Default Want to Learn; Place to Start?

Hello users.

I didn't see a place to introduce myself, though I didn't look very hard, so I've started here.

So, as the title of this thread suggests, I want to learn how to do ASM coding; To be more specific, I would like to know how to edit the core ASM coding for Legend of Zelda - Link to the Past. What I'm aiming to do if I can, is see if I could add an intro cutscene to the game, or allow myself to start the game differently then just Link waking up, and following his grandpa out the door.

Other than that, it would be nice to know how to add some Mode-7 effects into the game. Thanks to anyone who can help, and hello once again!

I'm not sure how many experienced assembly hackers there are around this forum, but there are quite a few on the forums at romhacking.net, as well as several tutorials about assembly language hacking that you might find useful.

I think it must be possible, and in fact someone has done some extensive hacking already, because in the version I have, Link follows his uncle.
I am a horrible person

This might seem obvious but I thought I'd include it anyway...depending on how new you are to it all it's a good place to visit, it introduces a lot of the terminology and the software that you'll need. Think of Wikipedia as a dictionary that will make the language of the hundreds of tutorials out there less confusing, between that and Google you should be able to find everything you need to know. :>

I can't give much advice on ROM hacking specifically as I haven't done much of it, but I can recommend that you get a good "disassembler" to make things easier. "IDA Pro" would be your best bet as it's the most commonly used in the tutorials that I've read :>
