Without looking at the rom/nsf, I'm guessing the songs that he's looking for are actually an arrangement of sound effects rather than songs.

This would be my assumption as well.

Some games have the sound effects and music run by different drivers, and several NSFs only include the music driver, leaving sound effects out of the rips.

Unlike the SNES, the NES does not have a seperate unit for the sound -- therefore there's no NES interaction that isn't part of the normal process of playing NSFs. (That is -- you won't have any games/songs that are simply unrippable due to how the game plays them)

Actually, I'm only looking for one song now, and it's actually a musical bit (though very brief) and not a sound effect. It's the musical fanfare that plays for a couple seconds when Link goes to stand by Princess Zelda's side after defeating Ganon in the other room.

It's more technical than that. A better phrasing may have been "it's not a song, but rather just a collection of notes played sequentially".

The game will have a subroutine used to play its songs. That subroutine is what is at the core of an nsf file. If there are other "songs" that get played outside of that subroutine, they are often not (never?) found in an nsf. The song you want probably falls into this category.

That's fine. Could someone just rip me an MP3 of that fanfare then? Thanks!

If all you want is an MP3, why don't you just do it yourself? What would someone have to gain by doing this for you, or rather, what motivation would they have to do it for you?

That was a rather rude way of putting it.

I'd gladly do it myself, but I have neither the equipment nor the know-how myself. And I figured it'd be such a simple thing (for someone who knows how to do this sort of thing) that some kind soul out there wouldn't mind. Also, I figured that someone out there would already have it anyway.

If it doesn't involve any extra equipment, I'm very much open to learning how to do this myself.

You can hear that fanfare if you get the right NSF. Whoever ripped it probably just cut it out after ripping along with the SFX for some odd reason. It's in the Japanese FDS rip I have, though.
