I assume you're trying to upgrade? You'd be *infinitely* better off booting the CD and doing a clean install. From my own experince, upgrading any flavor of 9x to XP will give you more problems than it's worth.

Of course, you will lose anything on your primary partition. Back everything of importance up somehow (This is the main reason why everyone should run with at least two partitions) and install XP cleanly.

As an aside, that error you're getting seems awfully suspicious; You aren't trying to run Service Pack 2 are you? That's not going to work under 98 under any circumstances whatsoever. SP2 only upgrades the XP operating system *once it is already installed* (It isn't XP itself by any stretch of the imagination).

But I only have the upgrade! Are you saying that I have to go look for the XP version for new PCs? (I've been trying to get XP for months now, so I'm getting it from an illegal website, I've lost my patience!) I have no problem earasing my primary HDD (I don't know how to do it anyway, could you help me with that?) I'll just put all my values on my other HDDs. Well, how in the hell am I going to find that XP?

Don't upgrade it. You need to reinstall it.

??? Reinstall what, Windows 98? If it's that, I already tried, doesn't work. I would much rather format my HDD and install XP from scratch, but I don't know how to find it, not the upgrade.

You need to install XP from scratch. You said you already upgraded and it bombed. Ergo, you need to REinstall the bombed XP upgrade.

Default No problem.

Back-up important files(If you havent allraedy)

If your XP CD dosn't boot,go Here

At the part where it says

1.) See TTID #295 for Slipsteaming your OS.
2.) Download boot file. (bootfiles.zip ~1.07KB)
3.) Extract the BootSector file (boot.ima) from bootfiles.zip into the folder C:\OS\BOOT

use that file for your boot image in Nero
(dont have Nero? download the trial at the top of the page)
Follow all of the instructions step by step or it wont work.
It pretty straight forward

I have done this with Windows XP pro when I slipstreamed SP2
and with Windows Server 2003 Enterprise when I slipstreamed all the other updates.

When the CD boots and you get to the format screen delete and re-create your HDD partition.
It should (99.9%) work <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>

But I have the upgrade version, I want to totally install XP from scratch! The upgrade doesn't do this, does it?

If you have the 9x disc, I'm pretty sure you can install from scratch and it'll ask for the 9x disc somewhere along the way to verify it. Not positive on that, though.
