It seems slightly strange to me, that my mom (no longer a catholic) saw her mother (a catholic) for the first time in 16 years on the very day the pope died. My grandmother was QUITE upset about my mother leaving catholicism, and that caused their seperation.

Maybe thats not all that strange to think about.

Default I know where you're going

Don't pack any winter clothes.
This man took down communism in Russia (although Regan grabbed credit for that) stood up for what he believed, personally, and didn't waver.
People of my generation call that strength.
That was a strong man.
Just cause of teh religion, do not dis the man.....he was loving, caring and giving.
We all need to be that way.

Actually he brought down a nation ruled by a Marxist-Leninist vanguard party of pseudo-intellectual elites. They just called themselves The Communist Party. I can call myself James Earl Jones but that doesn't mean I'm the voice of Darth Vader, it just means I'm delusional.

Communism, very briefly, is an end point where states and nations cease to exist, and there is no government beyond grass roots democracy people make for themselves. It's never happened yet, and in the current state of the world I wouldn't hold my breath for it appearing any time soon.

Sorry, but I just like to clarify the difference. The USA has an insanely warped understanding of what communism is due not only to so many totalitarian regimes claiming to be such, but also because of the Cold War propaganda campaign.

I think that about sums up my feelings as well. I am not Catholic, but a good man is a good man, irregardless of what religon you are. It's very sad that he's gone, perhaps in a way it's for the best though...it seems like he was really sick in his last days, he's off to a better place now.

Everyone our age cared. Haven't you been watching the news? That's what was remarkable about Pope John Paul II. Most of the people who went to St. Peter's Square were young, and there ARE 1.1 billion catholics around the world. that's over 1/8th of the population of the world. Basically, if someone is christian, and they're not from USA or England, then theyre catholic. Anyways, not only do people OUR age care, but Pope John Paul II was the first pope to ever step into a synagogue and a mosque (dunno if I spelled those right.). He has the love of most of the world, not just Catholics, but Jews, Muslims, and non-christians as well. I'm personally sick of people saying that he deserved to die and such, since he has effected the world so much. He wasn't just "another one," his life has effected billions of peope around the world. Just because you're not christian doesn't mean you have to hate christians and all they stand for. The Pope never forced his beliefs on you. He just knew what he believed in and stuck with it. There's absolutely NO reason ANYBODY should hate the man since he hasn't done anything to cause hate (unless you're a nazi or communist =^_^=).

I agree with your definition of Communism and i think you are right about Russia just having that kind of system in name only- What is your opinion of Castro's Cuba as to communist ideals you defined??
Of course you know Saint Petersburg was renamed Leningrad after the 1917 revolution- I have attached a file which is a rare picture of the city during the transitional period.
