Default Let Us All Vomit Together!

So today I purchased a box of Fizzl'd Fruit Skittles. Unless I received a bad batch, the results were quite disappointing. The fizzing is only apparent if you press them very firmly between the roof of your mouth and your tongue and the candy itself tastes of rotted fruit.

As per usual when I receive a sub-standard product, I decided to contact the company to notify them as such. (Normally I only do this when the packaging claims Satisfaction Guaranteed! which Skittles don't, but this was so truly horrid that I had to find out if they were supposed to taste as such.)

Prior to contacting Wrigley, I did a bit of research and discovered that the coating of Skittles (and other candies) is made from shellac. The same shellac that is used to treat wood. Now apparently it's perfectly safe to eat (obviously) so the fact that it's used to treat wood isn't a big deal. The fact that it is derived from insect excretions however, is rather distomaching. So I thought I'd share this tidbit of information so as to ruin it for everyone else as well.

From Wikipedia:

The Cochineal (Dactylopius coccus) is a scale insect in the suborder Sternorrhyncha, from which the crimson-coloured dye carmine is derived.

So yeah, certain red dyes are made from crushed beetle.

What? You didn't know shellac was made from beetles? Did you not know silk came from moth caterpillars or honey from bee vomit? Lets not even take about Casu Marzu cheese...

Shellac is also used in cheap common yogurts to give them color.

Eh, I've heard of that cheese before. Certainly isn't something I'm even curious about trying. Shellac doesn't really bother me though for some reason. The fizzy skittles sound more gross to me (tasting of rotten fruit).
