Recent Firefox Pop ups

I love Firefox. I hate pop ups.....which is why I love Firefox. Up until a couple days ago my #1 Internet browser was killing every single pop up advertisement. But, just a couple days ago it's been letting a few slip through it's nets. Is this happening to any other Firefox users? There is not a Firefox update that I'm aware of, so what must I do to rid my surfing expereience of advertisement?

There was some kind of security flaw found in FF, i saw something about it on Geeknews.

Not sure what it affects though, but I do remember reading the word 'phishing'.

Yeah, suprise suprise. Advertisers figured out that people are using FireFox, so they found a way to exploit it. Even Zophar has a pop-under on the frontpage now. Do yourself a favor and install the Adblock extension, and then get to blocking any and all ads (or even annoying avatars) that you see. Works like a charm.

I know there's one on this site that keeps getting through...utilises javascript I believe, so I'm not sure that much can be done except try restricting your javascript stuff.

Same here. For a while, it seemed Firefox was blocking ALL pop-ups. Even those usually opened by Javascript after clicking a link.

Now that problem has gone but I'm getting unrequested pop-ups and and pop-unders. The ZD main page is particularly bad for this.

> Well, not to take comfort in collective anguish but at least I know it's happening, I've installed the Adblock extension (thanks Ugly Joe) but the pop ups are not to be stopped, at least (and hopefully) not until I download a Firefox update...whenever it's released.

It's not automatic. There should be a little link for Adblock in FireFox now (mine is in the lower-right). If you click on that, it'll show all of the things that were loaded on the page. From there, you can usually find the ones that are ads. Look for the word 'ad' or lots of pointless numbers or an address that isn't part of the page you're visiting. Click on the thing and the address shows up in the filter box. Cut it off at the root and add an *. For example, for http://www.hermoment.com/realmedia/ads/click_ls.js, the filter woudl be http://www.hermoment.com/*. Click ok and reload the page. Keep doing that to items until the popup/under goes away. Also, if it's just an ad on the page, you can right-click it and choose "Adblock image".

Holy shit, Joe. I'm an idiot. BUT, I can follow instructions. Thanks for posting that last bit on managing adblock. I (*)'d liked you suggested and adblock began filtering the selected advertising sources. Thanks again, although I'm sure it's common knowledge for eveyone else. Freakin' idiot, gosh.

That's odd... FireFox always block pop-ups for me.... Never seen a pop-up on ZD since I switched.
