I've been using FCE Ultra, but I've been wondering how the newest RockNES for windows compared. Which is better?

The "Best" NES emulator is the one you use. I know that sounds like some BS zen wisdom but really try each one out and pick the one you like.

nesticle > NES.

Well it used to be. I like FCEUltra too.

http://www.geocities.co.jp/Playtown/2004/fce.htmFCE doesn't, becuase that's a DOS-based emulator from back in 1998 (yeah, NESticle era) that FCE Ultra was based on a long time ago. Wether the current version has any code left over from FCE is unknown to me.

http://fceultra.sourceforge.net/FCE Ultra is totally different, has keymapping, a GUI (in Windows at least), great sound, high compatibility and can stretch the NES display to the correct aspect ratio. All in all, it rocks.

ouch, i've certainly shown how long it's been since i was actually doing anything with nes emulators :p

it's been a couple years actually since i've done any emulation at all...

NESticle was great.. my best memories of that were hacking all the graphics... why don't any of the other good emulators do that?

By the way, how's Nintendulator coming along? any hopes in TNSe finishing it and making it better than NESten?

The top contenders (and/or most active emus) probably are (in no order):

FCEUltra - All around very solid emu. Good features, good sound, good compatibility, just all around complete. One thing it still lacks (afaik) is the ability to map the fastforward button to something other than the '~' key (which makes the feature almost useless if you're using a gamepad).

NEStopia - Good emulation, great feature list -- including NES movie support that actually works (a feature I haven't seen since NESticle)! The biggest beef I have with this emu is that it handles speed regulation poorly... although this maybe just because I didn't fiddle with the options enough... but it seems when your comp can't keep up. emulation slows down and you play the game in slo-mo rather than it just skipping frames to catch up.

Nintendulator - Probalby the most accurate of them all... but lacking in features, and has a few querky side-effects. Not to mention dreadfully slow. This emu is good for development purposes, but I wouldn't recommend it for casual playing.

Nessie - I only used this one briefly, but it seemed very good.

RockNESX - I haven't really used this one... but I know Fx3 is still working on it (I've been seeing posts of his on the nesdev boards). I'm sure this emu is good... but I don't know how it would stack up to the others.

VirtuaNES - Another one I never really tried... but has a reputation for being good. Although I found the sound emulation to be kind of 'so-so'. It has a great visual keyboard for playing NSFs though.

NNNesterJ - Old... and inaccurate in a lot of ways... but has a slew of features... some of which are kind of silly (AVI recording). But it's quicker than most of the others listed and let's you fully map pretty much ALL the hotkeys however you want them (including the fastforward key -- putting this as R2 on my PSX controller is something I can't live without, which is why I still use this emu despite the superiorly accurate alternatives).

If you're looking for accuracy above all else: Nintendulator
If you're looking for a bit more features: FCEUltra
If you're looking for yet more features: NEStopia
If you're willing to sacrifice a lot for features: NNNesterJ

But try a bunch. All the ones I listed are the ones worth checking out. RockNES X has a ROM library thing you might find interesting (i think it does, anyway... it's been a while)... and VirtuaNES is cool for NSFs. They all have their ups and downs... so only you can pick the one you like the most.

And just for the record: NESticle completely sucks. (by today's standards anyway)
