Default web host recommendations

I'm looking for a reliable web host to switch http://www.halleyscometsoftware.commy web site</a> over to. I chose my current host because it's very cheap, but now that I've got some money coming in from google ads I can afford to switch to one that's more professionally run. I don't need anything special, besides HTTP, PHP, MySQL (preferably, lest I have to *shudder* learn another SQL), and the ability to set up subdomains and FTP accounts for other users I give some space to. I need somewhere on the order of 1 GB disk space and 20 GB or so bandwidth per month. Also it'd be best if they can switch over the domain name for me, since I don't have any idea how to do so myself. I guess SSH would be nice, but I don't know how to configure this stuff by hand so a web interface (my current host uses cPanel X which seems to work well, and phpMyAdmin) would be more useful (and would result in me screwing things up less often). But both might be better, in case there is something I have to go in and do myself. And SFTP would be a good idea...

I looked around briefly online, but I can't easily distringuish between legitimate reviews and marketing bullshit, so I hoped maybe someone here can point me to someone they're happy with, or to a good source of recommendations.

I use PHPWebHosting.com, but I'm not sure if they can provide multiple user accounts. I've never run out of disk space or bandwidth, though I admit I don't exactly run a high-profile site. Still, they're, like, $10 a month, which I love.

And they respond to questions quickly.

Do not use DevilHosting. they are VERY cheap, and allow reselling, but the downtime is horrible. I guess you get what you pay for.

I can't really make this recommendation, as I have not used them. But once my hosting runs out, I'm going to try dreamhost.com

Likewise with xanthion.com. The best part is whenever I contact them about a problem, when they fix it they claim that there wasn't a problem to begin with.

I can vouch for them, too. They were my first webhost and I had no real problems with them, aside from a lack of features. My biggest gripe was that I couldn't create ftp accounts.

Bear in mind I dropped their service about two years ago, they may very well have added more features.

I looked up phpwebhosting.com, they disallow usage of their web server for certain things because they are "popular and quickly consume lots of bandwidth".

Give me a bandwidth limit, then, and don't tell me how to use the space I'm paying you for.

We used to use Dreamhost.com. It wasn't awful, really; Tech Support could be a pain in the ass if you needed something quickly, but they were helpful. We only switched because our domains grew more and more popular and DH didn't offer a large enough monthly plan.

Keep in mind that when you run out of bandwidth on Dreamhost, they continue to feed you bandwidth and charge you up the ass. They don't let you know you go over, either. We ended up owing them like $400 in overused bandwidth one month. <img src=smilies/banghead.gif>
