Default romname change - game crash

Hi, I want to change the romname of a snes rom and when I edit the first two letters, the rom doesn't load anymore. Is this kind of a copyprotection? Is it possible to crack this?

I'll assume you're talking about the game's internal cartridge header? This could mean that the game's been hacked to work in your emulator, with detection based on the name in the cart header. If this is the case, there's not much you can do other than bug the authors of your emulator to get it running properly, without hacks.

Alternatively, there could be a checksum check routine - either for the cart header or for the entire rom - which is probably fairly easy to break, so long as you trace the game's execution in a debugger-enabled emulator.

Thanks for your help. I tried and unfortunately I guess it's the first possibility. When I change the name and run it with snes9x it works fine, but zsnes doesn't.

I try to change the romname in bs zelda and used snes9x 1.41 (1.43 doesn't play this game at all). Both zsnes 1.14w and 1.51w didn't play the game with changed rom name.

Ah, I remember playing the BS Zeldas. If I remember well, there were a game that needed Snes9x to be playable, while the others worked only in Zsnes.

Here's a nice place for info about the BS Zeldas

Yes, this is ancient stone tablets which only works with snes9x.

Anyway, I've encountered another problem. I'd like to expand the rom and used Lunar expand to make it to 1,5 MB.

Unfortunately I can't make a jump to this new addresses. The last address I can jump to is $cfffff. When I trace with Geiger, why I can't get access to the $D0 bank, there'll only occur only "eor" failure messages.
Can anybody help me please?

Yay for double posting

The problem is solved. Lunar detected the rom as LoRom but it was in fact a HIrom...
