Default Are headers important?

I have headered and unheadered roms, and I see no reason to have headers on roms. Are they really needed by anything?

I'm planning to convert all my roms to the same formats, so I'm trying to figure out the best ones. Any suggestions?

If you're speaking of SNES ROMs, then no, I don't believe they're manditory for any games. However having them headered has been the if-so-facto standard until somewhat recently (when someone tried to go on a crusade to rid the world of SNES headers -- ultimately just causing confusion and compatibility problems)

For NES ROMs -- they're absolutely required.

Don't know about any others.

I would say keep the headers. Reason being -- the existence of a header should be determined by the file-format -- not by what is required for emulators. AFAIK, SNES ROM file formats include a header -- so even if it's not used all the time, it's best to just leave it there.

In addition to what Disch said, most hacks and translations expect a header, because up until not to long ago any ROM you downloaded would have a header. It's hard enough to get people to use IPS patches, now with headerless ROMs in addition to multiple versions of the ROM...

I wouldn't mind headless ROMs if they changed the file extention to .bin or something else that isn't associated with a specific copier's format (.smc is the format the Super Magicom uses)

Yeah, I'd hope they would do that since all of those extensions are taken from certain copiers...except maybe .sfc, but I've only seen that a couple of times.
