Yeah, Nintendo needs something refreshing...but I don't blame them for continuing to pursue Metroid. From a business perspective, FPS are selling well for the West. They're just going where the money is.
I'll contain my excitement for other M until I can get my hands on it. It has the potential to suck hard or be amazing, especially with the standards Retro studios set.
I think they should just make the rumored Metroid - Dread.

In my opinion, the metroid prime series wasn't all that great. I guess I'm just not into fps games either, but I feel that a lot of what I look for in a metroid game was missing / it was too long and required a lot of dicking around.

Anyways, Metroid Other M is not an fps. It's a third person game that allows you to switch into first person to look around and shoot. It's a lot like the 3D zelda games, actually, where the FPS mode is your bow and arrows.

Watch the latest gameplay trailers at www.metroid-database.com. I, personally, can't wait. This is the first 3D metroid game made by Yoshio Sakamoto, co creator of the Metroid series, and is supposed to stay true to the 2D Metroid games in terms of gameplay.

I personally loved the Prime series. It's one of those games where I was skeptical (because of the jump from 2D to 3D) and as soon as I played it I breathed a sigh of relief.

I enjoyed Metroid Prime quite a bit too. Super Metroid is still my favorite game of the series, but Prime holds a special place in my heart. Especially the first one. In retrospect, I appreciate the effort put into making Prime more so knowing it could have been butchered to all hell if Nintendo let it. Sonic anyone?

I don't share the same excitement for Other M. It's still a "shooter" whether FPS or third in my mind. While it may share some similarities with Zelda in the first person arrows, the difference is shooting is a core aspect of Metroid while secondary in Zelda.

When is the day Nintendo while internally develop New Super Metroid Wii? I'd buy it.

You can still shoot while running around in third person mode, and the beam auto locks on to enemies in order to make it similar to shooting enemies in Super Metroid (or the auto lock in prime). The First person mose is for looking aroung and for shooting missiles.
