Here's a temporary painted (mockup) panel from one of my upcoming strips - There are a few things to work out like the guy on the right, his eyes need to be looking a little more to the left, etc.

Thoughts? Be brutally honest, please.

My honest thoughts, and mind you this is coming from a guy who's known as an asshole who doesn't like anything, is that it just looks like it's going to be derivative and not stand out in any way, shape, or form. Webcomics are routinely derided for being derivative and unremarkable, so if you were going to make something in that form, you'd want to stand out in some way. I know that if you're a guy on a computer with friends on computers who like stereotypical computer geek things like computers and super-heros and biting cynicism, that's probably what you'd make a web comic about. I mean, I know I like computers and biting cynicism at least. But where are you going with this comic? Is there something that will make people go "Hey, this is pretty fucking fantastic." When people read it, are they going to be like "Holy shit, I would have never thought that up in a million years." When I see that, I think "Penny Arcade." and you haven't even provided words. If someone else were to see it, you would have to work extra hard to convince them that you have something that Penny Arcade doesn't, and that could hurt your comic.

Now, there's something to be said for not giving a shit about what people think and just going about things with an attitude like "Hey, fuck you all, I'm surprised I even waste my webspace to provide you assholes with my creations, because I make them for me and maybe the amusement of a few friends, because I don't care if you think whatever the fuck it is you think about me." because then it's just a matter of doing whatever you want to without any input, because it's just your thing and who cares if other people like it, laugh at it, or however they react. It's just there and if someone likes it, cool, if not, whatever.

YOURE SUCH A JERK!!!

Seriously though, no man - you didn't come off as a jerk at_all. I asked for brutal honesty, and you provided what I expected. =)

One thing I have to reply to is the thing about being like PA and other comics like it. I'm not really aiming to compete with PA seeing as how Mike is about 200x better than I am at art, or VGCats where Scott is about 10,000x better than me (VGCats and his art are my favorite comic/art).

Our comic will be about Pop Culture, not just games. So there will be movie references, music, current and past events, and random crap that happens between me and the other two guys (as it's based on us - pretty strictly too.)

Everyone gets better with time. I mean, look at Penny Arcade's first comic and yesterday's comic - BIG difference in 'goodness', and it's the same thing with VGCats. That's basically what I'm shooting for. To improve myself and make a few people laugh here and there.

Also the panel I posted was the first panel in a strip, lol. I'm not even going to use that specific color scheme. I just didn't want to post a black/white drawing as it wouldn't be so easy on the eyes (yeah.. and my art is WAY easy on the eyes, /sarcasm lol).

Anyway I truly appreciate your comments, man. Thanks

That's arguably worse - Penny Arcade comments on 'culture', but it's specifically gaming culture, so they at least have a target market and they do it well. I've yet to see any webcomic that targets pop culture in general and succeeds in being anything more than "CHRISTIN AGULERA SUX LOL LOL", so I'm really hesitant to say such a tack for a webcomic is really a good idea. Out of 16 webcomics that I read, 12 of them have actual plots and storylines, two (Penny Arcade and VG Cats) are gamer comics, one (Yirmumah) is a series of one-off jokes that has some pop culture references from time to time but not a lot, and one (megaGAMERZ 3133T) is nothing more than a series of non-sequiturs that is intentionally and laughably bad, originally created by one of the characters in one of the first 12 comics I read, http://www.goats.com/Goats. Although I have no site statistics with which to back up my theory, my theory is that the vast majority of people who read webcomics do so because they enjoy a plot and not a series of one-off pop culture references, simply because making a comic that parodies pop culture but does so subtly is damn near impossible, and most attempts wind up being about as subtle as an elephant in cleats and have such witty repartée as "JAK TOMSON AND EMIMEN R GAY LOL O>LO>", which is something I just don't want to read. Make of it what you will.

> repartée as "JAK TOMSON AND EMIMEN R GAY LOL O>LO>", which

Naw we aren't going to do jokes like that. Basically we are going to attempt mocking/talking about Pop Culture as someone in their mid to late 20s would (we're all about 27 to 29). Not like some of these idiot 15 year olds do. (i.e. your LOLZZZOORZ quote).

Granted, I did use the word 'pwnz0r' in our first comic, but I seriously doubt I'll be putting that back in there. Also, it's not *only* pop culture. If you're familiar with the comic super-Genius (did I spell that right?) Brian Regan (www.brianregan.com) you'll know what I'm getting at. He does observational humor, but not in the Jerry Sienfeld way. "What is UUUP with THAT?" Listen to some of his stuff, he's amazing.

About your story issue, I don't think comicstrips are made for stories. Just look at Ctrl Alt Del. Sometimes Tim goes on these 15 week stories that just get OOOLD after a few weeks. (the house burning down because of Zeke, etc) I don't EVER plan on doing that.

Comic strips (web and paper) are meant to have a quick comment on whatever issue/event they are talking about - or else the reader gets bored. That's not something a comic creator wants. Now I can't come in here and claim we'll have the best comic ever, or what have you. I seriously doubt it will get any recognition (in any way) at all. I really don't mind that. As long as I make a few people chuckle, even if it's not every single strip - I'm fine with that. =)

Thanks for the input though, and I'm not just saying that. I really do appreciate you guys' comments, good or bad. At least what you guys are saying is constructive. You're not like the assholes on the Penny Arcade artists Corner board. those guys just bitch at you if you post ANYTHING and ask for input. You only get "its too big." or "it looks retarded." comments. Nothing constructive. Even the mods are assholes.

PA forums are extremely elitist, I've been lurking there for ages.
There's a lot of intelligent discussion to be found, but they have zero patience for anything that could hardly resemble stupidity and will strike at full force.
Not that I'm patient when it comes to idiots or anything, but you don't have to be a jackass when pointing things out...

In any case, feedback, yeah I was thinking Penny Arcade the second I saw that comic. Not going to tell you what to do or anything, but I'd probably scratch those characters and go with something completely different that's humorous just by itself. Like a comic about a quasi-invisible monkey and his conversations with the king of Sweden, while his court tries to dethrone the wackjob.
Or our solar system, Earth talking trash with Mars about how humans can go suck on a donkey dong. Hey, why not both, and add in the adventures of aunt Ughbad, the traveling albino Rhino from Somalia trying to escape the pouchers from the 24th century trying to cure world-impotence.

Anyways...um, something different, at least, yeah. ;)

It would make a better adult swim cartoon, if it were made into production as such.

I don't really read too many webcomics besides VGCats...And thats hardly ever...

HAHAHAHA!

How about a superhero who is a human with a donkey head from the waist up, and has a regular human torso, which turns into the neck of a donkey, and from there the rest of him is a donkey? It'd be like a centaur, but as a donkey instead of a horse, and with a full blown donkey-head. And he shoots blasts of plasma from his donkey wang which turns evildoers into pregnant donkeys...that would be cool. He could turn evildoers into the jackasses that they truly are! And you could have the donkey's nutsack be a big ball and chain looking thing with spikes jutting out of it! His arch enemy could be an escaped pedophile!

*looks around*
*twiddles thumbs*
*theme music plays*
Yeah!

Holy de-sweating shirt, Batman!

Acutally that's intentional. He was in poor condition before he beat the crap out of Mark, so when he did, he was nice and cool.

Wouldn't the physical exertion of leaping up and slugging the guy make him sweat more?

Next time I'm feeling hot and sweating I think I'll try that....leaping up and punching the closest person. who knows? Maybe it'll actually help me to cool down.
