Default If ignorance is bliss, he's in Heaven.

I overheard the following a few minutes ago in one of my university's student lounges, from a student talking on his cell phone:

"What is Maine? Is Maine a city or something?"

It became apparent from his next sentence or two that he's on one of our school's sports teams, and apparently they played or will be playing the University of Maine, so he was mildly curious what that "Maine" place is. And no, he wasn't foreign.

I don't know whether to be amused or saddened.

Saddened, very. If a US citizen after 18 years hasn't learned basic US geography, that's cause for concern.

Ask him how tall he is. Then you'll truly know the height of stupidity.

Eh, it happens. As long as he brings victory to your school colors and does something valuable for the morale of the learning students at your university, I'll give him a temporary pass. At least he was showing interest as to the nature of this "Maine", and the only thing better than an ignorant person is an inquisitive ignorant person. Second, that kind of knowledge lacking certainly isn't true of all football players, or "jocks" for that matter. Football, despite is barbaric stereotypes, requires intelligence, physicality and logic—especially at the college level. So, try not to be an elitist about this, the way our high schools run you can get a diploma without ever even knowing the states that border you. So I'd assume his understanding of geography is about on par with my understanding of mathematics. In many ways, he's probably majoring in football with the kind of schedule their forced to keep up with.

Ah, what am I saying. There's no excuse for not knowing what Maine is. Scratch that.

Lol, I was mentally preparing to write a point-by-point rebuttal until I reached that line. =D

Perhaps. TCP checksums are only 16-bit, and errors can sometimes slip through.

It's things like this that make me wanna become a teacher.

I grew up in a college football town, so I can certainly appreciate the value of what he does. However, were Joe Pa to overhear something like this, the player would likely be benched for the next game.

P.S. BCS bowl baby! <img src=smilies/magbiggrin.gif>
