Default iNES vs. UNIF: which format is better?

Which is the better format? I don't care about emulator compatability, this is more for archiving purposes.

UNIF has greater potential, but as it stands isn't as complete as iNES has become when it comes to board/mapper listings (simply because iNES has been the powerhouse format since pretty much forever). UNIF would be better when dealing with US games that use typical/common boards/mappers. But there simply is no real UNIF equivilent for some iNES mapper numbers... so when you get to obscure pirate games or even some relatively common Japanese games, iNES is probably going to be easier (UNIF might be downright impossible -- afaik there's less UNIF board names than iNES mapper numbers)

So pretty much... iNES is the standard -- sloppy and unclear as it is... it's what we're stuck with.

I would say it depends on what you're doing and what games you're dealing with.... but generally I'd say just stick with iNES. At least until UNIF can 100% replace it (which will most likely never happen).

EDIT: I should note that aside from board/mapper listings... UNIF is just all around superior in terms of laying out cartridge information. UNIF just does a better job of storing everything and is much more clear and precise. The only issue is the lack of established board names.

Go with iNES. UNIF just isn't as wide-spread as iNES.
