Default Best Notepad/Wordpad replacement ?

I sometimes have to do a quick touch to a document at places that don't have Office installed. The thing is that sometimes, Notepad/wordpad isn't powerfull enough, but close. Any of you know good replacements for these two ?

I use EditPad Lite. Apparently the program was updated recently, so I'll give it a shot.

I also use EditPad Lite at work. I have to have a large number of notepad files open and the tabbed interface is damn nice.

I use http://www.flos-freeware.ch/notepad2.htmlNotepad2</A>. Hasn't been updated in a couple of years, but it's a lightweight standalone executable and does everything I could want, including syntax highlighting.

http://www.openoffice.org/OpenOffice.org</a> will certainly do all you require and more, but it's a big download and take up a fair bit of memory when started.
