Help altering jump mechanics in Mario Bros. Classic (PAL)?

There's a 1993 version of Mario Bros. on the NES that is very similar to the arcade version but the only difference is Mario and Luigi can change direction in mid-air as many times as you can press the button before hitting the ground. Can it be hacked so you can't turn mid-jump? :retard:
(also it's sped up because it's PAL and if there's a way to make it NTSC that would be nice)

I was doing some minor tile editing to make the sprites to my liking and thought while I was at it I'd try to fix the jump but editing code is a bit much for me...
