Office Max is currently having a sale in my area and they're selling SimpleTech 250gig external HDDs for $99. I'm not sure if SimplTech's any good or not, but I know that the sale price is cheaper than that of most of the internal 250gig HDDs I've seen. They also have Memorex flash drives on sale; 1gig for $20 and 512mb for $10, but I already bought one of the 512mb ones (They were out of 1gig).

I'd vote for buying an enclosure and making your own external drive. You can probably buy a 250gb drive + enclosure online for around $100 if you look.
