Are chatrooms a dying breed?

It seems like every major chat program is removing the option for chatrooms. And for those of us who remember a time when the internet actually revolved around such things, freedom of speech and the opportunity to meet people from all over the world were first realized to their fullest with chatrooms. Particularly the unmoderated rooms, which are becoming more rare by the day. They're dropping like flies actually. It's depressing that something that was once such an important part of the internet is fading away the way it is.

Anyway, am I just completely missing out on some awesome chat program that everyone but myself is privy to? Or are they really a dying breed, doomed to become a mere footnote in the history of the internet?

EDIT: I know there are still loads of IRC rooms out there, but this post mostly refers to unmoderated rooms.
Edited by Mikey on 03/28/06 09:54 AM.

honestly, even irc is pretty bad, you have rooms of people where no one says anything, out of 168 people, you'd think that one would be active. an example of this is #zophar. vgmusic is pretty actuve, but its more regulars that talk.

I've always hated chatrooms and I'm not sad to see them go, really.

Boy, you hit that one on the head. #zophar and most others are quite lame...I think the real IRC chatters have converged on some secret site....

I've run into several people in real life who only use mIRC for piracy, and didn't even know you could use it for communication.
