Default Distant Planets

http://c9.servage.net/~sc19031-ZCPG/dp.htmlThis project has been sucking up all my time recently. (warning: embedded 800x660 Java applet)
Really cool stuff, though, and fun to work on. Almost wish I didn't have a job this summer...
Edited by hcs on 05/30/06 01:26 PM.

Made a significant fix to the algorithm, there's now just a really cool screenshot on the first page, the applet is on another page where you can choose an image # to display.

That's really cool! It'd be awesome to integrate that into a space game or sim of some sort. Any solar system / galaxy you visited could be "on screen."

It's completely deterministic, but it does use a "random number generator". The seed is a 15-bit number, so there should be 32,000 or so possible images.
My goal of the moment is to completely recreate the original program, then I'll set about improving it. One of the first changes will be a new pseudorandom generator with a larger space. The original program was designed for speed (almost all the math so far has been integer), I'll be trying to make it more flexible and prettier (resolutions above 800x600), and to fix up some of the ugly things (like the rocky landscapes or the absolutely horrible rivers).
