Good movie editing software

I've been fiddling with some video stuff lately and I've just been wondering if there's a better, free solution to what I want to do.

Right now I'm just using Virtual Dub, which can do some nice stuff, but other things are just ridiculous.

One of the main things I want to do is add text to the screen or pause the footage for a period of time and have text or something else play over. Maybe have it focus on a part of the screen too. I can do stuff like this in Flash, but the fact that you have to compress to all these codecs and framerates to finally dub that in is just annoying.

So... anything good I can use? And no, Windows Movie Maker is not a solution. <img src=smilies/cwm11.gif>

Why not? Try Adobe Premiere then, I guess. I think it has a trial you can download.

Contrary to the piss-poor collection of videos on YouTube that use the default blue background and white text for every title screen, you can do some pretty good shit with Windows Movie Maker. (see "op3" in my sig and watch intro right after talking italian guy)

I tried Adobe Premiere and my machine choked. Requires a decent amount of RAM and an asston of workspace on your screen. If you've got the machine (and a serial *coughcough*), it's definitely better.

You want http://www.sonymediasoftware.com/pro...egasfamily.aspVegas</A>. Blows the pants off Premiere. Intuitive interface, loads of sweet effects, easy enveloping ... wow, give just it a shot. Words don't do it justice for me.

The consumer edition, Vegas Movie Studio, is reasonably priced and has some very livable downgrades from the $500+ model.
