Internet... where did you go?

So, last night I went to bed at a normal "early" hour [4 am] and had working internet. As a fact I was talking to some people on AIM and mIRC just before I went to bed.

When I woke up a few hours later? No internet. I wasn't running ABC or anything overnight, so I don't know what happened. The other computers in my house work fine and connect to the inetnet -- my desktop, however, says that it's connected through the local area connection -- but it's not sending or recieving packets.

So, any help would be appreciated, because right now I'm rather internetless unless I steal another computer to check stuff out late at night.

1: Assuming you're running an NT OS, open a command prompt and type:
ipconfig /renew

2: If that doesn't work, reboot the machine.

3: Check the link lights on the router you're hooked into: If yours isn't blinking, try swapping ports with another network cable on the router and see if they light; if so, either use ipconfig or reboot your machine and see if you can get on the internet.

4: Nothing? You may have a bad network cable. Exchange cables entirely with one of the working PCs.

5: Still not working? Unplug the router for no less than 10 minutes.
During this time, shut down your PC. Upon returning power to the router, turn on the PC and try to get on the internet.

6: Still nothing? Repeat step 5 with the modem itself.

7: If you're to this point, you may have a dying NIC; if you have a spare lying around, hook it up and see if you can connect through it.

8: If all of this has failed, you may be having a software issue: If you run a firewall, make sure its settings are correct (In particular, make sure SVHOST isn't completely blocked). Barring that, it may be a corrupted NIC driver (or a plethora of other issues with the OS itself), or you may be infected with some kind of malware that's finally just killed your connection.

Windows XP service pack 2. I've ran spyware and virus checks last night and came up with nothing.

ipconfig /renew wont allow me to do anything for some reason.

Here's the thing; it has to be something with my PC itself. I removed the cable from the back of the PC and connected it to my laptop and presto! The laptop has internet. The router itself has lights working on it, so that isolates the problem to my PC.

A dying NIC port could be bad; the NIC on my computer is on my motherboard, though I'm not certain if just the NIC could die or if that's a sign the whole board is going.

I suppose my next step is to go pick up a new NIC card and see if that'll change anything.

Okay, so here's what I found out.

The DNS in my router was set to a number that my computer... wasn't set to. There's two DNS numbers on my router, and mine was set like... 20 under them for whatever reason. I added those two DNS into my TCP/IP configuration and boom, internet.

It might be easier to set your router's IP as the DNS address in your TCP/IP configuration. I'm not sure if there are any speed benefits or downsides to doing this, but it's less of a hassle than going in and changing the addresses every time they're reset.

And I'm guessing the other computers on your network are set to DHCP, which might explain why only your computer was affected.

Well, I did that, and things seem to be a bit faster, though I don't know if that's just me or not. Thanks for the idea. <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>
