That's kind of funny, because my experience is the exact opposite. Every WD drive I've ever owned, except one, has died on me. Not only that, but five of them died the week after the expiration of WD's then 3-year warranty.
The one that I have left, my current primary drive weighing in at 40GB, is in the midst of dying. It's been whining, literally, for about a year now. WD drives are good while they last, they just don't seem to last very well sometimes.
Ironically, I just bought a 200GB 7200RPM 8MB ATA133 HDD by Maxtor (the DiamondMax Plus 9, I believe; 6Y200P0) the other day (Sunday, actually) for $109. Great deal as far as I'm concerned, though I got it a bit cheaper than normal due to a little technicality in the advertised sale price. Whatever, I still got it at $109.
As for my other HDD, a 120GB 7200RPM 8MB ATA133 HDD by Maxtor as well, it hasn't shown one ounce of problem since I bought it. It's quiet as a whisper, and I like that.
As for the drive linked in the first post, it's either refurb or OEM, or both. OEM = no warranty = bad news. I'd rather spend more and feel a bit safer with a retail box.
>I've never understood the problem with refurbishment. As I see it, it's been through the factory twice, so there's half the chance for a problem.
Yeah, except that the reason it went back to the factory the second time is because it broke in the first place. I'd never want to own something that's already broken once.
