Default Should I stay or should I go?

I'm currently running on Windows 98 and I was wondering, should I switch to XP? Are there any cons to Windows XP that would encourage me to stick to 98?

(Umm, what's a 'Kernel?')

If you go there will be trouble, and if you stay it will be double.

A good percentage of your DOS games will take a LOT of tinkering and third party programs to get working, because Windows XP does not have real DOS. Some won't work at all.

Otherwise, go for it. I'm still wearing my tinfoil hat and not getting SP2, but that's because I'm afraid it'll re-break all the DOS games that I have working right now.

Install Windows 2000 (or Server 2003 if you can get it) and use Dosbox to emulate DOS to run DOS programs. XP sucks plain and simple, I don't give a fuck what anyone else says. <img src=smilies/headshake.gif>

Don't listen to those other retards.

Windows 98 SE is a band-aid on a band-aid on band-aid on salt on top of a festering wound. And it will only get worse because it is no longer supported by Microsoft. Lack-of Win2K support won't be far off.

Yes, you have to jump through hoops to get DOS shit to run on XP, however; DOS became obsolete over a decade ago. If you need to play King's Quest that badly, you can buy a 386 for $25-$50.

Windows Server 2003 is much nicer, but as the name implies... It's a server grade OS. Installing it on your home machine is kind of like using a jack hammer to repair a pocket watch.

I struggled with 98SE for two years. I know it inside and out.
I've had to re-install XP on three customer's computers, one of them three times. I guess if you can deal with that it's okay.
I'd suggest Mac OSX, but unfortunately you can't run it on a pc.

I've had to reinstall Windows 98FE, Windows 95 and Windows for Workgroups 3.11 before. But despite having Windows XP for about two years now, I haven't had to reinstall it.

It rarely crashes through to a reboot, and when it does, I know my PC is at fault. My video card is currently making a "Oh God I'm dying" sound, but it's still going. I'd better get that looked at actually.

Default Use both!

Partition your main hard drive and you can install XP alongside 98. The WinXP CD will give you the option to do so if you run it in Win98.
What are the specs of your PC? If you only have 128MB of RAM don't bother, it'll run rather slow even if you turn all of gimmicky GUI features off.
