For a while, I was into going to the casinos around here, but then I realized a trend...that I kept losing. It's funny cuz all throughout my childhood, I've liked playing poker and blackjack, used to like slot machines, etc, yet I have a much better ability to quit than my mom. She's been a gamblaholic for about 8 or 9 years now. Just about the only thing I can gamble on anymore is sports and the occasional $200 mil California Super Lotto jackpot that surfaces now and then. Speaking of sports...my friend got 2 parlays and won both (bet $25 and won $210). He had a 3 parlay of NCAA and a 4 parlay of NBA...on one of the NBA bets, the winning team was supposed to cover by more than 4 and they wound up winning by 5...so if someone missed a shot in the final seconds of that game, my friend would have $150 less, lol. The funny thing is he hardly follows NBA and practically never follows NCAA basketball, but when he bets on NFL (the sport he follows most), he mostly loses.

I've bought 1 scratcher...didn't win :P

Quit before it becomes a stronger habit. There's no such thing as a lucky streak (winning a few times in a row does not make it any more likely that you'll win the next time). Lotteries wouldn't exist if not for this simple fact: They're good at getting money FROM you, not giving it to you.

Personally, I think it's immoral for the government to use lotteries. They take advantage of lower income people's hopes, to keep going what's in essence a voluntary but deceptive regressive tax.

Default Nonetheless...

I know a few gambling addicts . . . If you prevent them (trying not to make stereotypes) from spending money on lotto tickets, they'll waste it on cigarettes, alcohol, food that they don't need, or other things in an attempt to make their lives a little easier.

People do certain things in an attempt to make themselves happier. If giving the government money makes them happy, so be it. If it weren't for the lotto tickets, they'd buy something else to make them happy.

I don't do lotto tickets, but I do play a few games when I'm at the fair . . . The games are rigged and I have virtually no chance of winning anything more than a 1 dollar toy for the $20 that I spend, but I do it anyway . . . Why? Because I'm stupid . . . And because of the short-lived challenge and excitement.

Then stay that way by pulling out right now. Otherwise, sooner or later, they'll get a bunch of your hard-earned money, and then you'll feel compelled to recoup your losses, and then you'll win one and feel like your on your way back up so you'll throw some more money in, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

Just because you've flipped heads so far doesn't mean you're immune to landing on your tail.

Everyone seems to hate the IRS, but least the IRS is honest about their purpose.

Personally I think it's hypocritical that we tightly regulate gambling, and then the states themselves run lotteries to trick people out of their earnings. It's the moral equivalent of having state-run brothels.

Gambling in a game like poker is a game of skill and you have as good a chance of winning as losing, and if your good there's a better chance of winning, but the lottery the odds are usually 2 to 1 in the states favor, and if you do win chances are you'll win a dollar or a free ticket, which is not really winning but not losing, these games are highly biased and have become more so as a lot of states have increased the chance of you not winning to greatly increase the amount of money taken in, and Isildur's discription of the progression of the gambling hadit is exactly right and should be heeded.
You stated in another post that you make a good amount of money each month, do what the intelligent people do to gamble, invest in the stock market, we're coming out of a recession and stock prices are very low right now and you can make a hell of a lot more there than on lottery tickets and if you succeed in the stock market the taxes are a lot lower than if you won big in the lottery, and the odds are a lot better to if you use good judgement in stock selection, and have you ever noticed you don't see a hell of a lot of rich people buying lottery tickets, they know better.
