Do IE and Firefox make full use of RAM without the system.ini tweak? I never had a problem with running low on system resources in Windows98. It's only when I've been online for a while that resources are drained.

I dont think any programs can use RAM that Window's doesnt recognize because Windows controls what memory is allocated for each program. Windows does use (by default) up to 384MB, but also uses the swapfile (hard drive) to store anything over that amount.

How does that make you think that IE uses the extra RAM?
Are you looking at that percentage number under the performace tab when you right-click the "My Computer" icon and press properties? I dont even really know what that number represents, I use "System Monitor" to check how much RAM, processor, and swapfile are in use (Start/programs/accessories/system tools). That's how I could tell that windows is using the extra RAM.

But to stay on topic, I don't like win98 because it's obsolete, only supports Hard drives up to 137GB, doesnt support hyper-threading on my P4 3.0GHz, really sucks with networking, and prone to die from registry errors or other minor things. I think XP is a pretty good OS to have right now.

I have no idea how performance status works either - sometimes it says less than 1 percent free but using system monitor it shows little CPU usage - peaking at about 20 percent - and that over half of my RAM is free.
It's Rambooster I use to monitor RAM, and the only thing that seems to drain it is having a few explorer windows open - it's worse when i have the simtropolis.com site open - both Rambooster and the performance status box show low resources.

Anyway. I still like Win98, I've had a fair few BSODs and problems with VIA GART when I installed this ti4200 card, but other than that it behaves itself and runs smoothly. XP Pro is far slicker, though, but i really need to get hold of SP1

I was able to run XP Pro on a 350MHz box with 128MB of RAM perfectly. The trick is to switch off ALL of the unnecessary special GUI effects. They eat a LOT of processing power and turning them off helps a lot.

I use http://www.overclockersclub.com/guid...p_services.phpthis guide to undo useless services. It' probably not the best guide so you should search around. There's lots of them out there.

Whaaa???
DOSBox emulates an x86 PC running DOS. You can easily mount drives in DOSBox, either as a command line parameter or from within it. You can also give it an executable file as a parameter and it'll run it, so it's easy to make a windows shortcut to run a DOS program in DOSBox. You can also drag an executable onto DOSBox.exe to run it.

You know, you can legally download a trial of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition from Microsoft themselves. What you do with it after you download it is your own business. Just thought I'd point that out.
