Soundproof This Door!!!

Different apartment, yet another soundproofing question.

The two bedroom doors in my new apartment have slits in them. The doors look very similiar to this (#403). My roommate and I have decided to go crazy and try to soundproof them as best we can.

I realize that the best solution is probably to buy another door without slits, but we are cheap and bored.

So far, we've put two large pieces of carpeting completely over the sides of the doors with slits and we've put foam (think egg crates - same type of foam) on the inside, bottom part of the door. He's also put strips of foam on the sides of his door to form a seal, but my door fits a lot better than his. I did put small strips of foam on the top of the door and this seemed to enhance the seal.

My next idea is to remove one of the carpet pieces and placing small strips of foam in the slits, possibly putting cardboard or more foam over all the slits, restapling the carpet, and then sealing the entire thing in plastic.

Anyone else out there have any crazy ideas we can try?

(So shoot me. The board is completely dead and I want to get some discussion going.)

How much does noise-proofing actually help? I mean, how much sound can you suppress (footsteps, talking, 5.1 Surround /w max woofer)?

You'd be surprised.

If there was nothing on the door, you can hear anything that happens in the kitchen as if you were standing out there. Even with just the carpet on the door, you could notice a difference.

My theory is that even if all this stuff helps a little bit, it all has to add up. For what it is worth, we are trying to keep noise from coming into the bedroom, not the other way around.
