I live on the second floor of my apartment building. The stairwell up to my floor is actually part of my apartment. So, if someone were to break-in, the only way for them to proceed is up the stairwell.
My door is pretty loud, so I figure, if I hear it open unexpectedly, I can run to the kitchen, grab as many knives as possible, and then start throwing them down the stairwell. Although, I'm not certain if throwing larger objects (chairs / old computers) wouldn't be a better strategy.

You could always spray paint a pentagram on a dead cat and toss it at 'em.
