Massivly Mutiplayer Online FPS

I doubt I'm the first to think of this.. but what if there were real, MMOFPS games out there that behaved like an MMORPG? I know there was a game called PlanetSide that was very close to this but I haven't played that game and I don't know if this is how PlanetSide works, but here's what I think.

Have a massive, continual world like Everquest, Star Wars Galaxies or World of Warcraft (havent played WoW so I'm assuming it's a continual world).

Have two, or maybe 3 armies in the game. Not too many as it could get really confusing. Have the world split into several territories, and let players join any of the armies available and join in anytime they wanted.

If you logged in and Army 1 was attacking this one nation in the world you could travel there and join the fighting. Log out, and who knows what happened until you logged back in. Your forces could have won the battle or they could have been forced to fall back and lose the territory. But the next time you log in there's another battle going on for another, or even the same territory.

I think if it was like most of the newer FPS games that only allow you to carry 2 weapons and a few accessories at a time, it would be great. I know that Battlefield 2 is similar to this, but I'm not talking maps here.. or the limitation of 40 to 50 people on a server.

I mean have the ENTIRE WORLD of Everquest, or ALL OF THE PLANETS in Galaxies as 'the map'. Fighting could continue indefinitely. Have commanders and platoons, patrols at the borders of your army's territory, etc. Just a huge, all out global war. And if one Army was able to conquer the entire world, or set of planets... Reset the stats, lol. Or leave the assigning of Armies to the system, that way people don't join one army and leave the other one (or more) with no reinforcements. Even it out somehow.

Of course there couldn't only be one server. But have it set up like most MMOs. Have SEVERAL servers, but they are all the same size and have the same content. There could be medics, doctors, hospitals, bases of operations, air patrols, sea patrols.. everything imaginable.

I think this would be fun, what do you think?

> The people who play Gunz Online seem to agree with you.

Atually Gunz is nothing like I described. It's mainly deathmatch instanced games in servers.

I downloaded the game and it's hella boring.

Sorry. I don't play it either, but it's something one of my friends mentioned when I sent him the link to your post.

The gameplay mechanics of what you're suggesting sounds like a world the size of SWG. The problem with a MMOFPS is that you'd have to think of some way to deal with the lag. Matrix online has some Third-Person Shooter weapons and they use a pseudo bullet-time effect for weapons to compensate.

I saw the trailer for the newer version of Planetside (Apparently the older one sucked hardcore so they revised it), and it looked fuckin awesome. Join a team and assist them on assaults as infantry and tanks and battlemechs and air support...It's fuckin cool, and probably as close as you're gonna get to what you're looking for <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

As much as I love the FPS genre, I would absolutely love to see a well made MMORTS instead of a MMOFPS.

Heard of an old game called Sovereign? It's almost exactly what you described, only as a RTS. Too bad it got canned.

I would love to play a game like this, I just bought BattleField 2 and it is similar to what you described except the maps are the limit. If there was a continuous world, imagine how much bandwidth would be needed. The reason they limit BF2 to 64 players is because our current technology wouldn't allow for much more than that. If there were multiple servers set up, each running a different part of the giant MMO world, then players would have to switch servers when they moved around in the game. Plus, all the servers would have to communicate with each other, but it is possible. I know in the future there will be games like this, they are likely to have a monthly fee to play (which really sucks) and the average user will have a much faster internet connection.

The ultimate MMO game would be just like the Matrix. I can't imagine how sophisticated the networks were that the machines built for the humans in that movie.
