NEW POPE.

> Pope.

Well, I correctly predicted the name, Benedict XVI, but I got the guy wrong...I thought it was going to be the Nigerian guy.

Oh well, this one will only be around till 2009....2010 at the very latest....then the first seal of the apocalypse can begin....w00t.

Aparrently, they were looking for an old one. Seems the cardinals thought the last papacy dragged on a bit. <img src=smilies/eek13.gif>

I thought that that was the relatively common standrad back in the days. JP II was actually "young" when he was assigned

Benedict or Ratzinger? Ratzinger sounds like some kind of blender drink.

Just because the BBC article doesn't mention it, this seems worth mentioning as a further debate topic.

The Cardinals' nickname in the college was Cardinal Panzer, because he flattens liberals like a tank. He's one of the most hardline conservatives around, which is probably why he was chosen as a successor to John Paull II.

The biggest area of concern is while it's said he's very anti-Nazi, the pope grew up during Hitler's regime in Germany and at 14, joined the Hitler Youth force where he was stationed in Hungary setting up anti-tank devices (I'm guessing this means land mines?)

I don't doubt he probably is against that whole Nazi thought and movement, but I still worry about the long-term effects that growing up in that time has on someone. That kind of organized brainwashing never totally leaves someone, no matter how against it they are ...

Oh what am I saying. he's infallible anyway.

You give him that long? I think he may be lucky if he sees that long. He is 78 after all. He can go with a heart attack or stroke tommorrow.
