Default XP user account questions

I'm sharing a computer with somebody else and we both have separate user accounts. But we have different software preferences. For example, I use Winamp and Firefox as default apps and the other uses Windows Media Player and IE as their default apps. How do I balance this out? can you guys give me multiple tips to make it so it's as if we have two totally different computers?

So, what do you think, doctor? What's wrong with me?

Kill him. IE is an abomination, and he needs to use a better browser. Make him realize that, and since it's all on the same machine, you will want to care about the security holes even more. Even more so if it is your machine...

Have fun cleaning/reformatting the machine...many many times. Trojans abound! Worms need food too you know.

I'm not too worried, she doesn't go on websites with lots of spyware. Well, is it possible to put this wall between us?

I believe so. Each user should be able to set the defaults to whatever they want. It shouldn't interfere with any other user, as long as it isn't global. Anything set to being global is done by the administrator's account, so I guess you could leave that blank or something. (Or just try setting each browser to whatever default you want for each account and see what happens. )

I prefer Firefox now, myself... But get a grip dude. Firefox is quite far from perfect itself (at least as far as standards compliance goes--It's css 2.0 still has some way to go).

IE is only a security hole if the person using it is retarded (I've never had my browser 'hijacked' in all the years I'd used it).

Ya, that's true.

The problem is I made both of us administrators. The only options I have (or that I can find) are administrator and limited, which sucks. Limited is like the accounts at my school. Although I did find the program access and defaults and that did work a little bit. I think we can use different browsers now, but I'm having trouble setting up our differences between media players. I can't disable Windows Media Player in my account because I use it for streaming videos, unless there's an easier way to view videos under Winamp...

Do you have home or pro?
If you have pro go to start>control panel>adminisrative tools>computer managment

go to local users and groups>users>(right)click the user name>properties>click member of>administrator>remove>add>type in power user>check names>ok>
Edited by metbot on 02/21/05 05:45 PM.
