DVD burner problems.

For the past couple of weeks lately, my DVD-R drive has been underwriting. When I first got the damn thing, it would take about 30-45 minutes to copy and burn a DVD, now it takes two hours or more. When I tried updating the firmware, it went back to normal for a little while, then started burning slowly again.

I've checked the settings on the programs and they're all set to burn at 16x for DVDs and 52x for CD-Rs. Could it be it's wearing out from burning at higher speeds?

You probably already did this but in my computer right click on the DVD drive and click properties and under recording *XP* see if the speed area is set to fastest in the options. It also might just be a dirty laser also. Good luck either way though. <img src=smilies/cwm11.gif>

Is the drive (or controller more accurately) set to DMA? or is it using PiO?

Check control panel > system > hardware > device manager > IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, and see if they're set correctly. For me, with PiO, it takes roughly 30 minutes to an hour to write+verify a dvd at any speed, with DMA it takes roughly 15 minutes to burn+verify at 8x, and half that at 16x.

Thats more or less the only thing that comes to mind from me.
