Default ALSA vs Windows sound = ALSA wins...Fatality

Seriously. If you put the volume setting on the max in windows, adjust everything, it's not half as loud, and oddly, not even as clear as what ALSA produces in Linux. I'm not even talking about a small difference, I'm talking ALSA completely ripping Windows sound's head off with the spinal cord hanging down, in terms of clarity. I can turn my speakers all the way up in Windows and my ears aren't even hurting. (I just use an Aiwa Sound System I got a while back for speakers) For a sound card I use a trusty old Sound Blaster Live! and Windows just eats a dick when it comes to sound for me, for some reason, but here I am booted into Linux and my ass is just totally being kicked by the awesome sound quality difference. Anyone have any theories why this is?

no theories, but i'm glad to hear that somebody else finally heard what i've been hearing for ages... alsa is, for whatever reason, a heckuva lot better than windows sound drivers... but then again, my SB Live! is really old, and no longer officially supported by Creative! or even by the unofficial (and supposedly better) SB drivers... i forgot the name of them, something to do with emu, the sound chip, i think... so i'm using the built-in "legacy" sound blaster drivers that come with windows.

you should be adjusting your sound volume through the speakers, not windows.

since when did loud equal good quality?

It doesn't. But let me put it this way, this sound system is LOUD when you have a CD in it. But hook up a PC running Windows to it, and it's soft. It might be OK for the average joe, but by headbanger standards, it just plain won't do. And it's not just the volume, it's the clarity...I can make out the bass-lines, little subtle hits on the cymbals, everything sounds less...compressed. It could just be the drivers for my SB Live!, but I'm thinking when I was listening before, some kind of compression effect was being applied to it, destroying the dynamic range.

I'm not usually an advocate of using the equalizer or any messing with the original sound ....but there's this plugin included in xmms called 'bass boost' that I think does a spiffy job.
