Default Why do I have so many places to adjust my fucking volume?

1. The built-in Windows volume control

2. If you have some sound-card software installed, sometimes it has its own volume control.

3. The dial on the actual speaker.

4. On some PC's, another volume control is built into the monitor or keyboard.

5. The control on the application you are using, such as a media player or flash animation.

Why!?

If you've ever encountered an ad-banner with sound, I'm sure you've appreciated the multiple ways to mute the sound, and employed one of the many, convenient ways of doing so.

Yeah, I hate that too, but I curse it both ways. Some apps bind their volume directly to Windows and then I get irritated when I can only turn down the volume of everything at once.

I guess in a multitasking OS, it makes sense to have individual controls for every application, but not multiple 'master controls' (Windows, speakers).

I like it because I may want to play mp3s in the background while watching a vid in youtube and playing quake, or something like that.

"Congrats! You have been selected to receive 2 free iPod Nanos." Dude, if you mute that you won't get your free stuff!

This reminds me of a problem on my last PC, where (for a reason I never found out) MIDI files on web pages would produce a very loud 'squeak' for a short period before playing the actual MIDI file. Guess how I felt about the people who thought putting a MIDI file on their page would be a good idea after that?

Oh god...those are so insidious. The worst type of banner ad ever...this one time I was surfing the net on my Nintendo Wii, with my decent stereo turned up, and all of a sudden "HI! I'M JENNIFER!"

Gaaaagh! <img src=smilies/banghead.gif>

Yes, I also have all those 5.
4 of them are unneccesary for me So I blast everything all the way up, and use the subwoofer one as my master control.
Because if REALLY LOUD music starts playing and my computer hangs if I try to turn it down, I have a non-freezing volume dial.
