Default Samus : Mother Brain Returns

I've recently finished work on my NES Metroid hack.
I've been working on it over 9 years, so I'm pretty excited that it's done!

Samus' suit is redesigned, all of the maps have been edited, title screen, mission text, credits, and item locations. So a lot. =]

I didn't mess with any of the weapons and power ups. To me the original Metroid nailed it, so why mess with it?

I want to thank Snowbro and snarfblam. Metedit got me started on the hack but it had a ton of problems until Editroid was released.

I hope you guys enjoy it as much as I do.

I tried it and it's pretty cool. It's just too bad you always start with 30 energy like the original. It's pretty much the only thing i didn't like about the original.
If I have any extra time i'll play through it, just one thing... tell me where the first item is?

First of all, if you're going to release a hack, you really need to release a patch in IPS format. There are other formats, currently IPS is the standard. Along with that IPS patch is documentation about your hack such as a description, versions and an update history, credits, etc. If you don't do this, you won't see your hack posted at any of the archives anytime soon. I suggest that you view hacks in this database and read the documentation for examples on how to do this. You also need a IPS patcher to make a IPS patch. You can get one here or at ROM hacking.net.

Second of all. You don't need those gigantic images in the rar file, those are what you post at a personal website. If you do have images in the patch archive, make them small. Some people even have a manual for a hack with their patch.

Third of all. Some may not be familiar with a game, so it may be wise to post before and after images so that they can view your work. I have become interested in playing a hack after some people doing it this way and I often do it that way as well.

Also, use UBBC code and not HTML code for screen shots. According to my account, HTML is turned off and I can't turn it on.

I am familiar with the title screen hack and it is a good job. I looked at the maps and if they are different than the original, than that was quite a bit of work. If you've been working on a hack for that long, you must indeed enjoy Metroid.

And oh yeah, perhaps you don't know how to hack stats and various things. I also think that starting off with 30 energy is rather low and under-balanced for the game.

As awesome as the rom hack may be, the no ROM rule still applies here. Since this guy seems to have not been back here since March, I'll try to see if I can contact him somehow.

What a lovely contribution to this thread.

You must be new here. Not Zophar's domain mind you, but the internet in general.

Sorry about the trouble over the rom being in the pack. I haven't started to make the ips, but as soon as I'm done typing this I will.

I've read all the replies here and I really appreciate all the feedback. I started Samus off with 30 energy because energy tanks are fairly easy to come by. To me it adds a challenge at the beginning. After that it's the jumps in a few spots that'll get ya.

I'll edit my original post with the updates as soon as it's done.

BTW, the first item is basically in the exact same spot as it is in the original. One "room" to the left of the starting point.

Arrow Long over due update....

My laptop recently crashed. My most current version of Samus was lost. I did retrieve a 2nd to newest. I've added 3 or 4 new rooms. A couple secretes have been added. I added a 3rd Ice Beam. Basically, it's better than what I had.
I personally dont like the Ice Beam, so I put it in random spots. But you NEED it for Tourian... HINT HINT.

The Metroid rom has been expanded. I'm not sure how compatable it will be with every emulator out there. I know it works fine with Nestopia.

Since 2008 I've put in a good amount of work on the game. The Wave Beam room has been updated. Some work between Norfair/Ridley was done. Some locations of basic items were moved. One idea I had a long time ago finally got put in Ridley's map.

Kraid's area had a big update for leaving. Before you had to find a bomb access to leave. Now if you dont find it, it should only take 10 extra minutes to get out. You can also find a decent secret in Kraid early.

If you never beat the first upload I'd suggest trying the new version out. If you have, you might like some of the changes.

Find it here >>> http://host-a.net/u/Odb718/Samus_2_6_14.ips
If someone was smart enough to change the patch extension to a nintendo rom extension it might make things easier.

Without snarfblam's work on Editroid this game wouldnt be possible. If you like it a lot, think about thanking him. The newest options of Editroid havent been implimented in this version. I might look into making certain things happen in the future. For now I'm uploading this because of the amount of work/differences from the uploaded version of it.

Questions, just ask.
