Dial-up or DSL?

It seems that most telephone services here go for about $20-30/mo for unlimited local service. The only reason I need it is for internet service. Would I be better off getting DSL? If so, recommend a good provider.

If you can afford it, go with DSL. It's 20x better than Dial-up. No disconnections, 20x the speed, etc. etc.

However, just for basic internet stuff, dial-up is probably sufficient.

Well, I spend a lot of time on stuff like DeviantArt, and watching flash movies. At least I did before my phone got disconnected nearly 5 months ago. So I'll probably get DSL, if I can afford the equipment.

Dunno if you're talking about the differences between ADSL, XDSL etc etc, but DSL can be as fast as 4mb and faster. My current dsl service is 2.5mb/.65mb, and I live in a place with no competetive market. I know a lot of americans with 4mbit+ dsl plans for $35-50.

Very rarely can you get even 1.5Mb on dsl. 20,000+ feet and you're screwed.

LOl, my cable is 256/256 and its still much preferable to dialup.

Well, a network card can run you as cheap as $8, and Verizon supplied the DSL modem and the appropriate cables. I'm not sure if there was a setup fee or not, though.

move to Japan. they're DSL networks stretch everywhere without any reported problems, and it's cheap and faster than any small business cable internet in the States.

you can get cable that blows EVERYONE else out of the water of course. there's supposed to be consumer grade 100mbit cable landing there soon.

This reminds me of the cable companies around here saying how their connections are 'six times faster' than DSL. Now the big point to make here is that no one has even bothered laying cable in this town, so I can't even get it, but there's another reason why I wouldn't bother even if I could get it.

Most of the the places I download stuff at manage to serve me at 5-10KB/sec and my connection can download at 50-60KB/sec. What am I supposed to do with a connection that can download at 300KB/sec? Have 290KB/sec of wasted bandwidth rather than just 50KB/sec?

Going up from dial-up was a nice boost, but now I'm waiting for the rest of the internet to catch up.
