I think because a lot of people constantly use it for purposes where it just looks wierd and out of place.
Different fonts say different things. Some fonts say "Allo! I aaam moderrrn, sleek, and styleesh!"; other fonts say "Well, my good fellow, I'm quite the conservative sort, so mind that you don't go wasting my dignified serifs on matters of lesser importance". Some say "This is a bargain fella ya hear me a real bargain so clip me out of this magazine and get to the store and present this coupon to the guy in suspenders named charlie and he'll give ya the pick of the best merchandise in town!" while other fonts say "Dear friends, we are gathered here today on this cream-colored invitation card to spell out the names of Robert and Jill with warm, flowing letters, loving applied, with the utmost grace and delicacy, by a 45ppm printing machine".
And then there's Comic Sans MS, which says "Golly gee willickers, Batman, I sure am a comic book-y font!", yet your boss keeps using it for all departmental memos because he insists it's a "fun" font, and you end up with notices on everybody's desk in Comic Sans MS about the upcoming quarterly earnings review, and it disturbingly feels like you have Archie, Garfield, Cathy, or even that damn kid from Family Circus breathing down your neck over your work performance.
Hmm, perhaps I should avoid writing long posts when I'm this tired. =P
