Ohhhh, a fellow student of the language. I've been studying for one year, and I'm just starting intermediate one. I see you added "いま", seems more logical, I assumed the "て" conjugation implied "currently doing", but the "いま" (now) prefix probably clarify that right off the bat. You changed, "do you speak japanese" to "do you understand japanese"... is this a more natural way of expressing the speaking or fluency of a language?

としょかんで何をのんでいますか?がんばってにほんごをべんきょうしてね

Here's my translation (no reference)

"What are you reading in the library? Good luck with your Japanese studying!"

I'm studying a book called "Genki!" for the Elementary student. I'm learning. I've spent a lot of time getting to where I am in one year, and I can read around 40-50 kanji and understand about 600-700 words (most studying was outside of classwork). How long have you been studying? I'd love to talk ta ya -- hit me up on AIM: danoz2k8

I've been doing this for about 5 years myself, so I know a trick or two. Didn't stop me from making a typo when I tried to put an "n" in your "genki", though...

That's pretty much the case. You don't always need ima when you're saying what you're doing, but you'll see that the basic te-iru form can be a little more broad and versitile than it appears. ima does clear things right up, and as far as usage goes, you'll hear it all the time when people explain to someone else what they're doing at that moment.

Saying "hanashite-iru" in that case sounds like "are you speaking English?". You might say it if you were Japanese listening in on an English conversation and had no idea what language was being used. When asking about this, use the plain form of the verb. You can get away with hanasu in this case, but the more regularly used verbs are wakaru and shaberu - to chat.

I realize now that you may have been saying "I'm exhausted" when you put konpai at the end of your post, but that's not a common word. tsukarete-iru or tsukareta is the way people express this. For another thing, you would need a verb there, so it would be konpai shite-iru.

Being a little aware of your love of beer (another thing we have in common) and seeing that word by itself, I assumed you meant to type kanpai, which is like "cheers" or 'bottoms up", definitely used for drinking. Which is why I asked, what are you drinking in the library?

I'm off to go camping now, but I'll be around later if you ever want to chat or ask any questions. <img src=smilies/thumb.gif>
