys naturally like seeing girls more than other guys. Anyway, what do you guys think? Sexism or not?

It's something, but I don't think it's sexism. We all basically understand what the "politically correct" sexisms are but sexism is hard to define a lot of the time.

Anyway, I've talked to women about this that see it the same way I do - women are sexy and naturally more responsive to each other than men typically are to each other. For example, in many cultures, women will walk in public hand in hand, just because they are friends or whatever. But the guys don't.

It all comes down to doing whatever you want within your personal life, etc... if someone is offended because you like seeing women kiss but not guys, than they have the problem.

Your take is. I don't care to see two girls making out either. Well, unless I'm with them....um, whoops. :p

Not necessarily. Like I said, I've talked to chicks that say - no, they wouldn't like to see two guys making out.

This isn't about right or wrong. It's about what you like/don't care for. I have gay neighbors downstairs - they're like my only friends at my apartment complex besides my coworker. Just because I like these guys doesn't mean I want to come over and watch them get it on. But if they were attractive women... oh yeah!

hence my question, because it was a girl who told me this.

There's a difference between "I think this is morally wrong" and "It's not something I'd choose to subject myself to on a regular basis"

You probably meant the latter. This would be an expected reaction from alot of people. The objective morality of homosexuality is independent of gender. No matter what moral code you subscribe to, it's illogical to proclaim this as "wrong" for one sex, and "OK" for the other. From what you've said though, the original question didn't mention gender. Did it actually, or was this girl just jumping to conclusions?

While I agree that she has a point, she asked a loaded question. She just made the assumption that you would be ok with homosexual behavior from one sex and not the other. That's a big jump.

>But in retrospect, she got me

My thoughts:

1. women are considered by society to be the fairer sex and objects of beauty. (therein lies the truth of her sexist statement) On a superficial level, people would rather see two women having each other than two men.

2. Women more than men, are fluid about their sexuality in the way that feelings of love and sex are more intertwined and thus strong feelings of love and friendship can be confused with those of romantic love. With men, they typically have sex because they want some action. It makes more sense to people that two women would venture into this territory than men. When people think of two guys being gay, it's hard for them to imagine that it's because they love each other. I understand that these are generalizations about male/female attitudes towards sex/love but they do hold plenty of truth in them.

Re: or...

Valid points, all. The point is follow your heart and don't judge others for how they follow theirs. Simple as that.
If you want to live by certain beliefs or "books", do so.
If you don't, then don't.
But don't judge anyone because they don't do what you do.
Just try to be happy.

I wouldn't worry about it, it's your life and you have a right to think the way you want to, and sure it isn't politically correct but it's your mind, it's not like your going around beating people up or something, and she should respect that or she shouldn't be passing around that questionaire, and in my opinion her saying that was 100x ruder than any answer you could have written, you were nice enough to take her poll and she gets in your face because you answer honestly, sounds like she's the one that needs some sensitivity training.

Re: or...

Cyrus, Elazul doesn't care if your gay or not but what he was stating like you stated he can't change how he feels, so lets say thier is a couple of gay men, that's fine with him as long as they don't like say come up and kiss him or in other words push thier views upon him * I assume that's what you meant my friend*, and even though he doesn't agree with people being gay he won't stop them or impeed them in any way meaning he won't push his views upon them, so basically I think it's comes down to "Agreeing to disagree" No arguing, just accepts the fact that it's not his place to make choices for others and that they shouldn't do the same for him.

Re: I undrstand that

I think you missed something also though, and I'll use my viewpoint this time, and this might suprise you, I do not believe homosexuality is wrong, but even though I say that and this may suprise you, I am homophobic when it comes to men, if I see men kissing it just makes me feel ewwww, sorry but my stomach actually flipflops and I have no conscious way of stopping it, and this may suprise you but I have gay friends but they don't do shit in front of me because they know it makes me feel bad and I'ld have to leave, so you see someone can agree that homosexuality is a normal state for some people and also be repulsed by the sight of it, I know it's contradictory but we are human and are lives are full of contradiction.

It's cool, and it was an interesting and fun discussion anyway, and it gave me a chance to once more look into my feelings and see that even though I'm not perfect I have grown some in the past few years and I think this discussion has increased that progress a bit also so thanks Cyrus for giving me something to think about and learn from.

Sexist bitch!

As said earlier, it is extreme political correctness. There is no sexism going on. Infact, her bringing up 2 women is extremely sexist from the female side. Shes the sexist bitch!

I hate women like that. They feel all superior to men! *ugh*! (I had a friend that is attracted to that type - they annoy the hell out me).

Homosexuality - right or wrong - dont ask me. It is none of my business. I do not think it is either actually. It is just an action.

Re: Sexist bitch!

i dont think its wrong or anything, tho my post may have denoted otherwise. and also her stupid poll only had two columns, right or wrong. do i think its right?, it doesnt matter. Do i think its wrong?. that also doesnt matter, but sort of the way shawn said, my stomach just cant tolerate to see two guys kiss, no matter how much i try to

You know, I'm not big on PDAs when any combination of sexes is involved.
