I'm not sure which is funnier, the fact that a 3 page thread has evolved mocking a naming convention that's 12 years old or the fact that it started with people bitching about the term 'app'. I assume those of you who dislike the word 'app' still use 'electronic mail', 'instant message' and 'World Wide Web site' (or should I say 'Gopher site'?)

Oh yes, I say 'Gopher' constantly. Who doesn't?

Well, I'm sure there are some people that do, seeing as how there are still Gopher sites online. But since Firefox is dropping support for the Gopher protocol in 4.x and none of the other major browsers support it now (at least Internet Explorer, Chrome, Opera or Amaya, I apparently uninstalled Safari at some point) I don't suppose they'll last much longer.

Then again, there are still Hotwire Hotline servers online, so who knows... (Granted, Gopher is considerably older than Hotwire but you can't access Hotwire servers through a web browser.)

It still has Gopher support? I really did not even know that...that kind of astounds me. And jeez...I remember Hotwire/Hotline. Trying to download an episode of some anime or another via dial up was not much fun. I'm pretty surprised that one is still around too. Perhaps it was more popular than I realized at the time when I used it for some stuff.

I didn't know (or else didn't remember) that Firefox supported Gopher until I did a search to make sure that my assumption that there were still Gopher sites online was correct.

I mostly used Hotline to download mp3s. Possibly ROMs as well. I'm not sure how many Hotline servers are still around. I downloaded a client last night and found a tracker but haven't installed it yet.

Search out a copy of the album Hotel Coral Essex by Futuristic Sex Robots (it's legit free but their site died, still easy to find online though) and check out the song Back In The Day. There's an entire verse about running a Hotline server. It's also probably the greatest album ever to mention ZSNES. (I'm assuming there are other nerdcore albums that mention emulators but I doubt any of them are as good as FSR.) Also, their song Fuck The MPAA can stand up to the greatest rap songs ever recorded.

Edit: Also, I have the #s for some dialup BBSes that are still in operation if anyone wants them. LORD is still king. (Yes, LOGD is decent but it's not LORD.)

I'll do that (it was easy enough to find on a bittorrent site). I have to admit I'm curious about an album that's mentioning Zsnes. :P

I'd ask for the BBS numbers but I don't really have the gear needed to get into those any more (didn't bother with a modem on this computer when I built it since I didn't plan on using dial up). I wish I had in a way, I'd have been all up in that GlaDOS BBS that was open when Valve was teasing Portal 2 with it.
