You download the editor. Then you open your ROM in it. Then you hack the ROM. It's pretty simple, really. Unless you had more specific questions.
Or you could read this FAQ that I found on the first page of results when Googling for SMILE tutorial Super Metroid. |

Using SMILE is easy. Just type a colon followed by a closing parenthesis. The board will automatically create one for you
