first day on the job...

I've just started a part time job as "student systems administrator" for the CS department at my university. Really makes me appreciate how little I know about Unix. I told them as much during the interview (that I'd installed Debian once or twice, and use Linux machines regularly for schoolwork, but nothing more) but apparently they think I can learn all this stuff on the job.
The machine room is cool, temperature-wise (though it is dramatically warmer near some of the larger racks), and there's a http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wizard_of_WorWizard of Wor</a> machine in one corner (don't know if it works, though).
Worked on installing a serial port monitor program (written by the guy I'll be replacing) on a new machine, ran into some difficulties but learned a lot. Very exciting time. Can't help but feel it might be over my head, though.

unix/linux machines? lucky. when i was helping out at my school district all they have are HP/Compaq Windows servers and workstations.... and to make it better, the person in charge of the computer section thinks compaqs > * and that all linux distros are just BSD with a changed name.... sad sad little man.... what makes it funny is the main reason they get the HP/Compaqs ($725 for p4 2.66ghz, 512mb of DDR 2700, 40gb ATA hard drive and DVD-Rom) is because "they are all standard and parts can be swapped"..... but seeing as how they are all different form factors they cant be swapped and HP/Compaq doesnt use standards. heh

Almost all of our machines are similar Dells, preinstalled with Win XP, but we install Fedora Core 3 over it (though we're transitioning to FC4 now). Can't imagine how much that's costing us in windows licensing...
There was a budget meeting across the hall yesterday in which a number of things were discussed, one of them was the suggestion that we set up a few windows machines in the labs. Because there is a lot of Windows development done and people would like to have Windows to test it out on.
My middle school and high school only had Windows machines. My elementary school has Macs of some variety, before that it was DOS and a few things that only seemed to run Logo.

I never used them enough to find out, and at the time I wasn't particularly interested in learning the language and the teacher never made any attempts to teach it.

darknet at work

I heard a coworker playing Dogs (from Pink Floyd's Animals) down the hall, so I stopped in and complemented him on his choice of music. A few minutes later he stopped in my office and gave me a copy of the new David Gilmour album, on the assumption that I would be interested :)
This is the coolest thing that's happened all week.
